You might want to put something in the OP about how to actually configure Improved Races. I'm new and it took me forever to understand how to actually get to its config screen, I completely reinstalled the plugin manager and all the plugins thinking there was something wrong.

Is there anyway to have autosave at jumpgates? I've finished the first 3 Argon missions, but just keep getting blown up and having to restart a save 3 sectors away.

I bought this game a while back and failed to get into it. Now I'm trying at it again and after seeing that cool space battle in that mission you get that Centaur ship I think I'm really digging this game.

Okay, I've reinstalled Albion Prelude, set up my tv as a monitor, and got a nice chair to become space god in. Now all that remains is to fiddle with the controller options until I am playing Ace Combat: Space Edition.

Fargin Icehole posted:drat man, I thought the centaur that was given to me was the poo poo. Till i got hit by some anti-corvette missile by a Terran Katana(?) on that very mission. For a while you are, but not forever. At a certain point you should set aside the plot missions and start doing your own thing - you can then work on getting space-rich and assembling the most terrifying fleet the universe has seen. Depending on what you're flying, there are certain ship classes you need to be wary of. If you're in a fighter (M5, M4[+], M3[+]), beware of bigger fighters that hit harder than you. Certain seeking missiles can pose a risk, but you can usually avoid them by flying erratically and changing direction a lot until they run out of range (works for me at least). Corvettes and capital ships often have anti-fighter weaponry that can swat you instantly, but you're fast enough that you can always avoid such fights. It's possible to take out bigger ships with a good heavy fighter, but it takes practice. In a corvette, (M6[+]) you have to beware of frigates and capital ships, heavy fighters in large numbers, and unfair anti-corvette missiles. Having a few of your own fighters tagging along as wingmen can help with some of these. You can also set some of your wingmen and fighters to 'missile defence', which will cause them to try to intercept missiles attacking your ship. You won't be flying capital ships for a while (and even then you'll probably choose not to sit in the cockpit yourself), but those need to beware of other capital ships and swarms of fighters. Every ship in the game needs to beware of missile frigates (M7M) and bombers (M8) that manage to get within range.

Two things that help against missiles in the core game are: 1) The Missile Defense Mosquito script (Part of the bonus package, therefore can be used in an unmodified game) 2) Custom turret scripts that are set to engage missiles first. If you're running mods, then MARS can handle this.

I normally just buy tens of thousands of salvage insurance once I start my first factory and am making fat stacks. I never have to worry about it again. I probably should just get a cheat for it the fact that you have to pay for it nice from an RP, and prevents save "abuse" but its "kinda expensive just to save" early on and hilariously cheap later.

The cheat script (which everybody should have installed anyway, for messing around or fixing stuff), has an option for unlimited salvage insurance.

Try doing patrol missions too in areas near Xenon sectors. They'll usually throw a bunch of Ls at you (along with a mess of other ships, usually Ns and Ms). It's incredibly inconsistent too. I had one game where I was tooling around in a Griffon and it seemed like every time I engaged a Xenon swarm I'd be able to claim at least one of their ships at the end, but in other games I'd go through dozens without getting a single capture. And Xenon ships don't have that "I'm surrendering" speech delay that tends to cause normal ships to die to my turrets.

Thanks for the advice; I ended up nabbing one on an incursion mission in Scale Plate Green in the centaur I was given. Blew out an L's shields with a concussion volley, almost ended up pulling the trigger again to soften it up for the turrets when I noticed that it had gone blue. Lost a Nova raider that I had brought along for backup, though -- it was starting to hurt from a bunch of Ns and Ms, and I ordered it to jump out, not realizing that it wouldn't continue evasive maneuvers while its jump drive was charging up. After how many tries it's been, I decided not to reload the save. Besides, it had been fitted with no weapons other than 4 phased repeater guns, and those can suck a dick.

Will AP only provide me with sidemissions I qualify for, or can I accidentally accept a mission I'm lacking resources for? On another note, "Follow this dude closely but not too close!" missions are the worst. I already did a handful of those in Grand Theft Auto IV, why must this game offer them too? I just want to shoot things.

X3AP will give you collect-and-return missions on 5-minute timers when the fastest ship you have is a Dolphin hauler. X3AP will give you scan-the-asteroid missions when you don't have a mineral scanner. X3AP will give you taxi missions when you don't have a passenger ship. X3AP will give you covert ops missions to follow ships that move too quickly for you to possibly follow. X3AP will give you covert ops missions to follow a ship that moves at 40 m/s for eight sectors, bumps into a passing freighter and loses 80% of its HP, then takes a 12-sector detour to repair. X3AP will give you escort-the-hauler missions that lead you into Xenon Sector #FUCKYOU where you get instapopped by a J that was camped on the gate with its dick hanging out. You have to pick and choose missions to make sure the ones you accept won't screw you over.

Regarding Xenon L. NPC Bailing Addon. I linked before. allows you to actually tweak poo poo, when used with scs, it allows you to get all but 2 races (xenon & cock) relations up quickly, (by sending the astronauts/pilots to friendly stations and by returning ships to their races) gives you more control over bail rates.

Oh neat, I've never used that either but I suppose if for whatever reason it doesn't work, or anyone finds it lacking, the Buy/Sell Locator is really awesome and works perfectly. Also going back to L chat, I find a good way to spot an empty one is to fly to warzone sectors (Argon ones work well) and just look around, I often find empty ones after what I assume was a large battle. Especially good if you're a low level or don't have any assets to fight one yourself.

Never do missions in Terran sectors, they all suck. Personally I think the best missions for profit/relations/ease are the assassination ones. Finish the Terran plot and get yourself a Vidar, or splurge on a Spring-blossom and then jump into the sector and make a beeline for the target, once you destroy it most of the other larger enemies will jump away. Once you've got some cash, buy a large transporter and do station building missions, coupled with Best Buy locator it's one of the easiest way to make money in the late game, since once you get your Fight rank up assassination missions get harder, and the targets become Carracks which are tougher to kill. edit: vv I remember some of those missions would let you use any ship with lifesupport, but others would force you to use a transport class ship, and who flies those things around? I just like assassination missions because you get to kill stuff instead of auto-piloting around like a busta, I guess Someguy fucked around with this message at 23:56 on Jun 4, 2013 |

It's why I don't suggest starting as Terran in the OP. All the missions are the same elsewhere, only the gates are sane distances from each other and you can jump to them all with your jumpdrive. Also only doing defense, patrol, kill or transport missions. The ONLY thing terran has going for it is Aldrin rep which you need to buy the Springblossom and Spitfyre.

What am I doing wrong here? You need to change your pilots name to Thereshallbewings (your name won't actually change if done right) and then save, then reload that save, it will lag for a second and you might get a pop-up message when it's loaded correctly, in the case of Codea I know that it will actually tell you if it didn't install correctly. If you already knew this then, I don't know what to tell you.

Several of them or all of them? Are you sure you put them in the right place / used the manager program? You shouldn't need to change your pilot's name; scripts come with a file that marks your game as modified. Mars is special though, it has delayed installation. You need to save and reload your game once for it to show up.
