Can you nest in ESXi? My primary hypervisor is hyper-v (turns out you can put up with a lot of poo poo for unlimited VM rights) but I do want to get in on VMWare learning.

I'd personally get this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16859106267R You'll get a fully featured xenon proc, 2more mb of L3 cache, and you can jam diffrent size DIMMs in and get the same dual-channel speed. Also you can step up to ECC ram. The only thing you don't get is hyper threading. E: its not nearly as sexy as the shuttle, i'll give you that. incoherent fucked around with this message at 09:04 on Sep 28, 2013 |

Quad is a bit overkill for testing machines. Very nice to have but its like 200 bucks for the bare bones one. If you dig hard you might be come up with an older version on the cheap, but it be PCI. Also that card was 76% off. Open box or not incoherent fucked around with this message at 23:19 on Sep 30, 2013 |

Man I need to make sure HA VMs running AdventureWorks DBs and Resilient Exchange instances can withstand my simulations!

GobiasIndustries posted:I'm looking to set up a dedicated PC for RHCSA/MCSA studying; I'd like to run ESXi with CentOS/Windows Server 2008 (or 2012). Is this Lenovo still going to be the best option for the money? I finally pulled the trigger on a setup like this for ESXi. I'm installing on a USB stick to max out my SATA ports for ~things~.

GobiasIndustries posted:I picked up a barebones Lenovo TS440 about a month ago and I'm finally able to put a bit of money into upgrades. Two questions: My homelab is the TS440 and yes, you can use the other 4 gig stick for a total of 20Gb. RE: HDD. Don't use 5400 as a primary vm boot its going to be far too slow. I would recommend 2 240Gig ssd for VM boot images and the 5400 for data (extra drives like exchange, sql, or other services). They don't even have to be "nice" SDD drives, they can be cheap adata ones. Martytoof posted:Does the TS440 have a RAID card? It does not. incoherent fucked around with this message at 19:40 on Apr 5, 2015 |

Yeah, no prob on dropping in additional HDD. Windows-style "next next next" sorta stuff in the GUI. Using my system as an example I have 4 distinct SSDs handling my VMs hanging off the mobo (some, literally) and they're speedy even if their garbage tier. HW RAID is a nice to have, but its not required. FreeNAS on the linux side and windows iscsi target and RAID can do the grunt work for you of simulating storage and network storage with very little config. Very neat stuff.

SamDabbers posted:The Lenovo TS140 seems to be a thread favorite. There's also the HP ML10 v2 at a similar price point, and you can get either of them with a dual core hyperthreaded i3 or a quad core Xeon. Just doubled my ram in mine to 32 gigs. Great little box.

I rock the TS140 w/ 32GB of ECC DDR RAM. The only thing you'll have to do is pick up an approved network adapter or roll some hacked drivers into the iso. I boot from a usb stick so my 4x SSD are all for creating VMs. Recent ESXI updates supports (as in it does work, but not "supported") nesting and they've rolled more features out so simulating hyper-v as if it's bare metal can be done. Should be really easy to stack a ton of VMs for nested domain homelabbing as long as you're ditching the GUI.
