Is there some sort of incompatibility between iPad 1 and iPhone 4S charger/usb cables?

My father just bought a cable for his girlfriend's 1st gen iPad, and it won't work, but works perfectly with her 4S.

Nope, they should work perfectly. Are you connecting it to a computer or charger? If it's not an official Apple cable it may just be a bad cable that isn't playing well with the iPad wanting to draw more power or something, but that's just a wild guess.

Yeah, I figured that as well. I'll tell him to just get a new one/exchange it, then. Thanks!

I take a lot of handwritten notes both at work and lately in a few night courses that I've been taking.

Is note-taking on an iPad viable? Is there any stylus that even approaches the experience of writing on paper?

Edit: also, is the OneNote app any good?

Is there a case for the iPad 4 that is relatively similar in format and quality to the official ones but not as expensive? There's so much garbage to sort through it just become an exercise in frustration.

Get a rooCase Origami - about $20, it is solid in all orientations, provides decent protection, doesn't add a lot of bulk, and is generally the best non-keyboard case out there. I got mine from Amazon.

Either I'm terrible at searching or they've simply stopped selling non ipad Air/mini cases. I'll keep looking, thanks for the tip!
