Evil Mastermind posted:e: nevermind. Apparently you can't just stream from your Plex server to your CC. You have to do it through a third device for some reason. This isn't how the chromecast works though. Plex has been pretty buggy for me, and with having a weak NAS I guess I will just use xbmc for now.

If all else fails google has 24/7 tech support for chromecast. Did you not spend 10 seconds googling what this thing can do? Its pretty clear about what apps it offers. kri kri fucked around with this message at 05:55 on Dec 16, 2013 |

zapateria posted:It (mostly) works for playing stuff. You can create a "home movies" section which will let you do this. Its not that elegant though. My trip report from this weekend is essentially its not ready for prime time. Scrubbing through the video doesn't work, it just freezes, and basically none of my files are supported for direct play which means it makes my server die even on SD files. If they could get it working better which I am sure they will, its a really cool concept. Has anyone tried that Avia app or whatever?

It is, I would run it on my desktop but I am not willing to keep that on 24/7. My NAS is underspec for plex, but its been working alright for anything under 1080p. Guess I will stick with xbmc for now until I update my server or something.

Having a weird issue. I have 2 chromecasts in my house, one downstairs called Family room and 1 upstairs called Bedroom. I am seeing 2 chromecasts called "Bedroom" when I try and cast from a handheld device. If I cast from a desktop client 1 only see the 2 chromecasts. I unplugged them both and now I still see 1 "bedroom" chromecast. This happens from my iPhone, iPad, Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 devices, and only with Youtube and Netflix. If I cast from the Plex app I don't see the duplicate device. I have renamed both Chromecasts, no luck. I have factory reset both devices, rebooted my router. I have a Asus RT-N66U with tomato. I did change my router but I can't remember if this issue started then. Any help would be appreciated, I called Google and they didn't know. kri kri fucked around with this message at 22:08 on Jan 11, 2014 |

You can always try out plex, and if you like it get a better plan and they will give you a refund on your cheaper plan. ^ holy poo poo you just reminded me of DIVX. I don't have anything to add, but thats funny.

I agree that it will be at least 4 months out for the free casting version. The good news is if you are not invested heavily into Plex, Mediabrowser3 has beta testing for casting, and it will be open to all users, not paywalled like plex is. Keep in mind the clients are still pay though, like plex. http://mediabrowser3.com/community/index.php?/blog/1/entry-36-media-browser-ready-to-cast-stream-your-local-media-to-chromecast/

TraderStav posted:Ah, I think I understand. I don't use Plex currently so am not familiar with all of the nuances. A quick Google shows that Plexpass is a premium subscription that I am guessing unlocks the ability to stream to a Chromecast? If it replaces my HTPC (and it's occasionally quirkiness) that would be worth it to me. Correct. Personally, I would buy a month of plex and test it out, see if you like it. I have moved my parents and sister over to it, they can use it fine.

lostleaf posted:Anyone with plex pass, can you see if it loads internal or external subtitles on videos? I tried both Avia and bubbleupnp and neither seems to work with subtitles. It does e: to expand on this. Yes, plex can load external subtitles, but if you download subs you need to refresh the tv series / movie to get them to load. I wish it was easier like XBMC with a sub downloader built-in, but thats how it is. This is the weakest thing about plex to me, since if I want a TV subtitle and the plex sub service does not find it, its royal pain in the rear end (relatively) to have them show up in plex. kri kri fucked around with this message at 20:01 on Feb 24, 2014 |

TraderStav posted:Seriously this thing is amazing. My only issue is that when I use plex and try to skip around it never comes back and plays. Even if I do a resume from x:xx on fresh start up. If I play from the start it plays brilliantly without any buffering. Seems like it doesn't want you loving around with it once it fires up which means I have to watch a lot of intros to shows and can't watch a movie over two nights. Try the latest plexpass server version, its much better.

I guess it depends on the providers. I would kill for NBC live extra casting but its nowhere to be found. Plex I have had no issues with, I use it every day. I don't really know what google could do aside from trying to work more deals to get people to put casting into their app. Casting is really their ace in the whole, in my opinion. App doesn't have casting? Cast your laptop tab. kri kri fucked around with this message at 19:56 on Oct 28, 2014 |

IMO if you want a remote I would just get a firetv stick when that drops.
