So, I just bought the gf a Lenovo IdeaPad U510 from newegg and the screen flickers a bit at certain open positions. Is this a serious problem you think? Should we go ahead and return it? It's not a big deal now, but we are a bit concerned that it might become a bigger problem later on.

YES YES YES.

A few years ago I had an HP laptop that started doing this. At first it was one quick flicker every week or so if I would move the screen to a certain spot, a year later it was constant flicking that made the screen completely unusable, luckily since I was barely ever using it as a laptop I just connected it to a monitor and keyboard and basically used it as a desktop, but definitely get it taken care of now.

Yeah. Thanks for the advice. Going to look into sending it back to newegg. It's not so much a "flicker" really... it's hard to describe. When the screen is in the wrong position the colors get all weird.

This:

Looks like this when the screen is opened to the wrong angle...

Did you take that through a pair of polarized sunglasses?

Nexus 7 actually. But that's how it looks to my human eyes. Not all the time. Just when it is in a position it doesn't like...

This just looks like it's begging for an opportunity to wear out/break. How is the screen connected to the mobo? through those swivel joints? How does that work?

It's generally easier and cheaper not to let you, so it's pretty common. At this point I think it's pretty much just high end stuff that you can customize.

Are the amazon laptop warranties any good?

They probably just cover the first time you drop it, even in a 3 year plan I'm guessing.

who seriously fully encrypts their laptop? If my laptop gets stolen (most likely because I left it someplace by accident) then some punk kid is going to find it, not crash overide or some poo poo. They won't make it past the BIOS password. They won't even try. I get encrypting a few sensitive files... but beyond that seems like overkill.

Change my passwords, put a stop on my cc, and that's pretty much all the bases covered. Boo-hoo, if they get into my laptop they'll know what kind of porn I like.

So, I get that it's cheaper to buy a machine with a hdd and add a ssd yourself, or so I've heard.. but are there any particular brands that are relatively easy to do that? Every laptop I've ever owned was a pain in the rear end to open, having to take a dozen parts off to get to the drives and ram...

Well, maybe they don't sell phillips head screwdrivers where he lives, or maybe he was born without thumbs? Have you thought of that you monster? It would take him at least 15 minutes if he had to use his toes to open up a Thinkpad.

I have to remove my keyboard and 2 ribbon cables to LOOK at my hdd.
