Outstanding dog there, would pet repeatedly.

This is a puppy that my girlfriend and I rescued from the streets of Alexandria, Egypt. People over there don't really treat dogs well (though there are some legit dog lovers), and we found this little girl wandering around a busy street after someone dumped her in a cardboard box there. We took her home, fed her (that's torn up pieces of bread you see on the floor, not puppy poo poo), gave her a bath, and insured that there was always water in that creepy water dish you see in the foreground. A wealthy Egyptian friend of ours ended up adopting her, and I hope she's doing well.

Here's some pups that we befriended in South Sinai.

And here's a dog that tried to adopt ME. She followed us back to the beach that we were camping on, and she attached herself to me after I had to bellow like a madman and wave a palm frond over my head to deter a pack of territorial wild dogs from attacking her. She wouldn't leave my side after that, and I named her Snowy for her fur. One morning, I woke up and she had wandered off.

I met some rad stray/abandoned dogs over there and really wish I could have taken them all home. :(

Today is the ten-year anniversary of my beloved Golden Retriever Bacchus passing away. He was such a great dogge- adventurous, playful, loyal and also mischievous and a real punk sometimes. The first night we had him as a puppy, he was whining a lot, so I built him a fort out of couch cushions and read Superman comic books to him until he fell asleep. As he got older, he developed hip dysphasia and arthritis, but when I would take him swimming, he would run around like he was a puppy and act like he was three years old again, and only turn on the labored steps when he was called back to the car to go home.

He grew up in Oregon with me, and lots of my happiest memories were of running around the woods with him. When he turned 12 and it was obvious that he didn't have much time left, I took him back up to the Bay Area (where I was living and going to school) to do all of those things that he loved to do. We went for as long of walks as his shaky old legs could take him, to the beach, to the woods, and I spoiled him rotten- hamburgers for dinner nearly every night, first dibs on the couch, etc. I even threw a BBQ so all my friends could see him one last time, and he scored so many hot dogs that day it would probably put a Japanese competitive eater to shame.

I took this picture on our last trip into the forest together. He was so happy, running around and sniffing all the best sniffs, until it was time for him to take a break before we walked back to the car.

You're such a good boy, Bacchus. I miss you.

Growing up in Oregon, I used to jump off a big tree leaning out over the Deschutes River. I'd have to swim up to the surface quickly and try to anticipate where my 90-lbs Golden Retriever would be, because he would be hauling rear end in the water towards me. If I wasn't able to dive under him, I'd get scratched by his paws so badly it looked like I'd fallen under a thresher. Once I would get beyond him, I'd stand up in shallower water, catch his front paws, and hug him as his back legs sank and guide him back to shore.

Repeat like 50x a day until boy and dogge were exhausted. One of my fondest memories.

Both exceptionally good dogges and enjoying the snow like all good dogges do.

Thanks all. It's been a rough, long day. Lots of crying, lots of talking about favorite memories.

Whats odd, and this is the first time in 24 years that I/we have not had a dog, how quiet it is. So many sounds that at times drove us nuts; deciding to eat (LOUDLY) right in the middle of an important part of a TV show, or the snorts, or the woowoo sounds, or the sneezes, or the click of the nails on the tile, or just the breathing, the BARRRORRROOOROOOOOROOOO when someone knocks on the door. The only boxer I've ever heard that sounded like a hound dog when he barked. The peeeeeew of his silent but deadly farts. But it was the sounds and smells of normalcy.

Now that its not here, we miss it.

He is a good dogge. Rightfully wary of strangers at times, but warmed up once he figure out you weren't a threat. Hated being alone so he would follow you from room to room. Loved to snuggle up. A 70lb lap dog. A heck of a pillow. Amazing with kids and gentle with little girls, who were his kryptonite. Loved a bath. Loved a sprinkler. Loved a kiddie pool. LOVED my wife and kid. When my son was a baby, he would sleep under the crib. When the kid was in his rocker, he would sit next to him and snort in his ear (which made my kid roar with laughter) then look away like "I didn't do it" and when my son would quit laughing, he would do it again. We have three dog beds...one in the den, one in my sons room, and one in our bedroom and he would alternate between the three. He would make his rounds through the house, checking on everyone until satisfied, he would turn in for the night; usually in my sons room and sometime in the middle of the night would abandon his dog bed to sleep with my kid. Or he would ease up in our bed like a ninja and I would be awoken by the rhythmic breathing on a boxer snout in my face.

He is a special, sweet boy that we have so many good memories of and those are the ones we'll remember and cherish.

RIP, man. If it makes you feel any better, last night I got visited in my dreams by my old Golden, who died 11 years ago. He was all fluffy and happy, and I got to have a great nuzzling match before he trotted off, happy as can be. I've been under a bit of stress lately with a big change in jobs, and it was like he was popping by to say "Hey man, you got this. Get over here and give me some pets!"

They may be in another place, but they're always as close as your memories and the knowledge that they went out content in knowing that you gave them a great life.

I spent this weekend lounging on the beach with an excellent dogge, of whom I hope to post photos and GoPro vids later, but I just wanted to draw your respective attention to this fine pooch here.

This is an Outer Banks beach dogge, who can I only assume had just received a ton of pettes and was being chauffeured to some other place where he was due even more pettes. I don't normally tailgate, but you can surely loving bet I rode on this guy's bumper for miles just to see more of this smiling pupper.
