#1, which is now complete and boring: Build the ultimate computer as of 1999 for video games. I play quake and old dos games on it occasionally, it's fun to have.
#2, which I just started because I'm an idiot: Build a Win2K server using an old laptop to host a dedicated Quake 2 (or others?) server. For some reason Win2K is hella loving up.
#3, shitpost.

What stupid things do you waste boredom time on? I know Jonny has his BBS and somebody is making a Yosvape. Where the gently caress is the yostop anyway.

I tried that with a UFO investigation thing, but it started with IRL school and I forgot it. Does anybody know a good way to learn a language online that isn't horseshit fad crap?
Just to read or write, not the whole cultural experience.

i also write science fiction short stories that will never see the light of day when i get the urge, but it's been a long time since I've gotten said urge

Nothing you ever do will matter, furthermore your happiness/sadness is of no relevance to the universe.
So be happy and enjoy your 80 odd years of life however you want to, be happy you get to have a meaningless 80 years instead of nothing.

here is the thing i forgot to mention, i find it harder and harder to hack on side projects, all of my ideas are insane and too grand in scale to even begin with, and often boil down to "SCREW THIS LEGACY BULLSHIT I'M STARTING FROM SCRATCH". anyway despite this i have managed to have some side projects along the way but most of them i haven't touched in months.

so when #cobol first started everyone was writing bots so i dragged out some perl code I wrote when i was 16 and took flowenol's suggestion "write a bot that says butt", and then played around with it for a week before pushing it to google code. a bunch of people hacked on it, comics got drawn, basically it's the most significant piece of code i've written based on how many people it made giggle.

holy poo poo you made buttbot??
you're a fuckin' hero

I can never focus much on software projects, but I love building dumb computers for dumb purposes (then tearing them down for dumber purposes)
My job in the Canadian Reserves will literally be that so hey cool.

I'm really, incredibly, existentially bored waiting for school to start and my reserves paperwork to get through.
I need ideas on what to do with my time that's useful and cheap.

iirc you need more than about 25 kV to get problem x-rays, which is why that's about where old crts topped out voltage-wise.

please tell me they only figured this out after the first 30 kV CRT debuted.

so i have this plan to build a semiautonomous UAV; the physical airplane part is easy enough but i want to stuff it with the guts of an old phone so i can preprogram it with GPS coordinates that it will fly to

also using the accelerometers in the phone for inertial navigation to supplement the GPS is a thing that would be cool to do

could i just use a rooted android phone? how easy would it be to get it to talk to an arduino or something through the USB port so that it could control the plane?
