Shalcar, your State of the Hattori was very interesting. I noticed a couple of places where you've handled things differently from what I usually do. Could you explain your thinking for the less experienced?

I'm very fond of roads, and I noticed you haven't built any. Is that just because of the Hattori's chronic money problems?

I've had better results with large ashigaru armies, while you seem to prefer smaller samurai armies.

I see you seem to be bee lining the cost reduction talents on your ninja. Is that what you usually do, or is that because you're still chronically poor?

The main use of roads is to reduce the time it takes for your reinforcements to get to the front lines. In central Japan, each province is very close together and so you have to spend a lot of koku to make a meaningful difference in travel time. In addition, no matter what level of roads I use, it's going to take 2 turns to move from my production provinces to the front lines. Later on, key provinces like Omi and Ise will get roads, as they will be the major movement routes to our soon to be eastern holdings. Roads are also useful as a small replenishment boost that is quite cheap, but we don't have any major attrition areas to take advantage of it. Since roads are relatively cheap and quick to build, I really only worry about them when I can get some use out of them. If we were the Date or Uesugi for example, roads would be a huge priority, as they have a very long way for their forces to travel!

With the Hattori units 25% more upkeep intensive than their counterparts, the cost effectiveness of ashigaru takes a pretty severe hit compared to their most expensive samurai counterparts. This is especially true as ashigaru can't really operate behind enemy lines to the degree that samurai can, so the extra cost isn't entirely offset by the additional utility. Our armies are still very ashigaru heavy, but they will tend more towards samurai and specialist units than other clans. It's also very easy to quickly raise a large ashigaru force, but almost impossible to do the same for samurai forces. As a rule, it's better to keep slowly bringing samurai online even in more peaceful times, just so that you have them on hand for when you really need them. It's also indicative of the heavy investment we have into economic and military aspects, it's not very often you go for monks, kisho ninjas, all the samurai AND heavy cavalry in the same game!

I find it incredibly useful to have one or two ninja that are focused on cost reduction (usually one on survival and my super secret LP plan like Chisato and one on army sabotage) as these are the two things which can really pull you out of the fire in an emergency. Army sabotage costs especially can be colossal, so having an agent that is always able to deal with critical events no matter your financial situation is very handy. You do lose some of your flexibility, but it's made up for by letting you run more ninja at once. It's a personal and LP choice more than anything, it's always a good idea to have several ninja capable in different areas. I'm hoping to show off a use for ninja that doesn't appeal to most, because it's perhaps a little more obscure than maximum assassination and kill anyone that breathes (which is also great!).

e: If you have ever dealt with the endless wave of level 2/3 missionaries from the Otomo, the idea of a ninja with full assassination skills who has free missions has incredible appeal...

They are indeed called Benkei's Blades in-game. I might throw up a list of what DLC you would need to have in order to use each various hero units if people are having trouble with which ones they want to use.

Remember that you can change what your clans and heroes/flags are all the way up until the tournament starts, so feel free to jump in and change your mind later if you want!

The Mightiest Walls

Winter of 1549 (Enemy Turn)

"The Ikko Ikki have dealt with your oppression of the people for too long!" stated the Ikko Ikki ambassador. "This is a formal declaration of war!"
Yasunaga's eyes narrowed. "Turn around, leave my lands and you will keep your head. Traitors are not tolerated here."
"Your threats ring hollow" spat the ambassador. "You and your children will fall, ending the tyranny of your rule."
The ambassador staggered back, Yasunaga's glare full of cold fury.
"The price of threatening my family is death" stated Yasunaga, coldly. "You have sealed the fate of those you serve. Leave and never return."
"You can never stop the people" spat the ambassador, retreating down the hall. "Your time will end."
Yasunaga motioned to the guards.
"Follow him" ordered Yasunaga, gesturing towards the fleeing ambassador. "If he travels in any direction but away from Hattori lands, kill him."

Betrayal! The Ikko Ikki have turned their back on honour and decided that we are weak and vulnerable, issuing a declaration of war. This is madness, as the Ikko Ikki already have many strong enemies, so to add another one is... foolish. Sometimes, no matter how much the AI likes you and how well defended your provinces are, they will declare war. Because I like giving our vassals something to do, I call in our allies, although I don't expect them to do anything at all. It's just nice to get the "At war with a common enemy" boost. The war declaration means that we are no longer trading with the Ikko Ikki, costing us ~300 koku a turn as well as our only supply of warhorses and crafts. This is a real problem, as we need the crafts for the next upgrade of our markets and we need the warhorses for cavalry heavier than Light Cavalry. Alternative arrangements must be sought.

"I have placed you and our children in terrible danger" stated Yasunaga as the call to arms blared around them. "My men and I will fight to the last, but if we are not enough... get them to safety."
"I wouldn't be anywhere else" his wife replied, her naginata at her side. "Don't go worrying about us, you take care of yourself. Be safe out there and come back in one piece."
"I can help!" announced Masanari, looking every inch the warrior in his armour, a bow at his side. "The archers will fight better with me there and the enemy will run from us!"
Yasunaga ruffled Masanari's hair gently. "You must stay here with your mother and younger brother. If I fall, you will have to look after the family."
"Ok dad" replied Masanari, trying to keep a stoic face. "I'll protect the family."
"Be brave, my son" replied Yasunaga, gently. "For all our sake."

The Ikko Ikki waste no time attacking the prize of our empire, Omi! Yasunaga's forces of 1 Light Cavalry, 1 Hattori Yari Samurai, 4 Hattori Yari Ashigaru, 2 Hattori Bow Ashigari, 1 Samurai Retainers and 1 Hattori Kisho Ninja must defend against the Ikko Ikki force of 2 Light Cavalry, 5 Bow Ronin and 2 Ikko Ikki Yari Ashigaru. We are outclassed in both range firepower and in cavalry, so things are looking like they might be quite painful. Bow Ronin are especially deadly against Bow Ashigaru, even if they are behind walls. Yasunaga's Gomuyumi retainer providing a +10 accuracy boost to our ranged units could be the extra punch we need, as it's a roughly 50% increase in killing power for our Bow Ashigaru.

Cost: 800

Available only to the Ikko Ikki, Bow Ronin have improved stats compared to the Bow Samurai, which they replace. In exchange, however, they have less men in the unit. Bow Ronin are deadly, capable of inflicting serious damage on all but heavily armoured troops.

Ingame encyclopaedia - Bow Ronin posted:

Archery has a long history in Japanese warfare and every samurai is expected to have mastered the art. Less skilled warriors can be trained to fire en masse, but it takes dedication and skill to shoot with accuracy, particularly in the heat of battle. Bow samurai can also shoot fearsome flaming missiles. These troops have high morale and are well-trained so can fight in melee if needed. They are vulnerable if attacked by cavalry.

In early samurai culture, proficiency with the bow was just as important as with the katana. In the 12th century, battles often started with an archery duel between the two factions, signalled by the firing of special whistling arrows. The Sengoku Jidai saw the bow marginalised as warfare changed. Individual battles of skill were replaced by sheer numbers and mass volleys. Also, the arquebus could be used by ordinary foot soldiers, and the spear could be used in close combat.

Click here to see the battle!
The arrows whistled through the air, the sharp crack as they hit the fortifications punctuated by screams of men stuck.
"Prepare to return fire!" the ashigaru captain bellowed. "On my mark!"
"FIRE!" the boyish yell cut through the sounds of battle, as the archers loosed their shots.
"Who gave the order?" demanded the ashigaru captain, spinning around and then coming to a stop. "My Lord, if your father sees you here he will flay us both!"
"I will protect these people!" insisted Masanari, bow in hand. "My father fights too!"
The ashigaru captain tacked Masanari as another wave of arrows rained down, protecting the youth with his body. A man screamed, eyes pleading as he scrabbled uselessly at the arrow in his throat. Masanari's eyes widened and he felt nausea grip him.
"We need to get you out of here right now! Tuck up tight under that fortification and don't stick your head up!" ordered the captain. "Sergeant, send a runner to the Daimyo's personal guard. Let them know Masanari will need an escort the hell out of here!"

The fortifications at Omi are trivial, barely more than a stone wall around a large courtyard. Nevertheless, it's all we have to work with so we need to take full advantage of it. With the large number of enemy ranged troops, it might be worth abandoning the fortifications and engaging head on! Use of our Kisho ninja for silent strikes is a poor choice, as the improved visual range of Light Cavalry lets them see right through the deception. We will need to be on the lookout for any opening, as otherwise our forces will be shot to pieces!

In the surrounding chaos, the ninja remained cool, calm and collected. The ninja captain held up his fist.
"They enemy are scaling the walls" he stated. "On the signal, show them the power of the Hattori. NOW!"
Firebombs rained down upon the helpless Ikko Ikki forces, men screaming as they fell from the outer walls, those bunched up below to avoid the arrows caught in the deadly explosions.
Ikko Ikki forces started to pour over the wall, but the ninja were prepared, moving silently and efficiently through them, painting the ground a ghastly crimson.
The ninja moved gracefully, like wisps of smoke on a becalmed day, always managing to be where the enemy strike was not. Soon enough, the ground was littered with corpses and no more Ikko Ikki came, the sounds of the Ikko retreat a beautiful melody to the weary Hattori.

An impressive showing of our brand new Light Cavalry! Light Cavalry still have a surprisingly powerful charge given their low combat statistics and small number, but they can still act as powerful shock cavalry in the right situation. Unlike more expensive cavalry, Light Cavalry can be used in situations where it would be too risky to commit elite forces, as they are cheap and easy to replace while still packing almost all of the punch. Our forces are in much better shape than I had expected, good enough shape that we are already close to our war footing. We don't have the forces to push back just yet, but it's time for Total War.

Yasunaga rushed over. "Is he all right?"
"He's fine, my Lord" reported the ashigaru captain. "A little shaken, but unhurt."
Yasunaga swept Masanari into a hug. "Don't you dare do something that stupid again."
"I'm sorry dad" sniffled Masanari. "I just wanted to be like you."
"One day you will be" replied Yasunaga. "Be a child a little longer, some horrors no man should have to face."

As you can see, the Light Cavalry 'only' killed 40 men, but expensive Bow Ronin with low numbers means a large amount of experience for that unit, enough to push it to rank 5! The other great performers were the Kisho Ninja, effortlessly cutting through a hundred enemy soldiers, their only casualties from their own mis-thrown bomb! Despite their large number of kills, they don't receive a rank, as they are very expensive and so require a huge number of ashigaru kills to get reasonable experience.

Spring of 1550

"My Lord, I have news but perhaps now is not the time" stated the attendant. "The affairs of state can wait."
"No, they can not" replied Yasunaga. "What news?"
"The redevelopment of the farmlands, mercifully untouched by the enemy, have been completed" reported the attendant. "Much more land is workable and as a result, food will be even more plentiful here."

Our food capacity continues to grow, as Omi's farms are improved to Terrace Farming. While the wealth boost is reasonable (+300 wealth) for a Very Fertile province like Omi, the real prize is the extra food which will let us further develop our economy, something that will be sorely needed as our demand for soldiers grows.

Cost: 1950

The third building in the Farming chain, Terrace Farming, provides an additional +100 wealth and another food.

Ingame encyclopaedia - Terrace Farming posted:

Terrace farming increases the amount of land that can be cultivated, and so adds to the wealth and potential tax income of a province. Eventually farmers will use every square inch of level land available, at which point they must make more. By carefully shaping the hills into a series of giant steps, new land can be created that is suitable for farming. Each step becomes a new, ribbon-shaped paddy field that hugs the contours of a hill. If this is done cunningly - and there is little point doing otherwise - water is used and re-used as it flows downhill over the terraces.

Terrace farming is used in many parts of the world with mountainous landscapes. The landscape is carefully formed into a system of contour-following platforms, with water cascading down from the highest level to the lowest. The result is an extremely efficient use of available space, even where paddy fields are not used; in the Andes of South America terraces were used for virtually all crops, for example. The result is also extremely picturesque, and an impressive piece of human, manual landscaping. The technique still finds favour today because it can stop heavy erosion and help prevent landslides as well as being an effective agricultural method.

"These are the results of the mustering?" questioned Yasunaga. "A regiment of bowmen?"
"Yes, my Lord" the attendant replied. "Omi has limited facilities for mustering compared to Iga."
"It is said that a bowman who can hit one in four is good enough" boomed Yasunaga to the troops. "But that is not good enough for Hattori soldiers! Every man will shoot two in five or I will know why!"

Extra Light Cavalry will be essential to round out our forces and Kawachi delivers, at a far more opportune time than I had thought they would be! Our forces in Omi also receive an incredibly welcome boost with an additional Hattori Bow Ashigaru, while Taketoshi gets an additional Hattori Yari Ashigaru in Awaji for garrison duty.

The dockyards creaked and groaned with the hustle and bustle of constructing lumbering ships of trade. War had come, but without gold, war would be lost.

Our shipwrights have been working non-stop to produce an even greater trade fleet to take advantage of the trade node that we have secured. With the rapidly deteriorating situation, this may be an over-investment in that trade node as resources which would previously have gone to protecting it now have to be spent elsewhere, leaving them vulnerable.

To Yasunaga, the war had been distant, political. That he was in harms way was a fact of life, but the tides of war had threatened something he valued far more than his life, family. A cold, bottomless dread gripped his heart at the thought of how close he came to losing his son, how his rash actions to bring his family to Omi almost cost their lives. He had wanted to spend time with his children, to watch them grow and play in this land of plenty, but he now knew that was foolish and selfish. He was Yasunaga, Daimyo of the Hattori and he would see his enemies burn.

Whenever you win a siege defence battle in winter with your Daimyo, he will gain the "Mirror of Amaterasu" trait, which further increases the morale of men under his command by 1. While there is no real way to force it to happen, it's an incredibly useful trait which can give your Daimyo's force a real edge in everything from siege attacks to defending against an ambush! Yasunaga has no time for those who would threaten his family, nor do the Hattori take kindly to betrayal! This is the start of a fight to the bitter end.

"Warships sir! Flying Ikko Ikki colours!" the assistant exclaimed. "They have already set fire to two merchant vessels and none can pass them!"
"Our options are limited, I agree" replied the harbour master. "Very well, secure what cargo we can onshore and post a guard from the local garrison suitable to repel them if they land."
"What can we do?" question the assistant.
"Do?" responded the harbour master. "There is nothing to do, we wait to be relieved."

The Ikko Ikki have inflicted a double blow however, by blockading our port in Ise. This is a huge issue, as their fleet is greater than ours, so I have to sit back and eat the trade income loss of ~200 koku a turn. Already we have lost ~500 koku a turn from this war, the economic cost is growing fast!

"My Lord, a message from the Honma" announced the messenger.
"Good news, I hope" noted Yasunaga, opening the sealed scroll.

"Hattori,

Men who can not control their own ports are worthy of neither respect nor the keeping of promises. Our goods will find another buyer, while you languish under another's thumb.

- Honma"

The Homna, who now no longer get trade income due to the Ise blockade, have broken their trade agreement and are looking for other clans to trade with. This is now a huge blow, as even when I do manage to retake the port, it will be of limited value. With the trade agreement so new, there is a penalty for breaking it, but it applies to both sides. We are now a little bit less liked in Japan, which is not a situation I want to find myself in. This is starting to have the feel of a Total War spiral.

The orders had been coded with gold braid, a message from the Daimyo himself of the utmost importance. Her agents had told her of a betrayal, an attack upon Omi where Yasunaga and Masanari had to fight for their lives. There was no sympathy for traitors, no effort too great to destroy them. Hattori honour had been insulted and the ruling family threatened. The orders had been cryptic, Yasunaga's faith in Chisato's skill complete. The scroll had contained but a simple missive:

"You already know what they have done and who they are.

Kill them. Kill them all. Strike until you can strike no more and they live in fear.

The reaper is coming for those who betray us."

In the darkness, Chisato steeled herself for the mission ahead. There was no grey here, no great politics. This was revenge. This was personal.

I need some revenge and I need it badly. If we were to simply chase the Ikko Ikki force that attacked Omi, they would retreat, likely outside of our capacity to pursue them and still protect Omi. Instead, Chisato is dispatched to sabotage that army. This will not only kill a few of the soldiers in it, but also prevent it from retreating for the rest of the turn. It's a little expensive considering what we gain, but messages must be sent. Those who threaten Masanari will be obliterated to the last man.

The Ikko Ikki cowered around their fires. Guards were posted in twos and threes, but still, night after night, men were found dead, murdered in dozens of different ways. Nothing stopped it, no action seemed to have any effect. Some men tried to flee, their dying screams echoing through the night, testament to the folly of traitors. Tales of terror swept through the camp, a dark female figure moving at a distance, only to vanish into thin air. These men were marked for death, cursed by their own action. There would be no redemption here.

Revenge will be mine! With this glorious success, there is now nothing stopping us demonstrating to the Ikko Ikki the complete and utter error of their ways. Is there nothing Chisato can't make better? :getin:

"I want every man who can walk ready to march in one hour!" ordered Yasunaga. "We have a favour to repay the Ikko Ikki and I plan to return it in full."

The furious defenders of Omi sally forth led by Yasunaga, keen on delivering the reward for traitors.

"Today we send a message to those who wish us harm" declared Yasunaga to the mustered men. "Today we show heaven itself that the Hattori are not shadows in the night, but demons that strike without fear, without hesitation and without mercy."

This time we have a clear advantage, with Yasunaga leading 1 Light Cavalry, 1 Hattori Yari Samurai, 4 Hattori Yari Ashigaru, 3 Hattori Bow Ashigari and 1 Hattori Kisho Ninja engaging the Ikko Ikki force of 2 Light Cavalry, 4 Bow Ronin and 1 Ikko Ikki Yari Ashigaru. We now have a commanding ranged advantage, an insurmountable melee advantage and near parity in cavalry. The Ikko Ikki won't know what hit them.

Click here to see the battle!
"Hold your shots till you can see them!" bellowed the Ikko Ikki sergeant. "These blasted trees and fog will have you jump at shadows! Make sure it's a real target!"
"Sir, I hear something!" noted a soldier. "Here they come!"
"Weapons front!" ordered the sergeant. "Wait for it... wait for it... WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?"
"HATTORI! CHARGE!" bellowed Yasunaga, his bodyguard thundering into the rear of the Ikko Ikki forces with an almighty crash. "Leave no survivors! Don't touch these ones, these ones are mine!"
His blade left a trail of fallen men, their bodies blending in to the forest terrain in the deep fog.

The Ikko Ikki side of the map is heavily forested, making ranged skirmishing difficult and cavalry action ineffective. This is absolutely perfect as Yasunaga and his forces possess a ludicrous melee power advantage. There is will be no finesse in this battle, just raw fury.

Yasunaga fought like a demon, but with the precision of a man battle born and trained. He showed no fear, no remorse, no regrets. He would see the Ikko Ikki obliterated to the last man and he set to work with a cold, calculated and methodical fury. One by one the Ikko Ikki forces fell before him, each enemy slain moving Yasunaga closer to his goal. One thought consumed his mind, one thought that drove him with a force that would shake the heavens.

"They threatened my family"

The numbers tell the story of complete domination. Losses were completely negligible and kills were great, but we failed our primary objective, the complete elimination of every Ikko Ikki soldier. ~100 men of theirs have escaped to fight another day!

Ikko Ikki forces scattered in disarray, running from the Hattori onslaught, fear and confusion sowed deep in their ranks. Many were run down as they fled, the cavalry doing gruesome work. Yet all hope was not lost for the Ikko Ikki as a lone sergeant, desperately trying to salvage what he could, organised a somewhat orderly retreat for the men he could find. The Ikko Ikki would not be eliminated this day.

Despite losing some more Light cavalry, they have reached the rather impressive rank 6. These Light Cavalry have the same level of combat experience as Taketoshi, no mean feat! In addtion, Yasunaga and his bodyguard hit combat rank 3, putting them firmly on the capable warrior list.

"I want trackers on the trail immediately!" ordered Yasunaga. "Sweep the area and find them. They can't have got far."

The battered remnants of the Ikko Ikki assault force fall back, but it is neither fast enough nor far enough to escape the reach of Yasunaga. With the full force of the Hattori behind him, Yasunaga moves in for the kill.

"We have found them, my Lord" a ninja reported. "They take refuge in a small valley nearby, hoping that their small numbers will escape notice."
"I know that valley" responded Yasunaga. "We will move with stealth and speed, none shall hear us coming."

Hey Ikko Ikki - :frogout:

No battle video because it was literally one arrow volley long.

The arrows took the Ikko Ikki forces completely by surprise. As one, they fled into the mist, men running in all directions.
"None escape. Not this time" ordered Yasunaga.
"As you command" replied the ninja, bowing. "Come my brothers, tonight, we hunt rats."
As one, the ninja filtered out into the misty night. The Ikko Ikki were never heard from again.

The result we had all been waiting for, the complete and utter annihilation of the Ikko Ikki attacking forces. If that was their best shot, then we will see them fall and burn.

"Well executed, my Lord" the samurai captain noted, nodding in approval. "However, I doubt that will be enough to convince the Ikko Ikki to seek peace."
"There will be no peace" responded Yasunaga. "The Ikko Ikki are a blight upon the earth. There must be measures taken."

As expected, the bows do the bulk of the killing. The few scattered melee kills were from the after battle round of kills as the units had been reduced below their minimum sizes.

"We have fought well, far beyond what any leader could expect" announced Yasunaga to the troops. "Japan herself knows that there are no finer men than those I see before me. For now, we return home and rest."

Triumphant and having managed to protect Omi, Yasunaga returns to the fortification to replenish his forces and raise an army with a new mission, the total obliteration of the Ikko Ikki.

"It is a sad state of affairs that the Honma and Ikko Ikki seek to antagonise you" noted the Hojo ambassador. "But where there are fools, wise men may prosper."
"What, then, should these wise men do?" inquired Yasunaga.
"Our offer is one of trade, my Lord." responded the ambassador. "I understand that your ports are.. temporarily inconvenienced, but perhaps this gift would convince you of our common interest?"
"Your proposal has merit" Yasunaga noted, nodding. "Very well, I accept your offer of open trade."

We need to replace our trade agreements quickly to maintain our income, so a deal is struck with the Hojo to the east in order to secure more money. Sadly, this is through the currently blockaded port of Ise, so it won't give us money right away, but in a few turns we should be able to break the blockade and restore profitability. The Hojo also have access to the craft trade goods, which we lost access to when the Ikko Ikki declared war on us. If we can manage to get crafts for a few turns, we should be able to get the critical market upgrades we need which will go a long way towards keeping us wealthy and secure.

"These saddles are terrible" the soldier moaned. "The apprentice must have made this one."
"It's a riding saddle" noted another. "It's not meant to be comfortable, it's meant to be reliable in battle."
"It's riding, all right" the first replied bitterly. "Riding right up my bloody unmentionables."

The cavalry reinforcements from Kawachi are dispatched to Omi in order to bolster Yasunaga's force. Given how effective one unit of Light Cavalry has been, two should be even better.

"There is gold to be made" stated the captain. "And I plan to make it!"
"Pirates plan to take it once you have made it" noted the first mate. "I sometimes think they get the better deal."
"Better than being a farmer" laughed the captain. "Come on, let's go get rich."

Our trade ships sail ever onward towards our incense trade node. If they make it there it will all have been worthwhile, but if they don't it will have been a terrible waste of koku at a time when we need it most.

"It is said the bravest men march with no fear" announced Taketoshi. "But I know this is wrong! Even the bravest man marches in fear of me! Let's demonstrate to the Miyoshi that our reputation is not just for show!"

I won't throw my plans away just because the Ikko Ikki turn out to be traitors and everything falls down! Taketoshi marches out with his forces towards the town of Awa. Awa has warhorses, something that we need badly now that the Ikko Ikki are no longer trading them with us. I plan to secure them and finish this Miyoshi war once and for all...

Sorry that this is pedantic, but i's in Japanese are always a long "e" sound. So it's "Eek-ko Eek-kee." The long "i" sound is the dipthong from "ai" together.

That siege defense was pretty rad.

Yeah, those light cav were loving clutch. Without them, that battle line would have been solid and the bow ronin would have have gotten a lot more time to make pin cushions out of your defenders. Nice job.

I'm actually kind of relieved the Ikko finally decided to declare. I was getting really unnerved by them actually holding up their end of an alliance. But now they've backstabbed you, and the universe is in balance once more.

Wow, that siege defense was well played. Sending the Light Cavalry out of the fort to break up their Bow Ronin archer line right as they moved into range, gutting one unit and preventing the others from firing arrows into your outmatched Bow Ashigaru archer defenders as they moved to respond to the charge and allowing you archers to get unopposed shots off at them was a very good move. I know that cavalry aren't all that effective on defense within the small space of the fort, as they have little room the maneuver, but sending them out instead paid off really well for you.

And those Kisho Ninja really did mulch through the enemy Yari Ashigaru that managed to get over the walls in melee after blowing a number off with those firebombs. See them being able to kill all those ashigaru while only losing a few through friendly fire caused by those bombs interacting with the geometry of the wall in a weird way and one more in actual combat was amazing.

Getting that Mirror of Amaterasu trait looks like it'll be pretty handy. +1 morale for all troops under Yasunaga's command is no joke, from what I can see of combat mechanics. You get it for winning a defense of a siege during winter? Hmm, sounds like it would be hard to arrange, but worth it. Just keep a general in a province he just captured the previous turn and hope the enemy sends a stack to grab it back during winter or something like that. Or in a province bordering a clan you're at war with.

Can anyone enlighten (ha!) me as to how the name of Mirror of Amaterasu applies to the trait and its effect in a situation like this? I have a general idea of what a mirror of Amaterasu would be literally referring to, but I don't understand how it would be granted in that specific situation. The name with regard to the effect is easier to understand, but only if take the mirror to be a demeanor like you did in the narrative instead of some sort of concrete object or something like that...

Well, Taketoshi is on another front, taking the fight to the Miyoshi as well as furthering Hattori control of Shikoku and getting a source of warhorses back for creating more cavalry for our armies as well as trade by taking Awa. But I understand the sentiment.

Yasunaga and Chisato themselves should be enough to bring the pain to the Ikko Ikki, what with their martial and ninja skills, respectively. Yasunaga at the head of a large Hattori army populated and reinforced by ashigaru supported by cavalry, ninjas, and samurai that is undoubtedly being trained by shalcar now as he plays his next couple of turns will be sure to make their own presence known to the Ikko.

The Hattori armies being sent with Yasunaga at their head and Chisato in support might not need the fear of the Ikko Ikki to bring Yasunaga's vengeance at this betrayal and the threat to his family and utterly destroy them. But they will have it nonetheless, as the Ikko Ikki know they messed with someone they shouldn't have, and it will help the Hattori wipe them out.

You only get it for winning the siege battle in winter with your Daimyo. It's trickier to set up than you would think.

Amaterasu is the goddess of the sun and also the universe in the Shinto religion. The Emperor of Japan and the Imperial family is said to be direct descendants of Amaterasu, while the Mirror of Amaterasu is a part of the Imperial Japanese Regalia and is thought to be a representation of the sun, with its power to dispel darkness and provide warmth. In game, it represents the Daimyo being a beacon of light and hope for his people, even during their darkest times. As to if it means that your Daimyo somehow possesses the actual artefact or more likely, that they possess the spirit that also infuses the artefact is not specified.

Huh, I had misread the fact that it needed to be your daimiyo winning the battle to get the trait. A little harder, but if you have your daimiyo on the front lines, it shouldn't be too much harder to do using the same method I mentioned before.

Also, I knew what the physical object the Mirror of Amaterasu represented, as well as the legend behind it, but I wasn't sure if the trait represented the actual artifact or some personality trait representing what it is supposed to emphasize. I guess your explanation for the personality trait thing makes sense, so I guess I'll go with that.

If I'm recalling the legend properly, the legend behind the mirror goes like this:

Susano-o, the storm god, Amaterasu's brother and generally kind of a douchebag, wrecked something or other of Amaterasu's. She got very mad at this and locked herself in a cave- somewhere in Ise, IIRC. Since she was the sun goddess, this meant that there wasn't any sun, and hence this caused some problems. So the other gods got together and threw a big party/possibly an orgy, which got Amaterasu's interest. She peeked out of her cave and was dazzled by her own reflection in a mirror and decided to come out. That's the mirror of Amaterasu.

My apologies if I'm completely wrong on this, I'm going by memory and didn't look up anything to confirm.

No that's basically it. In some versions the gods decide to convince Amaterasu that, since she was sulking, they'd decided to replace her. Of course, the only godess magnificent enough to plausibly replace Amaterasu was.. Amaterasu. Hence the mirror. Amaterasu soon saw through the ploy but was flattered anyway.

So it's a pretty basic seasonal myth, winter happens because the summer goddess runs off underground, but she's brought out and we can have spring again.

Yup, that's basically the same story I'm familiar with. IIRC, the thing that Susanoo wrecked was Amaterasu's loom or something like that, when she or one of her handmaidens was working on it, by tossing a carcass of a cow or some other animal or excrement at the thing.

And they got Amaterasu's attention when she was in the cave by banging on an overturned washtub or something similar while one of the minor kami was doing a dance or stripping or something to that effect during the party they threw to try and convince her to come out.

Really loving both the informative nature of this and the character dialogues at each event. Though this most recent update reminded me why I tend to still do two newbish things: auto-resolve cheese with a superior number of inferior units and avoid using cavalry.

Is there any chance you could do a post explaining your preferred method for moving units, putting them in formation, assigning them to groups, etc.? Like for that charge you did during the siege defense, it was absolutely brilliant, but I'd utterly fail at pulling anything like that off myself control-wise. Do you pause at some point during the charge and then do the 'drag formation' movement to pull them away? Or is there a good movement method to get them away quickly and fluidly without pausing? I imagine the timing on when to pull away is mostly instinct, at least.

A Father's Fury

Spring of 1550 (Enemy Turn)

"A singularly dangerous and treacherous foe, the Ikko Ikki" noted the Takeda ambassador. "Without the guidance of a Daimyo, it is no wonder they are disorder itself."
"I had felt perhaps an arrangement could be reached" replied Yasunaga. "But there can be no arrangement with traitors."
"A sentiment shared by the Takeda" agreed the ambassador. "We both have problems enough dealing with the Ikko Ikki without threatening each other. I propose a military alliance, such that we can deal with these rabble without fear of others."
"A noble arrangement" replied Yasunaga. "Very well, an alliance until the Ikko Ikki are destroyed. After that, we will see."

Now this is a double sided offer from the Takeda. Right now the Takeda are under pressure to consolidate their fronts, as they find themselves at war on both sides, something which would end very poorly for them if we were to join in. However, we have a common enemy in the Ikko Ikki, which means that even if I was to push into their provinces, the Ikko Ikki would quickly be able to capture my highly valuable inner provinces. It would be sensible to just turn this down since the Takeda own a province that we need for victory and we would lose honour if we broke this in the next 20 turns. The offer of being able to swiftly end the Ikko Ikki threat by consolidating a border proves just too valuable to resist and we accept. This will come back to bite me, I'm sure, but everything is about buying time to do what needs to be done.

Summer of 1550

"My Lord, our recent investment into construction of terraces and granaries has greatly increased the rice yields" announced the attendant. "Hattori men, women and children need not fear hunger."
"The most excellent news!" grinned the administrator. "Life under the Hattori flourishes, even as others are encased in turmoil."

Our second and last Very Fertile province, Kii, has finished construction of the third tier farm, Terrace Farming. Our food surplus is growing, but we will need every grain of it to sustain both the fortifications we need as well as the economic upgrades.

"Lesser men may have fear in their hearts" boomed the samurai captain. "But we are not lesser men! The samurai of the Hattori are the rocks upon which Japan will be built anew!"

With a multi front war and Yasunaga's forces woefully undermanned for an offensive strike, we begin rapid mobilisation of our troops, producing 2 Hattori Yari Ashigaru in Iga, a Hattori Katana Samurai in Yamato and a Hattori Bow Ashigaru in Omi all with the purpose of bolstering our Daimyo's forces. An additional Hattori Bow Ashigaru is raised in Ise to help bolster the garrison there.

"The waters grow more hostile by the day" the harbourmaster lamented. "Will these ships suffer an unkind fate?"
"All the proper sacrifices were made to the kami" replied the shipbuilder. "They will be fortunate, you will see."

Two Trade Ships are recruited, quite likely the last we will see for some time. Although we don't have enough to put a full fleet on our trade node, we simply don't have any more koku to spend with the war situation the way it is. We will have to hope it is enough.

"The Urakami and the Shoni are consigned to history" Yasunaga stated. "All their nobility and right to rule failed to save them from stronger clans."
"Must everyone be destroyed, dad?" asked Masanari. "Why can't they just get along?"
"The world is full of power hungry people, people who would hurt us" replied Yasunaga. "It is our duty to stop those and protect our people, our families."

Another turn and two more clans fall. Even the mid tier sized enemies are now getting consumed by the other, larger clans. Every enemy is now a formidable one, we are well and truly in the midgame.

"Despite the blows I strike against the Ikko Ikki, we never get chance to strike the head off the serpent" fumed Yasunaga. "Heaven, grant me a chance to strike a blow for justice!"

Through bad luck more than anything, we were unable to kill an enemy general unit in battle within the allotted time. It's no huge loss, as the reward was only a small morale boost for a few turns, but any advantage would have been welcome given the current situation.

"Good wind, good tides and a long way from the Ikko Ikki!" boasted the captain. "Let's keep it that way, full sail ahead!"

Our trade ships continue their merry course towards our Incense trade node. With any luck, they will make it there in one piece, although that is becoming increasingly unlikely!

"My Lord, terrible news" announced the messenger. "A small band of Ikko Ikki forces have struck deep into the heart of Omi. They burn granaries and slaughter peasants unimpeded!"
Yasunaga's fist slammed into the table, making Masanari jump.
"They dare claim to be for the people and then slaughter mine" thundered Yasunaga. "Ready the men and dispatch word to Chisato. I will lead the relief force myself."

The Ikko Ikki have run a small force of troops into Omi and burnt down our farmlands. While the damage is minimal from a repair cost perspective, the actual impact is pretty substantial, knocking an impressive 250 wealth off Omi with the associated loss in tax income.

The camp was noisy, full of men boasting and celebrating, the fires leaping high into the night sky.
"It's easy to pretend to be tough when you slaughter women and children" Chisato thought to herself, recalling the burned bodies left in their wake. "There will be justice done tonight."
Moving quickly and without sound, she slipped past the few lookouts and kept to the shadows. Entering a large tent, Chisato realised that this was not the quartermaster's tent, but was instead filled with sleeping men.
One by one, she moved amongst them like a ghost, pausing only to slit their throats. Slipping back out, she made her way towards the other large tent...

Destruction of our empire will not stand! Chisato is dispatched to ensure that the perpetrators can't escape their call to justice!

She was greeted by the sight of supplies. She had found the tent! Pausing only to wash her blood soaked hands in a water jug, Chisato placed several explosive parcels around the tent, before covering the dried rice in fire powder and setting it alight. Moving quickly to a safe distance, she watched as the men cried out in alarm and rushed to fight the fire in their supplies. Many men had gathered, when a mighty explosion bathed the scene in red light, killing many and wounding others.

Chisato slipped back into the night, her mission a success, justice done.

Glorious success! While this may not be the most glamorous of tasks, keeping your lands secure and undamaged is one of the most important things to staying on top of your game in Shogun 2. Small, raiding armies can inflict many, many times their cost on you, which is something you can't afford, especially in Realm Divide.

"Women and children of the Hattori are being slaughtered by the treacherous Ikko Ikki" thundered Yasunaga to the troops. "This will not stand! We will end this injustice and we will protect those dear to us. Move out!"

We move in Yasunaga to terminate with extreme prejudice. The best way to ensure no survivors is to have overwhelming force and since we can easily make the distance back to Omi, there is no real risk in doing so.

"Right where Chisato said they would be" noted Yasunaga grimly. "I want none left alive."
"Understood my Lord" replied the cavalry captain. "Permission to lead the charge?"
"Denied" stated Yasunaga, flatly. "I failed my people, I will right my wrongs myself."

There is no battle video because it wasn't entertaining. I'll find a good rout one soon, I promise!

Chisato did one hell of a job, killing 25 Light Cavalry and 18 Bow Ronin. Their force of 1 Light Cavalry and 1 Bow Ronin is clearly no match for Yasunaga and his army of 2 Light Cavalry, 1 Hattori Yari Samurai, 4 Hattori Yari Ashigaru, 4 Hattori Bow Ashigaru and 1 Hattori Kisho Ninja.

Blood splashed crimson across the ground, tracing the arc of Yasunaga's sword. "Leave none alive!" he thundered, spurring his horse towards where the Ikko Ikki Ronin were thickest.
An arrow skimmed off his shoulder, deflected by his thick armour. Yasunaga cursed in pain, falling upon the bowman with a powerful blow, nearly severing the man's head from their shoulders. Another soldier moved in to strike, his katana high. Gripping the reins tightly, Yasunaga spun his horse around, sword intercepting the blow. His eyes were steely, a window into a glacial plane, cool white fury.

As expected, the total annihilation of the Ikko Ikki forces under the heel of Yasunaga. Soon it will be our turn to take the fight to them!

"WHERE ARE THE REST!" thundered Yasunaga. "WHERE ARE THOSE BASTARDS?!"
A bodyguard put his hand on Yasunaga's arm. "They are all dead, my Lord. The day is won, your people avenged."
Yasunaga blinked before finally taking a deep breath, the mask of command back in place.
"Thank you" he responded. "I fear we will lose many more before we are safe once again."
"We will be beside you to our deaths, my Lord" replied the bodyguard, saluting. "You should clean up, my Lord, Those ashigaru will think you are hurt with all that blood."

Once again, nothing escaped the fury of the bows, with obliteration the only option of the Ikko Ikki. A well timed cavalry charge routed the Bow Ronin before they had a chance to get a shot off, helping further drive home the value of Light Cavalry.

"You are right about that!" Yasunaga laughed. "They never put all this gore in the tapestries."
"I wonder why that is, my Lord?" questioned the bodyguard. "Perhaps it would scare children and delicate ladies."
"I'm sure the tapestry makers are just bad at weaving gore" replied Yasunaga. "Off with you, before the men talk about you being my mother!"

The many battles against the Ikko Ikki have given Yasunaga valuable experience and caused him to rank up, becoming rank 3, the same level as Taketoshi, our best general.

None could doubt the steel that lived in Yasunaga's soul, the cold, calm fury that he unleashed when needed, nor could they doubt his skill. His unswerving dedication to his duty and willingness to put himself into harms way for his people inspired others. The most unswervingly loyal were his bodyguard, men considered fanatical even by others who had sworn blood oath.

Celebrating the impeccable cavalry control that Yasunaga is quickly becoming famous for, we take a point in Cavalry Commander, giving us access to the Wedge formation for our mounted forces. Wedge is very useful for breaking through thin lines into the softer targets behind them, or for ensuring that the charged unit will be unable to disengage without heavy loss. It's two sided though, as your cavalry unit will also be unable to disengage without heavy loss. Yasunaga and his men are dedicated beyond all others, driven by their commitment to the Hattori line. We take a point in Die Hard Fighter to ensure that Yasunaga and his men will be able to fight to the bitter end, no matter what. Sometimes when fights are down to the wire, it can be critical to have your general hold on just a few seconds longer than theirs, especially if you get caught by surprise and need time for help to arrive.

None could doubt Yasunaga's grasp of tactical excellence and the devastating effect to which he employed cavalry on the battlefield. With but a small detachment of light cavalry, Yasunaga had dealt blow after blow to the Ikko Ikki forces, shattering their offensive. What destruction could he unleash upon those who opposed him if he had heavier cavalry?

Yasunaga is swiftly becoming a force to be feared on the battlefield, with his superior ranged troops, powerful bodyguard and solid command of cavalry tactics. While his style is different to Taketoshi's it is no less effective, giving us a powerful tool to use against our enemies on the eastern front.

"Today, we fulfilled our oaths" announced Yasunaga. "We swore to protect the people and to ensure justice throughout Japan. The good people of the Hattori can sleep well, knowing that such fierce men guard their beds!"

The lands of Omi now once again secure, we move Yasunaga and his forces back to Omi, to ensure the town itself is safe from harm while we continue to bolster our forces for the counter attack.

"Yasunaga is counting on us to do the heavy lifting" boomed the samurai captain. "The Ikko Ikki don't think samurai are natural warriors, let's show them how wrong they are!"

Our Hattori Katana Samurai move north towards Omi, ready to lend assistance to Yasunaga in the counter-attack against the Ikko Ikki.

"I know a great place near here" thundered Taketoshi. "Good food, great wine, wonderful table service and comfortable beds. All we need to do is take it from the Miyoshi! Let's get moving!"

Meanwhile, Taketoshi has not been idle! Moving his forces deeper into the heart of Awa, we prepare to extinguish the Miyoshi as a force in Japan... forever.

"My Lord, a message from the besieging general" announced the scout.
"Give that to me" responded the commander, opening the bound scroll.

"My name is Taketoshi
General of generals
Look upon my siege, ye mighty, and despair
Nothing of you will remain, all around shall be decay
A colossal wreck, boundless and bare
Your graves upon the grass for all days"

The commander threw the scroll to the ground. "He thinks to taunt us. Well we shall see who the bigger fool is, soon enough."

Unfortunately, I don't like those odds at all given that they are behind walls. Taketoshi's force of 1 Light Cavalry, 3 Hattori Katana Samurai, 11 Hattori Yari Ashigaru and 4 Hattori Bow Ashigaru isn't likely to prevail against the defending force of 4 Light Cavalry, 1 Bow Samurai, 7 Yari Ashigaru, 3 Bow Ashigaru and 1 Samurai Retainers while they are behind walls. A direct assault is not our only option, however! The Stronghold in the province only has enough food for 4 seasons of siege unless they are relieved. Since this is the Miyoshi's last province, there is no real chance of help coming for them. A such, Taketoshi begins the siege of Awa. While that will take us through winter attrition, I'm hoping that the defenders try to sally out, at which point I can turn the tides on them and deplete their forces such that an assault becomes a feasible option...

I'm pretty sure you are a Let's Play robot designed for goodposting, there is no other explanation how you manage to be so awesome in so many threads. Keep rocking on!

The engine does represent asymmetrical warfare quite well, really punishing players and AI alike who can't exert control over their provinces. While it's fairly realistic, the general consensus seems to be that it's not all that much fun, which is why armies were changed to behave the way they were in Rome 2.

Personally, I don't mind it, as there are ways of dealing with it that are quite effective (as evidenced by our Chisato/Yasunaga double strike), but it's not really a valid option for you, as you have so many enemies after Realm Divide that bleeding them dry would cost you more than it would them and just having an army is significantly more cost effective. If anything, I find the fleets far more aggravating than the armies, as they are much harder to stop and cost you *significantly* more when you get blockaded.

I have not forgotten the "How I manage my armies" post, but as the lateness this week will testify, I'm a touch snowed under at the moment. I'm extending the signups for the tournament until the end of the week in the vain hope that RevenantThreshold will turn up to even up the numbers =p

Baron Porkface asked a great question in the Total War Megathread, so I'm crossposting my answer here as well.

In Shalcar's Lp he was able to tell if a province was rich or poor before conquering it, and thus know whether it was worth the admin cost. How did he do that?

Let's imagine that we want to find out how valuable Harima is:

There are a couple of ways we can accomplish this.

If we click the 6th icon underneath the map on the top right of the screen (Looks like a little castle), it brings up a giant list of all the provinces in the game that is split up into your provinces and others. This can then be sorted by clicking the red arrows by whatever criteria you want. In this case, we sort by name and find Harima in the list.

The second way we can do this is to click on the province capital to select it. This will change the title card to the more in depth version, as shown above. If you can't see the province capital to click it, you can always mouse over the farming building (as also displayed above), which will give you a rough idea of the wealth of the province (Since you can see both farm level and fertility, two major factors in province wealth).

Lastly, if you can see the province capital, you can double click on it like any of your own provinces and you will get the province summary screen. While it doesn't have all the information that one of your owned provinces will have, it has more than enough to assess the value of the province (Building wealth added, base town wealth, farming wealth and town growth are all present). This is also great for working out if a province will be rebellious due to religious differences *before* you conquer it!
