Yes! I had a tank with rosy barbs, got them a bigger tank but they were scared, bought more fish so they could school, then got a rescue from my sister of a beacon tetra and a penguin tetra then the penguin terrorised every other fish and needed to be separated, the beacon tetra was lonely so I had to get more, none of these fish are shrimp safe so I needed a separate tank for that.... Then you need a hospital / quarantine tank, breeding tank, maybe another one to grow out any fry or to grow plants unmolested by fish or snails; maybe a tank to grow brine shrimp for fish food if you are into that sort of thing. One tank is never enough! If you're careful you might be able to stop at two or three.

Well I'm currently saving up for a 5ft tank because I impulse bought an electric blue acara without knowing its potential hugeness so I think it has begun thoroughly woops.

Ridiculous eh? Rosy barbs are dirt cheap as feeders or a couple of bucks once they get too big to sell as feeders, tigers I think I've seen for 6 or 7, then blam Denison's at this massive price hike, they are probably the most expensive smallish fish I've seen and I really don't know why. Can't just blame the isolation of my town either, web stores seem to have the same marked up price. Had a thought: it could relate to quarantine issues, they're pretty serious about destructive testing for some fish and maybe their source country is a known disease host. Or maybe they just don't travel well.
My lfs has them at the low low price of 40 bucks each.

I dont know what the hell happened here because I've had two previous thanks with thriving, massive cherry colonies.

where are you getting your cherries from?
i've had trouble with my colonies collapsing until i started getting cherries from different shops (the only way i've been able to keep a colony going is to add 3-4 cherries every time i get supplies and from different shops, my theory is that most shops breed them out back and the shrimp are pretty inbred)

Currently moving house with some tanks (not too far away and the water supply is pretty much the same). Could i get some tips please?

Also i forgot who it was that was having issues with Coburg Aquarium, how far away are you? I'm moving from like 3 streets north of it and really like it as a shop, i've never had any issues with the fish from there except for when one of my rams died like 2 weeks after getting it and they replaced it no questions asked (i should mention that i was there every month or so and would usually chat to the bossman). If you do want to order something from there again (i get it if you don't) i will probably be able to go there and have a look at the fish for you.

Semi related, as i am now in Elsternwick, can anyone recommend me a good fish shop in the area? (subscape is great but parking is a bear)

I think the decision has been made that the betta is going to inherit that tank for his own for the immediate future. I won't try getting anything else in there until I'm 100% confident about him.

Its just a question of whether the tetras move to the goldfish tank on a probational period or if i go and establish my third tank in 3 months. I just know if I do that I'll be all "Now I need more tetras so they can school in their tank and I can still get that black moor for the goldfish and I wonder which of them would like shrimp the most? And what about those tiny frogs?" Because I have to force myself to stop at some point.

you absolutely dont have to stop yourself at any point.

in regards to bettas, my betta splendens lived in a variety of tanks at a variety of times and he was happiest in a heavily planted 20g with a few maculata and shrimp for him to harass occasionally (i probably ended up spending 300-400 on that 4 dollar fish)

i also found a pair of imbellis betta (which i have been trying to find for about 2 years) and broke my number one rule of not impulse buying fish. they are however having a ball in my 35g planted endler/shrimp tank (and will hopefully prevent a frysplosion).

Drunken water changes probably aren't the funnest thing but if you've got a set up where you can easily do that I think its your best bet. And if he dies overnight you'll know at least he died in clean water - or it might be enough for him to hold on longer so you can have a better look at him tomorrow. And if you can't water change and he doesn't make it, maybe his time was up? Sucks either way dude and I really hope he was just having a quiet rest due to a full belly and nothing more sinister.

thanks for the advice everyone, i've been drinking pretty hard since the loss of my fish son but i still have questions:
i can move the tetras to a hospital tank and order fish medicine online, would that be worth it?
if the fish are in the hospital tank (maybe with the plants, although my hospital tank has no light) what would nuke the old tank best(i can totally wait for the bacteria in the filters to rebuild?
would it even be worth it, i've gone from 12 serpae tetras to 3 in the last few weeks so maybe its best if i empty a bottle of gin into the tank?
basically i feel like a failure and could use a hug

I'm thinking of a plain 10g rimmed from PetSmart, get another heater and pump and cycle the tank with a plant/some gravel/wood from the old tank, plus some new stuff until the numbers are right. I've got a big piece of driftwood I've been dreaming of including in a setup and this is an opportunity.

He hides from me when I look in the bucket to feed him so I know he's super stressed :( but he's a fighter so if he survives this he'll have a bigger territory to explore. Fingers crossed.

absolutely cant keep shramps alive, my water conditions appear ideal with the exception of a half dozen ppm of nitrates. i was under the impression that you needed a bit of nitrate in the water for plant growth but i have seen many planted tanks with a shitload of shrimps. for the record i get a dozen or so and in about 3 months it goes down to one or two, there are no bodies from what i observe so i imagine the other shramp ate them.
