I love Patrick Warburton's voice so much that I thought it might be worth watching that live action show he was in with David Spade. Turned out it was less Emperor's New Groove and more worst show ever.

I somehow avoided spoilers and am really glad I did.

Rewatching a certain first season episode right now and hooooooly poo poo for a show that claims that they don’t plan things in advance they‘re either full of poo poo or do a great job with retconning.

The book is amazing, essentially an aural history of the entire show to this point. There wasn’t anything especially shocking or new to me, but learning the origin of a few of the background characters was neat. Really it’s just nice to have all that info in one book.

I actually laughed when they talk about the second season finale and how adamant they are that they didn’t have a plan for Dr. Girlfriend’s “Monarch, I’m…” line, and then on the next page pretty much the first thing Doc says is “Jackson wanted her to be pregnant!”. Glad they didn’t go that direction.

They wanted Rusty to, in their words, “win the lottery” and Jr dying was the most obvious way of doing it. Having Sr. come back and take over Venture Industries would defeat the whole point.

I don’t think we’re gonna see much of Sr. in the present after this episode. It was pretty much them deciding to answer one of the biggest questions fans had, and in a particularity clever, unpredicted way too boot.

As much as they make up stuff as they go along, Jonas is such an important part of the backstory - both to our main cast and the universe at large - that I'd be shocked if they didn't have some inkling of what his fate was - even if they never planned to reveal it - when they started the show, and even more so if they never bounced around some ideas between themselves as the series went along. Like, granted, I'm not saying that I think they had this particular reveal/answer planned out, but I'd be really surprised to learn they never had a working canon explanation for what happened to him in their minds at any point during the prior seasons.

From reading the book I got the impression that they spend a LOT of time shooting the poo poo and coming up with ideas. Some of the ideas make it into the show, most don’t. They don’t set up a season plan, they write an episode each (usually in the middle) based around a couple things they had scribbled down either recently or years ago and work backward from there.

So I agree that they probably did have “Jonas is in the PROBLEM box” sticky note somewhere, but it was probably one of a million ideas. Maybe some of the first season “hints” (Bisbee being under he impression that Jonas had discovered the secret of immortality, Jonas’ statue pointing up at the sky) were put in as intentional hints, maybe they looked at those and saw retcon possibilities, maybe the fandom is seeing foreshadowing when it wasn’t intentional.

For what it’s worth, they almost certainly have “the Monarch, Rusty, Jonas Jr, 2421, and Billy are all failed Jonas clones” written down somewhere too but that’s not gonna happen because it’s probably the most popular theory out there and they state in the book they rewrite plot points if someone guesses them.

Never heard that one before. Why 24 and Billy?

Billy being related/a clone of Rusty or Jonas works with his character, he's been obsessive over Rusty and Jonas his entire life and revealing that he COULD have been Rusty if he hadn't developed Hydrocephalus would totally crush him. 24 would be a clone too because, gently caress it, let's make every redhead between the ages of 25-40 a clone and also he wouldn't give a poo poo about it, unlike the others.

Also it could be argued that all of them represent different parts of Jonas' personality.

Really 24 being a Jonas/Rusty relative is just a joke (that I could see them making, to be honest) but Rusty, Billy, Jr, and the Monarch, when put together, absolutely combine back into an amalgamation of Jonas.

Rusty's got the obsession and mind for super-science but no drive, Jr's got the drive but none of the imagination (he made consumer goods and a slightly better version of Jonas' greatest achievement, and needed Rusty to make even that work), Billy got his intelligence (neither Rusty or Jr are particularly smart, just good at science) and the Monarch has Jonas' eviler aspects (cutthroat and hellbent on getting his way and doesn't care how many corpses he leaves in his wake).

But this is all so on the nose and obvious that even if they were considering it at one point they certainly aren't now, and things like establishing that the cloning machines were Jonas' and placing both the Monarch and Billy's mothers in Jonas' swinging circle are really just red herrings at this point. Probably.

I think the real thing to look for this season (and the big plot reveal, besides Jonas' fate) is what happened to Morpho. Are they still alive and, if so, where/who are they?

I don't think JJ particularly needed Rusty to build the shield. He just wanted to make Rusty feel included.

I dunno, given what happened to make the shield I feel like JJ knew the risks involved and wouldn't have ethically been able to do it himself. But then again Rusty did rush it, so maybe a capable (well, less procrastinating) scientist would have been able to throw together the shield in a way that didn't mutate all the people working on it. Huh.

The failed clone theory still works because Jonas probably didn't realize that Rusty absorbed JJ, so he had a successful (albeit dwarf) clone of himself all along. Probably good he didn't, as he likely would have sacrificed Rusty to get to JJ.

Yeah, you're right, when put right up against an actual red-headed character his hair is a absolutely brown. Dean's hair is pretty much the same color too, but I've never actually thought what Dean's hair color was, just assumed it was red:

But I guess both 21 and Dean are brown-haired. Odd.

[Edit: Looking at those two photos now, though, I've just noticed that Hank, Dean, and 21 all have the more or less the same nose. Not theorycrafting or anything, but I've never noticed that.]

ANYWAY theorycrafting with Venture Bros. is completely pointless because they don't even know what they're gonna do until they do it and if you post your theory online and you're right they'll just change it anyway.

And even making predictions when episodes are in the can is silly because they're way, way, better at this poo poo than anyone else is. Seriously. Jonas was in the loving PROBLEM machine. You can't beat that.

Hot drat that was an episode. Monarch confirmed as Rusty’s half brother, the (mostly) complete explanation of what happened to Jonas, and the return of “SUPER run away!”

What else is left to reveal/explain at this point? They’ve knocked out the big questions, all that really remains now is who the boys mother is.

gotta say, I strongly approve of AS just throwing these episodes up on a Friday night. Hope the lack of views when it premieres on Sunday aren't anything they give a poo poo about.

Cartoon Network has cared a lot more about app numbers than the ratings for awhile now.

As for why Adult Swim has been dumping Venture Bros on Fridays, I think they realized doing Midnight releases is kind of shooting themselves in the foot—sure, some people might stay up to watch it live, but I bet the majority of people DVR it and skip the ads. I’ve been airplaying the app from my phone to my AppleTV to watch all the episodes this season and the ads aren’t skippable (I actually have to keep my phone unlocked and open otherwise the stream stops when the ads come up) so I’ve been seeing the stupid AirHeads ads every week.

The app doesn’t have bumps, though.

I was prepared for a million hot takes about DMTM moonlighting as a concubine for the illuminati and how garbage that is but the tag fixed that.

I caught Manhauers and Brisbee, Reddit points out that the professor from Dia De Los Dangerous! was another sillouette. I didn't recognize any more but it doesn't really matter because they were just Rusty's subconscious projecting a group that controls the world.

Reddit also pointed out that the VR device is either based on the Joy Can or something similar a different super-scientist invented. The OSI has got all the really cool toys, it's really not fair.

Except the teleporters, Monarch has those. And I can't imagine any good will come of that.
