in further celebration of st. crime's eve, here is a lil more info about our favorite bastard.

Navarwndes yl Vyntovkae Draegynovkas

Unknown to any living being, the Lich King is the single most cautious, canny, and above all prepared tyrant in history. His one eye can see all possibilities of the future, and he takes care to plan for every eventuality-- at this rate his invasion might take another year, century, or age, or so we hope. One such eventuality concerned the Black Plane, a thin dimension that lies between our world and the afterworld-- not a malevolent place, but thanks in no small part to the Lich King himself, the negative energy that flows continuously from it has possibly the worst reputation of any magical source. However, on this fateful day, a sentient being appeared, and the Lich Kind wasted no time in kidnapping her, playing the charming host just long enough to study her biology and steal a cube of matter from her chest before she made her escape. Rumor has it she made her way to Cathedral and became a cleric, but this story concerns the jet-black cube that formed the heart of a golem of undead flesh, energy, and all horrible odds and ends.

In time, the being was placed in the Lich King's corps as an officer-in-training-- but it soon became clear that this was far from the useful pawn the Lich King had hoped for. It snuck through the tunnels of Necropolis searching for books, art, culture-- humanity. In time, it found it, naming itself from a thick and nearly impenetrable tome of Elven poetry before making good his escape in a dingy rowboat to the Wild Wood, where against all odds a panther saved a weak and half (full?) dead Nav.

One Unique Thing
Among other things, the only undead to escape Necropolis and servitude.

Backgrounds
Skulduggery: An inherent superiority complex and laboratory-perfected dexterity leaves Nav willing and able to perform any sort of exciting crookery.

Nec-romantic: An inherent fascination with the world at large and underworld-sharpened tongue leaves Nav willing and able to perform any sort of exciting cookery. Er, or that, anything related to fashion, culture and the finer things, that is.

Former Soldier: In the finest army in the world, in fact. He would have been the ideal soldier, if not for disturbing ideas like "talking" or "adventure" or "not being an 'it'".

Precise Slice: A certain life-saving surgery left Nav with a deep appreciation for anything with a blade, despite his four-month childhood with crossbows and command.

Icon Relationships
1pt Positive Prince of Shadows: the thick Elven volume Nav found deep within Necropolis was an ancient and rare positive account of the adventures of the Prince and other tales of the Underworld, at least until the pages crumbled under Nav's constant perusal. If Nav had a bedroom and lamination existed, there'd be at least three posters of the guy.

2pts Negative Lich King: well, duh. Heck to that guy. Nav will hate the Lich King up until the point where he assumes the crown for himself. Oops, did I say that? Just don't look in his little black tactical journal, alright?

1pt Positive Priestess: well, this is interesting. After all these, er, months of selfishness, Nav is starting to understand that maybe sometimes other people wanna be selfish, too, and if he likes those people, maybe he should help. It's early days for kindness, but seeing as it first sparked in the Flame of Sacrifice within Cathedral, the Priestess and co. have taken a bit of interest in this formerly-heartless (he has a panther's now!) abomination.

Nav started out as a ranger-rogue multiclass, as I wanted to play a no-fuss sniper capable of raining down death from the shadows. When multiclassing was removed for being sorta terrible, I shifted into Ranger-- and spent the playtest sessions awfully bored with the limited range of options. Assimilating Agatha after the River Devil fight was a great chance for character and mechanic change; you may have noticed that I enjoy where mechanics meet narrative above all else.

Ever since, I have been building Nav as more or less an assassin, focusing on damage when possible... though Swashbuckle, the rogue ability that allows me to do A Cool Thing once per battle, and Black Cat (curse of chaos), the racial power that allows me to trip up enemies who roll poorly, have been instrumental in keeping me interested in the game with the narrative power they lend.

I dunno. Someone walked in and he was caked in red and purple goop but apparently unharmed and grinning hugely and almost all of Agatha was gone except for the prime steaks and now he refuses to talk about her except in special circumstances or to make a stupid joke. I think this is the first ever Grand Guignol Ghibli mystery story and I wanna keep it that way.

Just listening to the podcast makes Drakkenhall feel like a constantly shifting non-euclidean nightmare. Which honestly I can get behind.

I'm also going to throw my vote in for the version of Drakkenhall that has the Blue just hunkered down in a cramped office sitting behind a desk doing menial paperwork.

It's such a cool location, honestly I wouldn't mind hearing other weird versions of the Blue City that occurred in other people's games.

Mine is basically dantes hell - seven circles of highly stratified society descending into the earth. Each circle is dominated by a particular species - first goblins, then orcs, ogres, giants, lizard men, then winged dragonborn forming a magical cabal. Finally the blue sits in a palace of magical ice (the encounter to go have a chat with it was based on seath the scaleless from dark souls).

So far we've had one session getting in to drakkenhall to talk to the blue about the magic binding the seven great chains that hold axis above an active volcano (which is weakening because the high Druid has secretly been sabotaging the chains ) which mainly involved my group's favourite thing - accidentally killing guards while trying to be stealthy and using the backgrounds 'ex undertaker' and 'depressing poet' to fake their suicides.

After the chat they got out sharpish.

They'll be heading back as there's an incipient goblin/orc/ogre rebellion brewing against the more reptile inhabitants. A war between circles is coming. Will they side with truth, justice and the imperial way, or will the offer of help in their quest sway them to the side of the dragons?

Pyradox
Oct 23, 2012

...some kind of monster, I think.

Mine is a series of flooded ruins surrounding a central noble district that stands as beautiful and regal as the day it was constructed.

The waterways and canals that span the lower city are traveled by boat, like a crumbling Venice, not so much inhabited as occupied by the residents. The area is full of roving bands of monsters, all intelligent and organized into gangs and tribes who have divided up the ruins uneasily. The Blue keeps it from turning into all out war, but the rooftop-streets are dangerous without an experienced ranger guide, so most travellers stick to the waterways. The civilian population are a canny folk, who have learned many secret passageways through the ruins, and with the help of thieves' guilds and the local Imperial garrison, stay one step ahead of the mobs, moving in convoys from one stronghold to the next.

Though perilous, the city is highly cosmopolitan, and the locals are extremely accepting to all walks of life, so long as they mean no harm. In the slums of Drakkenhall, there are worse things to fear than the intentions of strangers. That being said, the local mobs have their own veneer of civilization - casinos, black markets, dens of sin and inequity are all over the place, keeping tourists safe for a price, and ensuring that the slums get vital trade with the other cities. Of course, nobody does business in the Blue's city without giving her a cut.

The noble district is an altogether more pleasant environment, though the monsters there are said to simply be much better at not looking the part. The eyes of the Blue are watchful close to home, and she collects aristocrats and diplomats like so many treasures, guarding them jealously, while delighting as the more valuable ones attempt to prove their worth to her. Shows of betrayal and grand political gestures are par for the course, as the nobles fight for her favour, knowing that no matter their rung on the social ladder, the Blue rewards her friends handsomely. Occasionally hopefuls from the lower city reach the noble district, looking to make their fortune, and though some have succeeded, the nobles are very jealous of any who may threaten their own chances.

Of course, no matter where you go in the city, you are as likely to see a human or an elf as a kobold or a naga. The Empire takes a dim view of the less "civilized" species, but so long as they don't cross the Blue, everyone is treated equally in Drakkenhall. For better or for worse.

I really love the whole concept of Drakkenhall, so I had a lot of fun designing this version.

Well played, Goonsire!
WolfShirt asking about Drakkenhall made me think about LPDND's adventures in Leng and now I'm dreaming up a labyrinth-styled Drakkenhall. It's kind of making me want a 13th age version of the Jim Henson Labyrinth movie, only with the Blue instead of David Bowie. " You've fought your way to the center of the labyrinth and the Blue peers down at you with her ponderous, timeless eyes, takes in a deep, rumbling breath and greets you in a voice like falling mountains: You remind me of the babe."

Well in other campaign settings Dragonborn are usually a foot taller than the average human, so even without the hat she is a pretty tall woman. To be fair, like half the party are Wood Elves and Smoulderboulders, and the closest thing to a "normal" human in the group is Nav. If you want to compare her to a monster, Scarlett is about as tall as a gnoll that isn't standing straight up (which none do, they have dreadful posture).

Fun Fact: Her brother Algernon is considered really short by dragonborn standards, but that still puts him around the size of a large human!

Human mundanes just don't understand...

In seriousnes, it's just how the word works as far as I know. If it's spelled with one T it's referring to the color, and if it has two T's it's probably a person's name. (Scarlett O'Hara, Scarlett Johansoon, etc)

Fun Fact: My character's skin isn't actually the color scarlet, it's sigificantly brighter. One of her parents probably mistook it for that and named her after it, though.
