so far i've got lighting figured out; holy hell it takes a long time to light a sphere though. basically doing the vector math at each point on its surface to figure out the intensity (dot product of the normal vector with the unit vector pointing at the light source)

I know you like creating your own implementation of vectors and dot products and stuff and it's neat doing it once but consider using numpy arrays because it'll be a great skill to have in your sleeve.

numpy is kinda painful at first because the data structures aren't as straightforward to use as the built-ins but hey it's fortran-like numerics calculations speed at your reach :science:

I wrote a buttbot for my native language last year and these days I decided to put it on twitter. I lost count of how many times it got suspended (I guess almost 20).

People seem to like it but I guess there are always 2 or 3 people in a group of hundreds that reports the account as spam.

I'm looking up the stream of recent tweets with the api that are in portuguese and that are not retweets. There are no other criteria, for some reason twitter returns a lot of tweets in spanish and sometimes polish (?). no idea why

my program just runs every 5 minutes or so, grabs stuff from the stream sample api until it succeeds (usually the first tweet is fine, but it'll keep streaming until it is able to process one), then reposts it, then quits and cron starts it up again later

i used to stream 24/7 but it was total overkill for something as low-volume as that

i also used to follow back anyone who followed it and use that to get tweets (using the api equivalent of the home screen), unfortunately it resulted in following like a thousand spam bots, poo poo source material, and me hitting the upper limit of how many accounts you can be following at a time (it's around 1800)

I guess twitter changed the rules since then. with what you said in mind these days I tried manually following people who followed the account and it got suspended again but this time it's not coming back anymore

when we were talking about making this thing in python earlier people said beautifulsoup and I said lxml and my reason is that beautifulsoup is amazingly slow and lxml isn't much harder really

seriously though it's just a fun combinatorial problem to play with (this is the idiot spare time projects thread after all), there's various papers using it to benchmark new techniques in combinatorial optimization. it's very similar to the 8 queens problem but much more elegant to state.
