Her throat was dry---too dry. As she struggles to breathe, she glares at a number of figures around her, trying to discern if her eyes are lying to her for the fourth time today. Her hands were shaky from the waste, and when she tries to pull her pistol, her arm refuses to exert the effort required to clear the holster.

And then he was there, offering her a bottle of water, and something was echoing in her mind---words. Speech! The heat made her brain mushy, but she stumbles closer, falling to a knee as she grips the precious, precious water. Her fingers barely work the cap, but she gets a mouthful and doubles over, coughing into the dirt as her lips start to crack and bleed.

"Th-th-thank you." It's all she can manage before greedily downing the entire bottle, leaving the empty plastic on the ground. Then she looks up, seeing another man loom, and her wits rush back in an instant. She struggles backwards, to her feet, hooking her thumb around her pistol as she tries to get all of these strange men in view. Her eyes move from desperate to dangerous, and she seems all too jumpy.

"You! Who are you? What do you want with me? I won't be a slave."

As she watches the scene unfold, she visibly calms. Her hand never leaves her gun, though. When the ghoul speaks again, though, her eyes tear a little. She tries to speak, but the sound is hoarse.

"They t-t-took me---the s-slavers. But I... I g-g-got away." She blinks the tears away, taking a moment to collect herself. "I n-n-need h-help. It's hot, and I n-need f-f-food."

She looks at each of the men helplessly; in her state, she'd have to kill them to stop them, and taking lives that didn't deserve it seemed wrong, even in her delirium. "And m-m-maybe we d-don't have to k-kill each other for it. D-do y'all have n-n-names?"

Her face now clean from the damp rag, Jackie was relaxing against one of the old, cool concrete columns as the sun sinks through the sky. That man, Lloyd, who she had at first mistaken for the caravan guardian, had even given her a small supply of rations (which she had paid Mossman back out of). Getting him to accept it was no easy task: it wasn't until she insisted it as repayment for saving her life that he took the water. She hadn't eaten while they did; the man who seemed to know his way around a medical bag had suggested she sip water slowly until her mouth wasn't dry, but that food could make her vomit and undo all of that hard work. So she had worked down another of her bottles of water over the last few hours.

She sighed, trying not to think about the number of times she had escaped death the last few days while watching Mossman clean his weapon and . Of all the bad happening to her lately, finding a well-kept pistol on the slaver's caravan seemed a blessing. She had some dangerous work to do if she was going to seek out vengeance, and the task made her pensive. When Mossman spoke of a next move, she thought of traveling the waste alone again and decided to speak up. "I've got me some family out Jhonnyville way, ain't seen 'em in a spell. An' I have some, ah, business to see ta in New Nashville, so it'd suit me jus' fine."

Jackie Reed is sleeping, but the gunfire jolts her awake. Disoriented for a moment, she holds her breathe before her brain kicks in an explains the situation. She hooks a thumb around her pistol's grip, moving to crouch next to the man named Lloyd, gazing into the dark and trying to be invisible.

"Do you see them?"

When the wall collapsed, Jackie almost lets out a yell but caught it at the last minute, cursing under her breath instead. "poo poo, poo poo, poo poo!"

Her eyes move apologetically to Lloyd's as he explains the situation, and squares her jaw when he mentions the guns. This might be her fault, but she sure wasn't going to let these men die for it. So when Mossman asks Rourke for a distraction, she answered in a hiss. "I'll do tha distraction. My fault, anyway, wasn't it??"

Jackie checks her pistol, working the slide to chamber a round. With a deep breath, she starts to move to get the strangers' attention when---wait, what is Sahen doing out there with an axe? She pauses, peeking out at the scene, gun in hand, and whispers to Mossman, "Well, it looks someone beat me to it."

A chill ran down Jackie's spine as she listened to the conversation. What kind of pet? And when she saw that looming creature come free of its robes, her heart skipped. That man sounded nervous, and she was certain he'd start shooting at Sahen when his brain caught up to his eyes. So she did what she knew how to do.

Jackie Reed rounded the truck with her gun level, opening fire on the men.

I believe that, since I acted first, I get to spend all 10 AP before Sequence is determined? I spend 2 AP a shot, taking 5 total. I use 10MM FMJ, so 1d8 damage.

Starting things off right: 83, 2, 39, 4, 20

Can I spend as many as it takes for tommy-gun man, then switch, or do I have to specify all five targets to start? If I have to specify, the first three on Tommy Gun Guy, the last two on Shotgun guy.

Edit: Read some of the rules, so rolling 1d100 for critical hits.

Attack 1 Damage (83 < 85): 5+6 = 11
Attack 2 Crit (02 < 85): 179 -- 175-179 Damage x 10, ignore armor protection,
make an EN check to avoid unconsciousness

Attack 2 Damage (02 < 85) 1 x 10 = 10+6 = 16 (or 70 if I add my pistol's damage before multiplying), Ignore AP, EN vs Unconsciousness
Attack 3 Damage (39 < 85): 4+6 = 10
Attack 4 Crit (04 < 85): 52 -- Damage x 1.5, make EN check to avoid Stun
Attack 4 Damage (04 < 85): 1 x 1.5 = 1.5+6 = 7.5 (or 10.5 if I add my pistol's damage before multiplying), EN vs Stun
Attack 5 Damage (20 < 85): 1+6 = 7

...and Miss Jackie Reed kept firing into the men, emptying most of her magazine quick as a hare.

Again, I will attack the guy closest with the tommy gun until he goes down, then the guy with the shotgun until he goes down, then the third guy. If I have to specify, first two on Tommy Gun, last three on Shotgun. I use 10MM FMJ, so 1d8 damage.

Sequence: 14 / Action Points: 10

Attack One
Attack (2 AP/85%): 26
Damage (1d8): 8+6 = 14

Attack Two
Attack (2 AP/85%): 41
Damage (1d8): 2+6 = 8

Attack Three
Attack (2 AP/85%): 37
Damage (1d8): 7+6 = 13

Attack Four
Attack (2 AP/85%): 22
Damage (1d8): 2+6 = 8

Attack Five
Attack (2 AP/85%): 39
Damage (1d8): 2+6 = 8

The bullet hurt---a lot. It was clean through Jackie's shoulder, though, and she was still on her feet for the moment.

She almost spent her last two rounds on the deathclaw before Sahen interceded, and stood mostly shocked as he proceeded to relieve the man of his posessions. When he cuts the man lose, however, Jackie moves after him, one eye never leaving the deathclaw. She takes a bead on the stripped man.

"Wait! Why!? Why did you kill these people!?"

Jackie waited several more moments, trying to decide if she should shoot the man or not. Probably not worth the bullets, she concluded. With no clothing or aid, it was unlikely the waste would let him live long anyway. So she relaxed, bringing her gun down. And then, all at once, the adrenaline and endorphins stopped getting the job done.

She let out a yelp of pain, dropping her gun in the dirt as she fell against the truck, clutching at the sucking bullet hole in her arm. "AH, gently caress! S-S-Sahen... help?"

Jackie sunk to her knees, leaning against the truck's wheel as she clutched harder at the bullet wound, hoping the pressure would help with the immense pain shooting up her bicep and through her shoulder.

The ride had been bumpy, and laying in the truck's bed hadn't made it any easier. She set off south toward the old farm, maybe a mile down the road. It'd be a 20-minute walk, but she could use the time to collect herself; there'd be a lot of emotions in the air in not too long. And maybe they'd had enough food and water to give her a lunch...

Johnnyville seemed exactly like Jackie remembered it. Even with the new buildings, new immigrants, and new farms, it felt like old Johnnyville. And, even after six years, it felt like home. Even the porch was new---the old wood probably rotted by now---but her knock on the door echoed through the house just like she remembered. And the bear hug felt just like she remembered, too.

----------------

The sight of her mother broke Jackie's heart. She teared up, finally breaking down as the last straw came to rest on her back. Her father left them alone---small miracles, right? It took her several moments of pure sobbing on the couch to get the emotion out, even as her father beckons her from the kitchen. She took her mother in her arms, tears soaking her shawl. "I'm so sorry, Ma. So sorry I couldn't be here--give ya whatcha needed. I'm so, so, so sorry, mom..."

----------------

The tears still running, she appeared in the kitchen, sipping on the water and trying to collect herself as she listens. Finally, she looks her father in the eye and asks, "D'ya have somethin' stronger? This is a lot to take in an' I could use somethin' to soothe the pain of it all... "

After her second shot of whiskey, sipping on her third, she started in on the fresh Brahmin meat and well-cooked sides. It had taken her the better part of half an hour to stop crying, and even now she was only holding back the flood of emotion by keeping her mouth full in between sentences.

"Is there anythin' we can do for her? We're headin' to New Nashville, but if she won't make tha trip... Maybe we can get Susan the gear she needs? Is Ma... stable? Do they know what caused it?"

Jackie continued, "And what is Chris doing with those Unity hooligans? Surely she'd do better here, on the farm, than out in the world with a gun in her hand... Should I go see her? How is she doin'?"

Jackie hungrily ate down the fresh, warm food. It'd been weeks, and it wasn't like she ate well in New Nashville.

"I've been through... well, men try to take advantage of a pretty woman in a place like New Nashville. I had work as an enforcer, but someone seemed to think that was code for 'prostitute', and next thing I knew I was... I was... Well, I was in a bad way, traveling the waste alone with no food. But I'm better now, and I met some people that seem trustworthy enough by the end of it, so it isn't of too much concern."

Jackie was careful to conceal her proficiency with firearms---and the number of people she's had to kill in the waste. Her father once shot a man brahmin-rustling, so maybe he'd understand, but it didn't seem like it was worth getting into if it could be avoided.

I'm getting in on this soundtrack thing: Ain't No Grave

Jackie had hoped she could get out of the conversation, but as the afternoon wore on it became apparent that she wouldn't be leaving Johnnyville without having it. As she accepted the glass of water, she took a large gulp of the radiation-free liquid and steeled her resolve.

"Well, ya come by some skills, ya know? Killin' a man ain't easy, Pa, but sometime's it's them or me and there's only one real way to go with that choice..."

She got quiet for a while, looking at the table, thinking of the time she had shot a man in a New Nashville alley when he tried to rape her. And how the police had let her off the hook, even though the one groped her while his partner wasn't looking, and how he had died all quiet-like in a bed with a knife in his belly. Her third victim had tried to rob the Antioch Casino---he had killed two patrons and a security guard before Jackie rounded the corner and put three slugs in his chest.

And the fourth was that slaver, the one who stuck his tongue in her ear and told her how much she'd go for in his little brothel in Bedford. He died easy from a bullet to the throat as he slept. Tears started to fill her eyes as she thought of the horrors she had seen in VaultTown, and the old feelings of hopelessness rose back up.

"The world's made me cold, Pa. I've... I've killed for safety, for freedom, for... Pa, I don't wanna recount the horrors I've faced in the waste. It's no conversation fit for a man an' his girl. And that Iron ya lent me---it's in New Nashville. I stashed it in a locker at the coach station there. Key's on my necklace."

Jackie pulled the twine braid out of her shirt. On it rested a small, unassuming key for a locker, numbered 13, and a small, brass locket that held pictures of her family. The slaver had taken them from her when he purchased her, but she had been careful to reclaim them before fleeing.

"I don't know 'bout makin' a difference. Most days, makin' a livin's hard enough. I've saved a life or three, but it ain't like I'm actually helpin' people."

She blinked her tears away, taking a gulp of water and suddenly smiling up at him.

"And you know drat well I ain't takin' more of your food. That's why I left in the first place. You still smoke, 'ough? I'd take one. Now what time'll Chrissy be around? I have a dinner appointment with my friends."

Edit: Retcon history because Jackie has probably killed way more than four people given her firearm skills.

The voice carried through the house, and while it sounded older, Jackie could've picked it out anywhere. She moved faster than she thought she could've, given her exhaustion, but suddenly she was hugging her sister tight right in the doorway.

"Chrissy! How are you?"

Jackie hugs her tight, smiling at her sister and giving her a small peck on the cheek. "Come sit down. Pa and I were talkin' in the kitchen. Tell me what's up with you. It's been so long!"

They moved to the kitchen where her father had poured up another glass of water. After small pleasantries, Jackie managing to explain her bullet wound as a driving incident, and just enough teasing about both of them being so grimy, Jackie got to the question that was sitting heavy in her mind.

"Pa said you were workin' for Unity? What's that like?"

What is she wearing? What does it look like she's been doing for Unity? Is she carrying a gun? Not sure if Perception is appropriate, but couldn't find a skill that seems to fit.

"Friends? You don't say. I rolled in with some people from the waste. I reckon we'll be rollin' back out soon, 'ough. And... Well, Lorraine can rest easy, sis. Those killers got theirs."

Chris looked healthy, really. It was nice to see she'd found her way and stayed close to home. Her parents needed the help, and the group sounded nice, if idealistic. Jackie burned away the afternoon catching up with her family and asking her sister about the finer points of Unity.

"How does Unity afford all of that? How do you set up clinics and rehabilitate the needy? The supplies to set up shelter can't be cheap."

"Is there a centralized leader?"

"How do the caravans stay safe?"

"Do they pay you?"

By the end of their time together, Jackie felt at home, which was a strange for her---she had spent so long feeling homesick that the sudden lack of it threw her off. It all seemed so surreal, to be here with her grown sister and her aging parents. So when dinner came up, Jackie decide to miss her dinner date. She had been gone too long and her traveling mates could wait for a moment.

"Pa, I guess I'll be stayin' for dinner. You better be givin' me somethin' small ta eat, 'ough. An' I'll probably be on my way soon after, at least for the evenin'."

She's Leaving Home

Jackie excused herself after dinner---she had agreed to meet the others at the hotel and she was already running late. She kissed her mother and father good-bye, giving each a tight hug. It was unlikely that she'd be back to see them before she left, and she tried to convey her love in those few words and comfortable gestures. "I'll take care of your iron, Pa. And make sure you take care of Ma for me..."

Chris followed her out down the lane, to the gate in the fence. They hugged tight, and Jackie looked at her sister once more. She was just so much older! They exchanged smiles, tear-glittering eyes staring back at her own.

As Chris turned to walk away, Jackie found her voice, "Chris, would you like to come along? Meet the people I'm traveling with? We'll probably just have a few drinks, maybe a game of cards..."

Jackie hoped the real question came across: won't you come with me, traveling by my side?

6:30 PM

Jackie arrived to dinner with her sister in tow, appearing as Lloyd and Mossman were discussing the business with the guns. "Howdy, y'all. Hope I'm not interruptin' nothin'. This is my sister, Chris."

The smell of fresh tobacco filled Jackie's nose and she leaned in toward Lloyd, smiling. She planted a large kiss on his cheek, taking his cigarette out of his mouth and pulling a deep drag off of it as she did. "Thank ya, Lloyd. Ya know I like 'em fresh-rolled."

She sat down at the table, beckoning her sister to join them as she tapped some ash off the cigarette and took another drag. "Chris, these are some of my associates: the ghoul is called Mossman and this is the ever-dashing Lloyd... Rook?"

Chris pulled out a chair, joining them at the small table. "Anyone have some cards? I promised Chris here a few drinks and a few hands of poker, but all I got on me is bullets, 'ough, and I ain't sure Mr. Dawkins'll take 'em for currency."

After a third, comfortable drag, she stretched in the chair and offered Lloyd his cigarette back. "So what'd y'all do today? You likin' Johnnyville?"

If the drinking or cards die down early with the party, Jackie might ask to meet some of Chris's friends and see what they're up to. If she doesn't end up horribly hung over, she'd help with the crop in the morning. If she does, hangovers and farm work don't seem like they'll mix well. If they drink with the party, they'll probably both pass out at the hotel, and if they go see Chris's friends I imagine they'd head to Jackie's house to sleep it off.

"Sure, I'll tag along. Not sure how long I'll be around, but maybe helpin' put some people in homes'll make me feel better. Chrissy, how is it your head don't feel like a splittin' watermelon? Mine sure does."

Jackie sighed, squeezing her eyes and hoping her hangover would go way. "An' I guess I could see Montez again---didn't he have a crush on you, one point? "

It was hard to keep the stew down, and it has nothing to do with the flavor. Jackie almost puked across the kitchen table twice during the meal before giving up, pushing the half-empty bowl away. "Thanks, Pa, but whatever clear liquid Chrissy kept givin' me last night's decided I won't be eatin' this mornin'."

After breakfast (and washing dishes), Jackie gave her parents a second goodbye, though this one was less heart-felt; her parents seemed to be less than concerned, no matter the choice she was going to make with her life.

The two daughters headed to the Unity tent, trying to fill in the evening's gaps for each other. "Ya don't remember givin' that Caravan guy yer bra? Ya'd lost 40 caps that hand, and you offered it ta him instead of tha money, Chrissy."

Jackie looked over Montez, who she hadn't seen in too long. She smirked---he looked as bad as she felt. Motioning to her sister, she said, "You ever want to just strangle her, lookin' to pepppy? Let's just get this over with."

---

The foundation went down easy: 2

The cement laid nice, and Jackie smoothed it with almost-forgotten skill. When she was 12, she helped her dad build their third bedroom, and as she got to work on the shack, draggin' herself through the hang-over, all those memories came running back.

"Watch close, Jackie, this is how you lay the foundation. You pour it smooth as possible the first time---ain't no redos, unless we gonna rip it all up an' try again, and we ain't got the money for that. We take our time with it... Grab that knife, go slow. Bring it over, but keep the pressure light. It's like spreadin' butter: too much force and you're just gonna make a mess."

---

And the walls went up fine: 3

As cement dried fast---it'd take a while to harden all the way through, but it was already good enough to get to work on the walls. Jackie drove nails into the ony slightly-bent lumber, trying to straighten it out between sips of almost-fresh water from the Unity supply.

"It doesn't matter if the wood's the best---dont' even have to be pretty, my girl. But it's gotta be mostly straight and it's gotta be sturdy. We can't have the roof comin' down in the night on your little sister."

The aluminum was new---they had used drywall and brick on their house, but it went of even easier. Driving nails through it was hard, but she got the hang of it after the third panel.

---

By the end, the hangover had evaporated: 1

And by the end of the work, Jackie sat back and sighed, marvelling at what they had gotten done in a morning. "Nice to be doin' some good back home, Chrissy. Thanks for havin' me along. All that hard work seemed to have helped with the booze, too."

She had managed to work her way through the hangover, and she finished her glass of water as she stretched. "What next? We puttin' up another one? It's just 'bout lunch time, ain't it?"

Jackie took a bite of her lunch, coughing slightly as her sister insinuated she had become unforgiving. Maybe she was right, though. Chrissy had always been able to read her, so if she said it, it was probably true.

"Chris, I've done a lot of things---a lot of things I regret, now. Killin' ain't pretty, my dear sister, but some things need to get set straight back in New Nashville. After that, I don't know."

"It ain't like I can come back here to live. What'ould I do? Build shacks, work the land? Ma and Pa'll take care of themselves---always have. 'Sides, the caps I was sendin' home were worth far more than what I could scrape up 'round here."

"The people I'm travelin' with are nice enough, but a bit weird. And that Lloyd's easy enough on the eyes. Seem handy with medicine and machinery, but they need protectin', so they keep me around, I guess. Don't know any of 'em incredibly well, though---their lives, their families, their reasons for bein' in the waste."

Jackie finished her water, bumming a cigarette off of Montez and smoking almost half of it before she spoke again, "There's more to life than that pitiful patch of dirt, Chris. A lot more. Come with me---we can explore it together. Have drinks in fancy bars, sleep in expensive hotels, make enough money to really take care of Ma. Even for just a few months. The road wouldn't seem so cold and lonely knowin' there was someone I could really trust."

Jackie's face exploded with joy, and she gave her sister a tight hug. Jackie's eyes were watering with joy. "Oh, Chrissy, I'm so excited. We should go to the market place, get you a bag to carry your things in. I don't have any money, but maybe we could trade some of my bullets for one."

The sun was just after noon as Jackie pulled her sister to her feet, and they set off toward the center of town together. She spots Lloyd in the market, looking cleaned up and keeping company with Mossman. She looked them over, unaware of the arrangement they had made and uncertain why Mossman looked as if he had done manual labor all morning. Jackie reflexively brushed her own shirt off, trying to get the dirt and sweat from shack-building off it. "Heya, fellas. Have a dirty mornin'?"

"Listen, sorry about the drinkin' last night. I can get a little out of hand, and I hope I ain't done nothin' to offend either of y'all."

She needed to make sure it was okay Chris came with them, but she wasn't sure how to bring it up.

(Sorry for not being around; moving has been eating every spare moment I've had the last week. Seems like my absence itself may be punishment enough, though. Everyone else is rakin' in that XP.)

Jackie accepts the cigarette with a smile, passing the other to her sister. "Thank ya kindly, sir. This the money from the gun? Feels heavy."

She thought again about bringing up her plan to bring Chris along, and almost had the sentence together in her head. But before Jackie could get the words out of her mouth, Chris cut in. "Jackie here asked me along, and I said yes, assuming it ain't too imposin'."

Oh, Chris, she always knew how to take an awkward moment and get through the most painful of it. Jackie smiled, the cigarette in her mouth. "Yes, well, that's about the long an' skinny of it. What do you two think? Got a light, Lloyd?"

-----

They were in Lackis' general store, looking over the goods that ranged from mildly used to worn out. "So what've you been doin' lately for UNITY, Chris? Aside from building houses and whatnot, anything you're particularly good at? Wanna spend this all on whiskey, or should we spend it on supplies to make medicine?"

They looked over the racks of goods, wandering the store undisturbed for a moment or two until they rounded a corner and saw Lackis straightening a shelf. "Oh, hello, Mister Lackis. Havin' a good day? I'd've expected you'd be havin' your kids at this by now."

"I was wonderin' if you have one of them dusters like you used to sell? I lost my old coat on the road and I'd certainly like a new one. And maybe a bottle of liquor, if ya got it to sell."

Jackie would try to get Chris a gun, but 167 caps really isn't much for one. Maybe an old, battered derringer or zipgun she can keep concealed and never regularly fire? Also some kind of cheap armor, even if she protests. Does she already have a backpack and whatnot from her time with UNITY, or will we have to get that, too?

Jackie picks an old, tan duster out of the pile and pulls it on. She tries to ignore the blood on the right arm, and the two bullet holes put through the stain. "What'd'ya think, Chris? Does it suit me?"

She tries to pull off the meanest gunslinger look she can, and Chris doesn't giggle at her---must mean it looks okay. Jackie feels meaner in it, too. And her gun's somehow easier to reach, even through the fabric. And for half-off, it seemed just too good to pass up. She opened the bag Lloyd had passed her in the market place, and started to count out the caps. "I think this'll do for me, Mister Lackis. Ain't got much money for much else. Not 'less you got a way I can make you the money with a gun..."

Caps - 125 => 15

"So, what are we gonna tell Ma and Pa? Do you think that Ma'll do okay without you here?"

As they walked past the sherrif's office, Jackie looked for wanted posters. If she could leave her parents with some money, maybe she wouldn't feel so guilty about wandering off with their other daughter.

-----

They walked around town, looking at cheap jewelry and pointing out cute boys to each other. Chris seemed pretty well-equipped for traveling on their truck, and wouldn't you know it, eager, too. "Maybe we can talk to some of the locals, set up somethin' to get her medicine before we go. Let's go see the local doctor."

They headed on over to Dr. Susan's.

Jackie motioned toward Sahen, but he seemed preoccupied. She shrugged it off, smiling at Chris. "That's another of our travelers, Seems busy, 'ough."

The door was locked, and from the music Jackie guessed that perhaps a surgery was underway. "Huh, looks unavailable. Shall we see about this thief, then? Let's go see Mercer's."

----

The shop was familiar, and the sign outside looked like it hadn't been painted since she left. The smell was unmistakable, though: the smell of old metal and fresh oil hit you as you opened the front door, and it took her back to all of the times she had stood here, knee-high to a grass hopper, next to her father. She walked into the store, looking for the employees.

"Hey, Bill, you here? Came to ask about them break-in."

Jackie grimaced at the man's grotesque ear, and wondered if he would see a doctor before it killed him. "Listen, Bill, I reckon someone's gotta put the thief down, and I certainly got enough bullets for it. I ain't no kid no more, and I am to make some caps off bringin' down the man what shot you. Any idea where he's layin' low, north a' town? I don't know the terrain as well as I did a few years ago. Any a' the ol' caves up there uninhabited?"

----

Chris and Jackie entered the small saloon in town. Well, saloon might not be the right word, but it's where you could get a drink and it's where most of the caravans coming through would stop in. Chris had suggested that someone might've seen a camp fire, coming in from north of town, and Jackie reckoned she was onto somethin'. They sat down with some travelers playing a hand of cards.

"How much to buy in, fellas?"

Gamblin' (40): 67

"Damnit, I was sure I had that last hand. Ya got me on the river, though. Say, any of you fellas seen any signs of life on the road north? Maybe a campfire, someone livin' out that way?"

How many caps do I lose? Should I roll Charisma or Speech to try to get the information? Also, did the bounty specify alive or dead?

Jackie rose from the table, finishing the small glass of water the trading post had given her. "Thanks for the drink, Paul. It's been nice losin' money to you fellas, but I need to see a man about a horse."

Jackie and Chris set off through the streets, walking north on foot. The water facilities plant was well-known locally: it was the kind of place that kids threw rocks at, and dared each other to go inside. When she was younger, there were stories of tribal mutants and death claws living in it, but she reckoned it didn't contain much but fetid water and an older man trying to make an illegal buck. As they approached, she motioned to Chris and they tried to approach silently.

Sneaking (55): 40

They snuck up closer to the plant, keeping the noise low, and Jackie tried to spot the man inside.

Perception (7): 8

Unfortunately, she couldn't see a thing. (Unless Chris helps her?)

"Look, sir, I don't take too kindly to people threatening my sister. What's the real problem here? Why you leavin' out here, stealin' to get by?"

Jackie was talking, but she wasn't trying to talk this out any more---she was trying to get him busy rambling again. This man had threatened to shoot Chris in this dark, dirty building, and to Jackie that was as good as taking the shot. She motioned for Chris to get behind an old concrete pillar, out of sight, and then Jackie moved. She slipped through the shadows of the old facility, getting the man into her view.

Sneaking (55): 49 (Hopefully the shadows are helpin' me out here.)

Jackie stood, reloading and holstering her weapon before revealing herself as best she could. "I'm fine. He's... dead, probably. We need to get his body back to town for the bounty, I guess. C'mon over here."

Jackie started to gather up the man's filthy things, tossing the gun and caps in her own bag and taking up his knapsack. It was heavy, and felt maybe like it was full of stolen parts from the hardware store. She gave the entire facility one more look. Chris seemed shaken when she made her way over, and Jackie gave her a small smile to try to calm her. "Sorry, Chrissy, but ain't nobody threatens to put a bullet in your pretty little head while I'm around. Now grab his legs, and hopefully he won't be too heavy."

Do I need to make a check to drag the body back? Can we skip back to the Sheriff's office?

Alice in Wonderland (Alternate)

The surprise of ol' Bill and Harold gave Jackie a small smile. She had met many men before who had misjudged her, but few who did after they saw what she was capable of. She could sense her reputation growing, and it might just dissuade the next would-be robber. She offered the bag of tools back to Bill. "This is all I found; hopefully it'll help account for some of the lost stock. Glad I could help with your little thief problem, gentlemen."

-----

Jackie happily accepted her bounty, then grimaced as she caught Chris's face. "There's no shame in bein' unaccustomed to killin', Chrissy. But I can't just leave Pa to care for Ma without a cap in his pocket, and this is the fastest thing I'm good at. Let's go tell them bye. I bet my friend'll want to head out this evenin'."

They strolled along the country lane as Jackie counted out 200 caps for their own traveling. The rest would go to her parents, if she could talk them into accepting it. They walked up, and Chris opened the door just as Jackie went to knock---clearly, she had been away too long. "Ma, pa? We have some news to tell you. And about 400 caps to make it easier to take."

Her mother was bundled up in their ancient recliner. It was hard to see her mother like that, and Jackie didn't know how to deal with it. She loved the woman, but so much of the light was simply gone from her face, and it made her wonder how much light her own face had lost in the soul-hardening waste.

Her dad was working on something for dinner, it looked like, and Jackie put the sack of caps on the kitchen table. "Chris is goin' with me, Pa. We're gonna go see the world together, get some freedom and smell some new air. This should be enough to keep Ma's medicine covered, 'ough, and to keep food on the table until we can send some more."

We can play this out, but I wanted to make a "leaving" scene, too, since it seems like the party is more or less waiting on me to move on.

-----

Jackie and Chris arrived at the bar after a late lunch with their parents. Chris's things were already collected from Unity, and Jackie was glad to see that most of the group was just hanging about, relaxing. She moved to sit with them, smiling and ordering a drink of whiskey. "How are y'all fellas? Lookin' ready to travel soon? Onward, to New Nashville? Chris and my own business is more or less cleared up here. Oh, Mossman, what happened to you?"

Can I retroactively buy some bullets while I was dealing with turning the body in? 10mm FMJ is 15 caps / 20 rounds, so I'll buy 40, leaving me 185 caps. Also a bottle of whiskey, but I couldn't find a price for what.

Jackie accepted the keys. "Ain't driven since my Pa had a tractor, but I remember how to steer well enough. Sahen, you wanna do your readin' in the truck? We can get out of here tonight."

When they were all bundled up, with their frightening, large friend in tow, she pulled the truck out onto the road. She spent a good bit of the drive digging around on the half-working radio, finding mostly static until she gave up. Maybe it'd work closer to New Nashville---that city had at least two stations she could remember. "So, Sahen, got plans for New Nashville?"
