Goddamnit, I'm disappointed in how much I like this thing.

especially for 17 out the door with taxes
16, 2 door S, 6 speed, 19k miles. Need to address minor curbing on the passenger front but it got traded in at Jim Ellis Porsche so I don't even need to worry about scraping a dealer vinyl off which is nice. They just wanted to get it off their books before the end of the year.

You guys are really warming me up to a GTI sport, especially at these prices. Back seat good enough for three kids NOT in car seats occasionally? Their primary ride is our explorer so the family truckster goes with them but will need to make sure they can fit from time to time.

I loved my 98 GTI VR6 and in the low 20s a 17 Sport should meet my needs if I can find a manual.

I'm 5'7" and the back seat is perfectly usable as long as no one over 6 foot is driving. Width wise, idk, I haven't had that many people in the back yet.

Can anyone with a Mk7 or Mk7.5 GTI let me know how your engine compartment is painted?

I noticed today that under the hood the paint on my car is a dull / matte red, i.e. there is no clear-coat.

I assume this is normal, just wanting to confirm.

Yes, normal, as in most vehicles.

Took the GTI on her first roadtrip Friday. ATL->Charleston. 37MPG downhill (somewhat conservative) 33 MPG uphill (YOLO). I hate driving long distances but if you're going to have a companion, the GTI is a good one to have. 10 hours in 2 days is something I'd abhor in my e46.

I had the same thing and limped it along as I thought I was out of the standard warranty period; I'd suggest taking it to the dealership for the water pump warranty replacement, though if mine was a hose they said it would be $80 to diagnose and not a warranty repair, obviously. The replacement at least is more sturdy. If you haven't had the suction pump recall done make sure you're below 1/4 tank when you drop it off. This recall started hitting my car right before I took it in and the stench of gas was still there the following morning, though old gas, you know?

I guess I'll run the vin this afternoon, I bought it from a Porsche dealership on trade-in before they could get rid of it, one would've hoped they would've checked for any recalls though maybe not. I am aware of the water pump thing, I may call my local indie that I've bmw business with in the past and ask them, too. Once I filled it back up it seems fine, though it wasn't with Pentosin as I live out in the sticks so I had to just grab what the gas station had in stock. Like I said, *COMPLETELY* dry.

Its a nice car, plenty of power, seems to handle nicely for GT style driving from the limited chance I’ve had to take it on some twisty roads. Rear seat headroom is poor. I’m about 6 ft 1 and I can’t sit upright in the back. I think that will be common to every car which has that kind of sloping roofline though..

That is about what I figured, more looking for caveats/things to look for when buying used. When we need to carry adults in the back, it won't be for long, probably.

Working on a volkswagen is the literal opposite of working on a BMW. I really enjoy the car most days but I will be looking forward to trading it in in a couple years. The engineering involved is just baffling to me in so many ways. It's the absolute definition of a disposable car. I'm not necessarily sure that's a bad thing, but it's a totally different paradigm to my previous ride. I will not be keeping it past 100k.

Everything these days has paper thin sheet metal and turbos and complicated electrics and weird fasteners. Makes for a terrific driving experience, as long as you trade in every few years.

knowing how much of an e36 OG you are, this is a loving terrifying statement.

49k on a 16 base model bought it with 9k in December 17. Put ~115 miles a work day on it for 6 months. Other than the coolant reservoir being bone dry for seemingly no reason one morning, itsonly needed oil changes and the coolant topped up that one time.
