Pencil first to nail the proportions / anatomy. I prefer mechanical pencil, so it isn't so obvious. Go to life drawing workshops. Dr. Sketchy's is great but there are usually workshops hosted by colleges in most towns. It is a small fee but really, figure drawing every week will help anyone improve, if they work at it.

Thanks for this! I find my pencil sketches always super obvious underneath watercolor-- can you suggest any way to make it less obvious? Maybe I need to use a lighter hand when I sketch...
