Is it just me or are ground units behaving super eratically recently? A few weeks ago they used to just go along the road in neat lines, but now they're crossing back and forth over it like it isn't even there, and at times they even seem to hit the reverse. Not to mention all those times they just randomly vanish into thin air even when there's nothing nearby that could have shot them. It makes high-altitude bombing even more of a pain than it already is.

Convoys now actively move off of the road in erratic paths when bombers fly overhead, and theres some new bullshit system in which the game starts to kill off ground units if it decides they aren't dying fast enough.

My Russian lineup tier 10 lineup goes:

La-5
Yak-9K
Yak-9T
Yak-3
IL-4
Premium Peshka

If I bump up to tier 13/14, I usually run this:

Yak-9P
Yak-9K
Yak-9T
LA-7
LA-7-20
Premium Peshka or Yer-2

Basically, never not fly Yak-9's. They're amazing. They have decent speed, they turn pretty well, and they rip everything to many pieces in one or two shots. Also remember when flying LA-anything planes to always aim ahead of the lead indicator. For whatever reason their rounds are kinda slow and they never seem to connect for me if I put them dead on the lead indicator like I would the Yak-9 cannons.

Just graduated to level 6 with America, but god I'm getting raped by Spitfires lately. Seriously I can't make a move on anything the last few games without a Spitfire getting stuck on my tail and I just can't lose them no matter what. Any advice? Maybe I just need some more dogfighting practice?

Regardless here's my current lineup:

I replaced my P36C and my Wildcat with the P39's. I was starting to get good with the Wildcat though, it's especially useful in capture games since it's easy to land and has a decent turning circle but I love the cannons on the P39, finally levels the playing field with the larger/heavier aircraft.

Advice from my view as someone who typically flies a lineup with at least 4 spitfires:

You aren't going to be able to out turn a spitfire in any of those planes, I think every one of your planes other than the Dauntless will go faster than a spitfire at that tier, and be able to climb better.

Try and play that to your advantage with shallow dives to build speed to escape a spitfire behind you, whilst doing a simple sine wave type maneuver which will throw off most pubbies

Start the round by getting a bit of a height and zooming down a clueless person before he realises you're there. Even if you don't kill him, you should have enough speed to escape safely without having them stuck behind you.
You can't win by turn fighting in a Aircobra, but with good energy management and some selective targetting they are nice planes. They also hunt bombers well.

Well, the plane in question appears to be single prop, so at least the skills would transfer more than attempting to land a 747 without an autopilot, or something.

I honestly have no idea, I've never flown a plane in my life, but one probably shouldn't underestimate the time spent behind a joystick for basic understanding of how the plane behaves, and how you expect it to behave.

It's obviously not comparable, but a simple thing like understanding the concept of recoil, bullet drop and simple breathing techniques*, gave me a considerable head start when it came to the firing range when I was in the military, and that was all stuff I'd picked up from years of shooters and military sims.

It's at least not unthinkable that hundreds of hours in a flight sim would make you better prepared than someone without, for an emergency situation like that.

* Thanks, America's army! Propaganda that apparently works.

My cousin is a commercial airline pilot, back when he was learning and getting his licenses, he bought a good joystick setup with twin throttles and all that so he could practice flying in Microsoft Flight Simulator. He would fly modern non combat planes in realistic scenarios though, not charging his beaufighter into the wings of enemy biplanes like I do.

For certain family birthdays he has rented a Cessna for a few hours and taken family members for a flight around the area. It just got me thinking incase he ever takes me out for a flight one day and passes out!

Artificer posted:

How does one counter an oncoming BnZer? I get that you're supposed to turn into his dive, but that puts you on the defensive constantly and you have no way of fighting back, only reacting to his actions.

If you're flying something turny, you can turn underneath them so they have to dive down at a straight 90 degrees down to get you, or as close as. Suddenly reversing your direction at that point will make them have to aileron roll 180 degrees round aswell and probably make their camera flip out somewhat. If they manage to keep behind me after this, I like to wait until they're a few seconds off and then rudder turn out of the way. You turn around crazy quick and you lose height (and trying to aim down when you're doing 850km/h in a 109/190 is quite difficult).
To rudder turn right, aim the reticle 170 degrees behind you like you're trying to turn around by swooping round to the right. As soon as you've done this, hit E and S together and hold it till you're round.
To go left, aim around your left till your recticle is at 190 degrees, then hold Q and S.

Sometimes dying is just unavoidable though, as they're normally coming at you in a fast plane with lots of cannons, and they've got the advantage.

Sure the 109's get faster, but so does your spitfire/LA/Yak, and you get more shooty cannons just like they do. If you can survive the initial boom and zoom, you can absolutely dominate them in a turn fight.
The tier 13 spit and most LA planes will climb as well as most 109's too. So you can even get to their height, and then out-turn them and shoot their tail off. My general game starting technique at tiers 11-13 brits is to shallow climb, head-on something and kill it with my 4x hispano cannons, then dive down and get in a brawl with whatevers below me until I die.

With my remaining planes, I just head straight into the furball out of spawn unless theres anything special I need to shoot first (basebombers and the like)

After playing the Typhoon for a couple games, having 4x Hispanos is pretty sick, and if its an energy fighter it seems like a good way to change it up mid-match when Spitfires aren't working.

I'm also kind of curious if the Spitfire F. Mk XVI at the next tier is any good, or significantly different from other Spitfires, since I never see anybody talk about it.

Sidesaddle Cavalry posted:

Inquiring minds over here also wish to know about the Cannon 'Stang as well, looking to replace the Tier 5 Beau with it.

Also I'm far too bad at this game to know what the Spit XVI is really good at, but historically its sawed-off wings allowed it to roll faster but hurk, it don't climb so good. Here's where I talk out of my butt as well: rolling faster allows you to change the direction of your bank more easily, say to chase someone who's also hard banking, or to throw a pursuer's aim off by doing a quick bank-turn-unbank for a sideslip.

The british premium mustang is amazing. Its got the firepower of a beaufighter V, in a plane that flies like the tier 13 spitfire. It climbs good, it turns good, it handles alright in a high speed dive, and you can load it with stealth ammo and destroy most planes before they've even realised theyre being shot at.

The mk16 spitfire is also very good. It doesn't turn quite as tightly as the mk5, but its alot faster, rolls extremely well and has .50's instead of .30's which can be quite useful when you're reloading your cannons.

I've killed pubbies before for stealing my kills, but for me it really depends on the circumstance. Its quite annoying when you find a lone enemy, knock out his elevator, tail control, an engine, and set 3 different fires, to watch it go into an obvious death dive straight towards the ground/mountain, and then some gently caress swoops in, plinks it once and zips off again to get the kill credit.
Its quite excuseable in a furball and there's poo poo going on everywhere, everyone just spraying bullets at everyone else and you can't really tell who's chasing what, then fair enough.
