Here's a WIP of another gear painting, overall I'm really happy with how it's turning out but I still need to polish a few things. While I tried this concept where only one picture can be seen at a time before, I feel like it didn't work out and I kinda left it on the side until now.

TBH, I wouldn't know either if it wasn't because my wife is a psychologist (and she requested this painting).

i had an idea for what i called a "historical-abstract" painting, taking a particular moment in history I am interested in, and conveying it in abstract form. This is my third painting ever and I'm kinda limited in supplies, so ive got no clue how good it came out but this one is called "the unexpected loss of the bohemians at white mountain." it kinda took on a life of its own after i had learned someone im no longer friends with but still hold deep sympathies toward had suffered a miscarriage, with that sort of shock ultimately getting all intertwined with the original idea, hence the titles "the unexpected loss."
I used a mixture of spray paint, acrylics, oil, superglue, and a handful of other household materials, and used some tools like green stuff sculpting prodders and thin plastic clips to make the pikes on the bottom section of the painting. I think it came out good but its hard to tell if ive achieved what i wanted with a style like this.

I've been painting since September 2023! I got good enough to get comissioned, it's cool.

I started here after one of my kittens made the cutest face

I wasn't satisfied so I went all in on developing better skills. Purple kitten is the same one, around November

Friends and strangers from FB art groups got interested so I made some memorial portraits, and regular portraits of beloved pets

This guy took me ages but I loved the result

I spent too long on the seafoam and I still wasn't satisfied. The first person I painted, and the first beach. By this point I upgraded to liquitex professional heavy body acrylics

I paint birbs for pleasure, both got sold QUICKLY

My best sellers are the minis, 4x4 in / 10x10 cm, I usually do just the face but full body on a small space is cool af

A Christmas gift for my brother, and the first time I attempted dramatic light

Bunnies, I love them

I don't get a ton of pups but I love them too

Loved the texture on this guy

A very good girl

This is where I started with bigger pieces (30 x 30 cm)

I got some water soluble oils but I've only painted this guy with them, sadly. I'm fully booked and I have chronic fatigue so my painting time is VERY limited

Serious portrait vs what I wanted to paint

This goddamn one taught me not to accept rush orders. It threw my schedule off completely and my client ghosted me for a WEEK so they didn't even get it on time

And finally my latest WIPs. I'm really happy with the orange and white kitty

Thank you!

I was very unsatisfied with my progress at the beginning, so I started looking up theory and technique videos and that helped me out a ton. I still watch some but I'm doing my own thing, mostly, and trying to have fun since comissioned work can be a bit mechanical, and a lot of the time the reference photos I get are AWFUL.

I did spend like 6 months without painting because I got sick with covid around June last year. I missed it. And I have an 80x60 cm memorial portrait pending for a friend, of his parents. It's a ton of pressure but I need to finish the kitties first.

How many hours a week do you put in? I agree with the others that seems real good real fast. Did you have an existing art background and just picking up a new medium?

I got pretty bad chronic fatigue so I can paint for 2 hour intervals, then lay down at least another 2. For that prolific period I painted nearly every day I'd say. This December I probably painted 4 hours per day, but I got a method and experience now so it takes less time and effort (except the roses, zero experience there).

As for previous background, I loved drawing as a kid, but after age 15 I did it VERY sporadically, and not a lot of painting experience either, just dabbled here and there.

Recommendations on media for smooth gradient transitions?

For a few months I have had this desire to create art which is the smooth gradient of sky blue to horizon white.

Acrylics doesn’t seem like it would do the job. But oil painting is a pain in the butt. I place a premium on easy/clean-ish setup/put-away.

Pastels (still kind of messy)? Colored pencils?

My money is on watercolor as the best option for this. Look up a few tutorials on washes and you'll be able to easily make all the gradients you could want. It just lends itself to that sort of technique so it'll be pretty efficient.

Oil wouldn't be a bad choice if you dont mind spending a lot of time blending. And it's forgiving because while it's wet you can just keep on working until its where you want it to be. The worst part of using acrylics would be the much faster drying time, since you'd want to work wet into wet for this. But you can fix that with a slow drying medium if you really wanted to use acrylic.

But I'd still choose watercolor out of the three if you just want to do gradients. It's also very easy to clean since it's water soluble and all. Some pigments can still stain and all but that's an issue with all paints.

Check out my enormous testicles in my TFLC log!

Yeah, I would say watercolors, look up a technique called edge-pulling for example. There are other way and you can go really far into the rabbit hole of pigments and paper.
In fact, what it sounds like you want to do is working wet-on-wet and then you'll get the best results with Arches or Fabriano 100% cotton watercolor paper and I would recommend Daniel Smith or Schmincke paints. Honestly, you will be better off with a few very good tubes (cerulean blue, ultrmarine, indanthrone blue, new gamboge and alizeron crimson and those will allow you do almost everything) over two dozen cheap ones especially with what you have in mind.
brushes is less important but if you want a suggestion for your goals: medium squirrel mop.

If you want to go hogwild on palette building, check out Jane Blundell's blog.

I think this will keep you busy for a while, let me know if you have more questions.

I'm pretty pleased with this guy, for making him in two days

Daylight picture!

I got to use my brand new mini airbrush and FINALLY a heart shaped panel, I really enjoyed the experience.

As for gradients... since I do acrylics, I keep the paint in the surface wet with a fine mist water spray thing, and lots of practice using a soft brush to blend. Use pleny of paint, too. And I know there's media that make acrylics dry longer, but haven't tried that

Also finally done with this guy. This is a phone picture but I can't figure out using my actual camera, the paintings always look strange

Thank you! What has been working is that I use a wash of a similar color to what I want for a background and then paint over that. Or use a complementary color, that works well too

BLURRED SWEET STREETLIGHTS SPEEDING PAST, FAST
i started messing around with paint this year and this is the first thing ive spent more than a couple of hours on

i found an old skateboard in the garbage and tried to recreate the design from the door of paul walkers car in the first fast and furious movie on it

its been a lot of fun and a learning experience. only realised about halfway through the process that i was trying to replicate a multi-layered airbrush design with a single acrylic brush pass and so missed a few opportunities to mask things off and get some more intricate details, and my orange background has too much red in it :( , but im still really satisfied with the result. I can not skate.

Hi artist goons

I am not an artist, but I do have a painting that has a couple of stains on it from being underneath a lovely AC unit.

Does anyone have any ideas/knowledge regarding how to clean it? It's on canvas, and I'm worried that I'll smudge the painting if I try to do anything with water (this might be fine? don't know and don't want to try yet). Not sure what medium was used, but it seems like regular old paint to me rather than any water or oil based stuff. It was made in an art class so probably cheap

JuniperCake

Acrylic and oil paints will not reactivate with water when fully dry at least.

But there are some other paints that do. The only ones I know about are probably not paints you'd be very likely to use on canvas but there's a lot of different kinds of paint out there. I wouldn't be 100% confident without knowing what kind paint is used.

That said, if its from an intro art class, there's a very good chance it's acrylic though. Given that it's been under an ac unit and probably been exposed to a lot of moisture already and isn't just a mess, it's probably a safe enough bet. If that's the case you're safe to use a damp cloth and even a little mild soap. I'd definitely test in a little area to see if any paint comes off before trying to clean the rest of it.

But whatever you do while cleaning it, don't get any water on the unprimed side of the canvas. It's just the raw fibers on that side without any primer to protect them from the moisture/shrinkage/etc.

Ditto to the probably acrylic sentiment. Especially if it is glossy/shiny. If its matte there's still a possibility that its something like an acrylic gouache that can also be cleaned.

What caretakers and people who clean up art generally do is test on the sides if possible or a less obvious part of the painting. Just initially with like a qtip and a little water to see if you pick up any color. If that doesnt pick up any up and wont pick up the staining elsewhere then test again with a little extremely diluted dish soap.

Thought I'd post a few watercolors I've done recently. Started last November after I got a bunch of holbein paint on a trip to japan and have been trying to do one watercolor (almost) every day. First couple notebooks were pretty rough but beginning to get a bit more confidant, read a book on perspective which really gave me a lot of confidence whenever I can use those learnings. I'm working through some notebooks that I realize now are kinda bad watercolor paper but when I do lean on the pen side things seem to be alright.

Most recently for practice I'm filling my latest notebook with screenshots from FF7 rebirth which I'm playing through now. Kinda leaning on the pen side a bit because I like the stability from linework, though sometimes it definitely takes a while if I do a lot of perspective work.

The lighting and colors are kinda bad a lot of the time but it's nice way to get interesting references.
