Anyone have experience with planars? Got the 58x and I'm loving them but km super curious about how the 4XX on mass drop sound in comparison. Would the built in amp in a mobo be enough to drive them if they're already fine with the 58x. Mine is reportedly capable of up to 60p ohms

If you value clarity and minimal distortion they're fantastic, the trade-offs tend to be less pronounced bass (which is still clearer imo and leads to a shorter, punchier sound) and really, really bad sound leakage. Everything sounds a lot crisper and nuanced, of course, in the high end there are dynamic driver headphones like the Focal Clears that easily rival planars but I prefer planars in the more lower-midrange just because of the clarity. The bass thing is entirely more preference on thudding versus punching. There's also something more immersive and enveloping about them, could just be how enormous the drivers tend to be but planars are amazing even with videogames and movies due to that quality.

Straight up do not buy planars if sound leaking and outside noise is a huge consideration for you. My LCD-Xs practically sound like small tinny speakers to other people in the room even with moderate volume.

Your PC will be able to drive them fine, there's just the typical noise considerations but if that doesn't bother you at the moment then it shouldn't be an issue.

They sound great and will only be for home use so it'll be fine for my use case. I'll consider getting them in the near future if they're still in production by then. Appreciate the advice

I'm between the fostex trmkIII line and the he4xx. Both seem nice for the price. Is there any good site for keeping track of headphone deals?

When I did my search the T20RPs came up on my list of options but just about every review said you at least need to switch the ear pads to make them serviceable on top of needing a pretty decent amp. The HE4XX just seemed like a good starting place out of the box for someone new to headphones like me.
r/headphones will post deals when they come up but its not often. Headphones on Massdrop never go on sale so if you want one, get it. You can also check out r/avexchange if you don't mind used.

Just got my HE4XX delivered this morning and have been listening to them all day while working and its well worth the price. Between these and my HD58X, I think I'm ok on headphones until I'm ready to make the jump to the HD660S or LCD2C. Now I'm waiting for my Modi 3 to arrive to call it a day on my DAC/Amp setup too.

Sweet. I'll probably get the HE-4XX in the upcoming months. Want a back up pair to compliment my own 58X. Would like an aggregate for headphone deals since I didn't see the monoprice deal mentioned on any of the usual places I frequent.

Does anyone have any experience with this dac? https://www.amazon.com/Fosi-Audio-Converter-Headphone-Pre-Amplifier/dp/B07G2NQYLX it looks good for the price.

Awesome thanks. So the fossi wouldn't be ideal for driving my 58X? Guessing the dac built in is of lesser quality as well?
EDIT:fossi or the other combo unit mentioned seem ideal for me since I'm not looking to drive anything too crazy. Just an amp for my 58X and something to connect my ps3 headphones to. Will likely get some budget powered speakers in the future for when people come over but I mostly intend to stick with my cans.

I've got the Custom One Pro and the 400i, which according to the internet are basically the same as the dt770 and 4XX. What is your primary pair and what are you looking for out of your secondary pair?

They're very different headphones, especially with one being open backed and the other closed.

Deeper bass and wider sound stage than my 58X and a different sound signature mostly. I'm leaning more towards the 4XX since i'm interested in planar but all the hifiman qc horror stories have me nervous.

Well you're a bit at odds there. The Custom One / DT770 trounces the 400i/4XX in the base department, but being a closed back can't compete with regards to sound stage. Note though that I've only listened to either through onboard audio ports, I've got an Atom coming tomorrow, so I should have a better grasp on its bass capabilities, but as is I'd call the 400i's (sub)bass response lacking, at least for bass heavy tracks (it wouldn't be my first choice to listen to Jai Paul with, for instance). OTOH the closed back of the Beyerdynamics makes it so you're always aware that the music is coming from a few inches from your ear.

FWTW the Custom Ones are my work headphones and the 400i's are at home, so I've never directly compared the two, and I haven't had much time to do any serious/critical listening to either, so I don't have any specific points to call out on either, though I can take the time if there's some facet you're really interested in. I haven't heard the 58X either, so I'm not sure how the sound signature compares.

I wouldn't be too concerned about the quality control, I've had the 400i for a year now and haven't had any issues, though the build quality is definitely not where I'd like a $150 purchase to be, they do feel cheap. The 4XX has the earcups attached with metal rather than plastic so it should be better in that regard.

e: If you do go with the DT770s, it appears Beyerdynamic themselves (or their USA distributor subsidiary) sells refurbs on ebay at a significant discount. The website attached to the ebay store is dead, but it and the shipped from location match the Beyerdynamic USA Inc. entitiy listed on Beyerdyamic's dealer finder. Its where I got my Custom Ones which came in brand-new packaging (complete with all the little inserts) and maybe some scuffs on the earcups. I'd check the individual listings if you go that route, some say headphone only. https://www.ebay.com/usr/bd-usa

Appreciate the advice. Didn't know about the refurbished models. Really like them for that price so I may just end up getting the 4XX and 770 later down the line. Would anyone have any on hand experience with the differences between the 770, 880 and 990.

The dekoni blue fostex are super comfy. They don't clamp to the side of my head as badly as the 58x which is a godsend since I have a fat head. Sound fine too but I won't be able to drive them as well as I should until the back ordered atom amp ships.
Edit- I'm honestly surprised by how well my onboard sound is driving them. have to max out the volume but what I'm getting is mostly listenable and clear. I don't have any experience with amp so I dunno how big the sound difference will be when these headphones get more power but I'm def excited.

Thanks. The tone board seems nice but I'm in need of something with an optical input. Getting the atom amp for now and will likely acquire the D30 down the line when I have money to spare.

I do wish JDS would come out with a newer DAC (with USB/optical in) to be competitive with the tone board / D30 / etc. and a nicer cosmetic match for the Atom.

Nice. Topping is def my top choice for the time being. Though I'm pretty content with my mobo's DAC. Need the amp for now since the onboard amp doesn't give my new fostex enough juice and also because the atom lets me switch between RCA and 3.5 which is awesome for my PC and PS3 set up.

Is this thread a place I can ask about headsets? I am finally getting back to some gaming after my kids were born and I am starting to have time again, so recently built a new machine, and one of the last things I need is a gaming headset.

As far as I can tell from checking stuff out in person, everything marketed as a gaming headset seems to be junk. I tried out about half a dozen sets at my local best buy, at best the sound was maybe OK. They were pretty much universally big, clunky, heavy and not that comfortable. While I need a mic, that is going to be a minority of my use time, so I may just end up getting some decent headphones and separate mic, but I figured I would at least ask around and see if there are any recommended solutions.

I don't have a hard budget but if I was going to spend 200+ It would have to be for something that was really great. FWIW I have a pair of Grados I use, and I think they sound fantastic, but they are not at all comfortable for long use sessions and comfort would be pretty high on my list of needs.
