I'm aware of buying tiles and using Tradition. It is frustrating, in the early game, when I really want that luxury one tile away and it grabs the bananas in the jungle I can't get to yet via tech. Need that money for settlers not tiles!!

Is it...with the sheep on the hill by the river? Or on the Desert between everything?

No seriously....even after hundred + hours I still don't always drop my first settler right and trust the AI where it tells me to drop future settlers. I am finally getting better at NOT doing that but still :(

Normally, I'd say on the hill for the production bonus and such. In fact I'm still tempted. Yet at the same time, with that perfect ring of 5 floodplain wheat and 1 sheep with a blank spot in the middle it's hard to resist filling up the empty floodplain.

Edit:

You can get a windmill later on though if you don't settle on the hill, and the floodplain is a perfectly fine tile to settle on. Especially with all those growth bonuses.

When I finished researching the necessary tech it added "caravan" (or something similar) as an option for the build queue. When I finished building it a screen came up letting me choose where to send the caravan.

Which got almost instantly destroyed by roaming barbarians.

Unsurprisingly they closed off the instant selling of luxuries and embassies to the AI for easy gold in the early game. They all now require declaration of friendship for lump sum trades. You can do gold per turn without them but everyone makes zero money at the start so that's non-ideal. Kind of a interesting way of addressing that AI loop hole in the early game.

First, it looks like you need to build a caravan unit. It should be an option alongside warriors and such. Then you click on the caravan and a menu with destination cities shows up? I don't have my copy of the game yet. (Preordered a physical copy, waiting for it to be delivered. Last time I ever do that)
