Really looking forward to this one - it's the show I'm most anticipating this season. Here's hoping it's good!

folgore posted:As a general question, do the Japanese often portray high school in an idyllic way? I've never read a manga before this one or watched a lot of anime. Sometimes it feels like Tomoko is loitering in front of the gates to a teenager-only paradise. You have no idea, man. As far as anime is concerned, your life ends somewhere around 20. After that, you're the grizzled authority figure. They idealize the poo poo out of High School in anime.

Painful social awkwardness is every bit as hilarious as I'd hoped.

This is easily my favorite show of the season, so far. Haven't laughed this hard since Daily Lives.

Her fantasizing in Gym class had me in stitches. (I love that even in her fantasies, she has the bruising under her eyes.)

Tenebrais posted:That's a big part of the appeal, really. She's not unpopular because of some cutesy-endearing awkwardness; she actually is an unpleasant person. You can sympathise with her crushing loneliness, but also laugh at things going badly for her, 'cause it has this slapstick quality. That's a great way of putting it, and yeah, you're absolutely right. If anything, I'm finding that it makes the character far more relateable than the typical, clumsy, 'quiet moe girl' that in other circumstances she'd probably be shoehorned into as a character. She's not endearing on every safe, fanservice-baiting level - she's legitimately insecure, socially broken, and selfish, which makes her infinitely more human. Character, not caricature. The result is that I'm rooting for this girl to succeed, even if I would have never been her friend if I met someone like her.

Or read it, if the anime's art-style doesn't agree with you. Its use of rotoscoping is pretty hit or miss.

Seriously, those loving tall chairs. Does anyone actually enjoy sitting in them?

Oh, she's not that bad. Girl just needs some human contact. I'm sure she'd mellow out after college.

Yeah, in spite of people warning that this show was going to be an artistic mess before the show aired, I've been pretty satisfied with the art direction. The many neat animation moments and well-accomplished visual flourishes have really elevated this show.

My stomach dropped when they showed the headphones in the wrong port. This was always teenage-me's worst nightmare when it came to porn browsing. Viva la USB. Harettazetta fucked around with this message at 21:17 on Aug 20, 2013 |

We're apparently watching the most mean-spirited anime ever.Kotaku: Richard Eisenbeis posted:It's just reveling in the pain of a mentally ill person—laughing at a girl who is even more awkward than they were in order to feel better about their own lives. 'Kay, Rich.

Another solid episode, but I dunno if I'm quite on the train to call it the pinnacle of even what they've shown so far. That said... The card game. Oh god. I love you, show. Don't ever change.

Shoo-in for my 2013 anime of the year, so far. I'll miss you, you crazy bastard of a show. Speaking of 'probably-never-getting-a-second-season', I've tried googling, but I've been unable to come up with a site that shows Blu-Ray sales figures for anime. Just how dire are we talking for Watamote's Blu-Ray preorders/sales?
