The vast majority of people don't even know there's a difference between jail and prison, let alone federal and state. It's also why so many people have problems comparing this show to Oz. "Down the hill" in this show's terminology would be the more secure wing of the prison, where they also have the SHU apparently. From what we're shown, where Piper is is a minimum security wing of a complex that has a larger campus. I dunno if it's based on a real place, could be. But even so, those details aren't super important to the show. IRQ fucked around with this message at 02:20 on Jul 21, 2013 |

ShakeZula posted:Red's story confused me as well, since her first flashback episode ended with the leaders of the mob pissed at her and storing a body in the freezer, and the second obviously took place after the first (the mobsters knew who she was and she was more comfortable around them), so I suspect the body came and went and she was arrested for something we haven't yet seen. That second flashback seemed to imply that she was actively helping the Mob out with planning and poo poo. I assume she's quite heavily involved with them.

Maybe Taystee too but I can't remember if we got a backstory on her. Most of the others we've seen so far are reasonable. Piper, Alex, Daya, Daya's mom -- drug trafficking Red -- Probably RICO Sophia -- Credit card fraud, usually federal (I think) Claudette -- murder, but maybe with some human trafficking elements that would make it federal Pennsatucky -- domestic terrorism, I guess

I just finished it and really enjoyed it. The end of the season was a pretty epic setup for season 2. There was one thing I must have missed. Why was the one large woman given a helper dog? And why would a helper dog be an untrained puppy?

They managed to get all of that right with the information we are given; armed robbery of a store has been increasingly charged as a federal crime under the Hobbs Act, for example (something which is somewhat contentious in the criminal procedure community).

When Red gets in her face and yells "You aren't being hazed, you aren't being harrassed, you are being starved to death," I thought they were trying to say, "Hey your genteel rich girl ways aren't going to get you out of this one." But then she arts and crafts her way out of it and everyone was just so impressed at how hard she worked. If she was licking rocks for lichen and eating bugs, yeah that's suffering. Having your mouth burned a bit from eating jalapenos is not. I didn't really read it this way; by the time Red made that speech, they had already had their private talk, where Red essentially said "I like you, but I can't show weakness, figure something out". Everything after that talk was somewhat for show. Red just needed a public excuse to start letting Piper eat again, even if it was a lame one like making some lovely lotion.

It's a weird character because he's both comic relief and terrible inmate-raping antagonist. I have been going around my house yelling "COLLEGE KIDS AIN'T poo poo" since watching it, perplexing my roommates.

I just love his swagger and his posture. Hes played as someone who is clearly putting on a theatrical front as if the persona he is projecting will make people respect and fear him, but everyone that meets him will think hes a creepy dickhead and when hes not around they'll just make fun of him. And the tache is just loving perfect.

The prison type matches the crime, things such as murder or gang membership lead to tougher prisons, while something such as the Martha Stewart white collar crime naturally get sent to a lower security prison. Also the escape risk is another big factor used to determine what security level is needed for the prisoner. etalian fucked around with this message at 16:07 on Jul 22, 2013 |

Red is definitely a big softie who gives a lot of tough love. You see this later in the series, even - when she discovers that Tricia was still on drugs, she kicks her out of the "family." After Tricia's suicide, you hear her say that she never meant that she was out forever, she just needed to learn her lesson. That scene, and the scene where she tries to sabotage the kitchen and ends up getting someone badly burned, has me wondering how her character is going to change next season. Maybe we'll start to see her losing confidence in herself and backing down from confrontation more often.

Cythrelo posted:That scene, and the scene where she tries to sabotage the kitchen and ends up getting someone badly burned, has me wondering how her character is going to change next season. Maybe we'll start to see her losing confidence in herself and backing down from confrontation more often. Well, she's lost a lot of power over the season. One of her "daughters" hung herself after she excommunicated her, one of them got burnt the gently caress up BY her, the other silent one essentially told her to gently caress herself after that burning. On top of all that her source of power, controlling the kitchen and the contraband that comes through, is compromised. Her truest friend at this point is probably Nichols, who betrayed her in a fit of anger over the way she treated herself and Tricia. If the second season involves Red trying to reclaim her power, it will probably have to start with her and Nichols. It's clear that despite her claims, that Red is not the only one who can competently run the kitchen. But Neptune probably won't be willing to smuggle in contraband for Gloria and her crew. So at some point If Red can't reclaim the kitchen, she'll have to cut Gloria in on the smuggling so it can continue.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the two guys having that reaffirming mustache conversation. So goddamn funny. I always imagined that's what mustache guys do when they're alone together. Another thing I liked about this show was that it seemed to purposefully set up situations that would play out brutally on a show like Oz. Like the screwdriver going missing, or getting locked in an industrial dryer. But then they turn the screwdriver into a dildo not a weapon, and getting locked in the dryer doesn't mean horrifying burns, it's just a super huge inconvenience for the characters to deal with. I liked that there were never any really huge stakes raised until the final scene of the final episode.
