Like I have the time. My alarm rings at 6:30, I'm at work from 8 to 16, come home 16:45, feed the kid, play with her for 1,5 hours then put her to bed, then it's almost 20:00 and i've got two hours to unwind until I go to bed.

On weekends it's the same minus the work so I just spend time with the kid and wife and we do something together. Then when she takes a nap I've got two hours to do what I want which is usually watch tv or play videoshame since what the hell vould I start that can be made in two hour slots without really getting into it?

Thank god i had a proper summer vacation so i built a small greenhousecabinet and varnished the terrace and built a flowerbed out of bricks.

Maybe split it into 10 six megabyte files each containing words that start with certain letters like AB, CD, EF, then just read the first letter, pick correct small file and search from there. Bam, cut seek time to a tenth!

See, I don't do this for a living that's why that's probably a bad advice.

so now Galileo's on a different, possibly less accurate, set of frequencies. ooh-rah.

What stops them from using gps to shopt rockits to the us? Will they just toggle "encryption on" and all non-military gps devices just stop working?

okay so my friend claims that she mixed blue and red food colouring, and it turned out green. she asked me why this might be the case

she swears that she did not simply mistake a bottle of yellow food colouring for red, and while i'm p. sure this is still the most probable explanation by far, i will do my due diligence in investigating this mystery of science

the obvious route seems to be: get the transmission spectra of the food colouring dyes, and then get the emission spectrum of the lights she was using (fluorescent i think), and then figure out what sort of colour one would expect to see

so, step 1 is build a spectroscope. my first prototype is just a kludged-together slit->tube->diffraction grating->digital camera, so the spectra i'm getting out of it are pretty rough

here's a spectrum i got from a CFL bulb

i'm going to build a more solid one out of lego that will actually sort of mount to the camera and allow me to precisely control the amount of light getting in and the angle it's at, and then stick it on a tripod or something so that it'll be stable for the relatively long exposures it'll need to do

a lesser man would have bought food colorings and mixed them.

well done.

I made a overly complicated way of watering the plants if we go away this summer.

It works over wifi, I can use the WeMo to turn on the pump that pumps water from the reservoir to a box that channels it via tubes to four plants. It also has a camera to check the temperature and see that water is actually flowing. All this could have been solved with a few bottles and some wool yarn but then I wouldn't have had a chance to build anything.

yes yes I know, php is dumb poo poo for idiots but it's doing a p good job of teaching me coding basics. if the webs page was something more ambitious I'd learn Django or node.js, taht's probs the next step once I get it working on this stack.
