hello nerds i posted this a while ago in the piano/keyboard thread but i am not very smart and this is probably the thread i should have posted it in. so here's a copy/paste: I'm trying to figure out if i can fix my old keyboard. I don't have money to buy a new one at the moment, so it would be awesome if I can get this thing working again. In the 90s I got a Yamaha PSR-530 keyboard. I pulled it out of the closet a few days ago and discovered that it does not want to stay powered on any more. I figured out that it is possible, if you connect the DC cord to the keyboard and then wiggle/hold it juuust right, the keyboard will stay on. But if you then let go of the cord (and thus are no longer bending it juuust right) it will go dead. I found the service manual online (and it's actually really cool, with dual JP/EN text, real schematics, etc) and figured out how to take the thing apart. I got it apart and extracted the circuit board that manages the DC-in duties. The board itself says that it is "XT-033", although in the service manual there are some alternate/additional codes used for it. This is what the board looks like on the side with the components, facing as if you had cut away the plastic around it when the keyboard is fully assembled: The big red arrow points to the DC-in port, which on the PCB is labeled "JK101". Also here is the other side of the PCB: The part I've made a sort of dotted-line box around is where the solder points are for the DC-in port. You might see some stuff that looks like it might be liquid on some of the points there, but I dabbed a cotton swab there and nothing came off so it appears to be solid (and similar in color to the other yellow/brown stuff near other solder points on the board). I'm not much of a solderer but the job here looks generally good. the only thing i saw was that there may be a small bit of solder or wire that got broken off here: This corresponds to this little wire on the side of the board with the components, which appears to be connected (directly or indirectly) to the DC-in bit: Is this my problem? Is it not? Should I try and find a replacement board? Any insights or suggestions are appreciated.

Yeah, so if I hold the board with one hand use the other hand to wiggle the plastic rectangle bit with the DC port, that glob of solder definitely moves up and down and detaches from the lower-right corner of what was obviously supposed to be an entire single bit of solder. I haven't soldered anything since my technology class in junior high. How hard is this job? I'm not super confident in my abilities here, mainly because the other big glob of solder to the right of the one in question is so close to it.

Tablo, 2 tuners ($177), external drive for recording (8TB, $160), plays via an app on a Roku ($40) and a yearly subscription for EPG ($50). Also includes remote streaming too. i think it's even possible to build an OTA DVR with a raspberry pi. it wouldn't give you the other benefits, but you'd get Jeopardy recordings. it might be cheaper/simpler too

Sagebrush posted:the green coating on the board is called solder mask and will tend to reject solder, so as long as you don't add a ton of extra so that it spills over onto the next pad you should be fine. those look like relatively large pads and traces so it's not that challenging. Jonny 290 posted:you can probably just reflow that maybe adding a dab of solder and itll be fine for another 10 years. Oh hey look I'm quoting this five months later. Anyway, I think I'm gonna try and actually do this. I don't have any equipment nor do I have any kind of proper ventilation facilities. However I do have eye protection, rated PPE for my mouf, and a garage. If I get a cheap babby soldering kit, will I be good to go? This keyboard is from the 90s and has many "CONTAINS LEAD" warnings all over the inside of it. Also, if I'm going to go the "insulated wire connection" route, what kind of wire and solder should I be looking for? And if I'm going to just try and re-flow it, will I need any extra solder, or will it just involve heating up the existing stuff.

aw no way, the "motion object manager" is your microcode?? that rules i tried learning some homebrew NDS programming years back, and i thought it was pretty neat because the hardware (or firmware?) has dedicated logic for sprite storage and display (iirc this is called the "OAM"). that's what i was remembering

ah yeah, now i'm remembering how n64 worked. nintendo was so paranoid about secrets that they basically shot themselves in the foot when they could have been allowing developers to build up cool graphics microcode. it would have been so cool to see what studios with big $$ in dev money could have come up with for the hardware it's super neat that you, forums poster luigi, are able to mess around with it now

idiot project idea: has anyone ever made a VR version of groverhaus?

# ¿ Nov 13, 2019 23:40 |

AtomD posted:i haven't even heard of this tbh. gonna have a look at it Lilypond was started by some people who sat down one day and looked at the available music engraving programs, and decided that all the existing ones produced ugly sheet music, and that they should build one that output nice looking sheet music. In doing this they invented what is basically a text markup format for notating music, which is the part you might find useful. I know that some other score-writing programs support Lilypond files, but I don't know if any DAWs have like a simple "import from lilypond file" feature. It comes out of the Unix/TeX worlds, so you can probably find something that would convert Lilypond files to MIDI or whatever other format your DAW supports. e: there are also several other music markup languages out there. one of them was even created by the w3c https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Music_notation_file_formats
