Is there a way to see if I had a special birth message in ADOM after the fact? I haven't played since the first of the new updates so I started up a ratling duelist. So far I've had 2 floors with herbs, 2 co-aligned altars, a surge a power, and some weird named goblin thing that is definitely new to the updated versions. It feels very much like a long lost brother game. Too bad the SMC made me get pinned between a rat and a giant rat giving me an abysmal first kill if I wanted to try an ultra.

Looking at the numbers I want to say yes. Unless some pretty amazing new reliable weapons got added that I don't know about. That seems like it'd either end up as a Super Mario World hack or a Super Mario RPG hack. Someone could make that without going those routes but unless they had some brilliant way to distinguish their work from both styles while still being Mario and had someone willing to art for free or something it would just be (theoretically) saner to try hacking the existing ROMs into a roguelike form than invent something from whole cloth that wound up playing the same way as either. Otherwise there'd be the very legit complaint that there's no reason to just play that when it's less fun than the ROMs in question.

I'm imagining an ascii grid with some sort of jumping mechanics like the CastlevaniaRL I remember being made for a 7DRL challenge.

If you want to go loose with the definition of a roguelike (the nuances of which surely have never been discussed here before), I remember somebody made a Mario 1 hack that randomized what enemies spawned, the palette used, and what level you go to after completing a level that was kind of fun to play with actually. (And for the curious if you rolled 8-4 and beat it it would just send you to another level)

It is the worst bottleneck when you're going for an ultra ending. I now get to make zero progress as I pick pocket gremlins or scum the infinite dungeon. Or risk robbing Blup's mom...

I've honestly never really found it very grindy unless going for an ultra ending. There's grindy things you can do to make things easier like herbs, precrownings, gremlin bombing, but a regular playthrough can pretty much go from one quest to the next.

The only bottleneck to me is the Tower of Eternal Flames (and the Dwarven Mystic gives you a ring of ice if you're neutral now).

With this ultra game I have going now that AoLS is the only roadblock. After that it's basically a clean sweep of temples and whatever ultra related quests are relevant.

But I'm probably just weird because I haven't ever gotten into any traditional roguelike that wasn't adom.

Well for the first time in a few years now I managed to get somewhere in an ultra ending adom game. Got the medal of chaos, had 4 of the 5 elemental orbs. And then hit a mixed tension room on D46 with a doppleganger king who confused and triple punched through my armor and killed me instantly. Whoops.

100% my fault though, I saw him and for some reason thought "I'll just use this wand of fireballs to kill him" instead of immediately teleporting away. I got cocky and paid for it.

ADOM's command list is completely ridiculous. The one that sticks out in my memory is picking up items "in a comfortable way" or "primitively"... I don't think I ever used them so I don't know what they do. It just sounded so pointless. In games like that the list of commands wouldn't be an issue if the game actually had a decent UI and presented your options a bit better. If you have a clear idea of what you can do it can go a long way towards making a game less obtuse and might put more creative approaches to problems at the forefront of the player's mind. Like maybe putting beeswax in my ears isn't so ridiculous and might actually occur naturally to the player if your inventory is laid out better or you can see what commands you can apply to a given item in your possession.

I can't remember if ADOM has a hint system like NetHack's oracle, but that certainly helped me survive some of the crazier stuff in that game.

Actually isn't there an old lunatic or a druid or barbarian that talks to you about stuff?

The pickups are just ";" which when standing on a pile of loot will say "Do you want to pick up the dagger? Y. Do you want to pick up the orc corpse? N. etc...", "," which on a pile will bring up a list of all the loot in an inventory style screen and let you hit C to pick up the 250 gold pieces, and I think control+; or comma to bring up the inventory style one, but you can mark the items and pick them up up together. I always just use ; and , for grabbing stuff.

I do remember seeing the Face/Ears commands when I was first learning the game, and wandering around blindly from mud until I died waiting for it go away on its own. (And yes you get +1 appearance from the mud bath!)

ADOM is still very old fashioned and I'd have much less patience for it if I began playing it for the first time today than a decade ago when the idea of a roguelike was brand new to me (until I realized I was playing ascii Castle of the Winds with permadeath).

I don't think any old bug will ever beat the Khelly crash though.

Edit: What really surprises me about the new releases is that missile are still absurdly good. If you get the right kind of slaying ammo you can kill any of the orb guadians in probably 4 attacks tops. My first win was a paladin and every fight other than the water temple was me meleeing and drinking an absurd amount of potions of extra healing

In ADOM at two points later in the game you need to know what the first monster you killed was. So I made a habit out of renaming my characters to anagrams of their first kill.

I can't imagine not playing it with a little notepad open for things like that.

But the best first kill if you're going for an ultra is a bandit because they're wilderness encounters that aren't too common anywhere else. The last game I played that died on the way to the mana temple only had like 24 bandit kills. Treat them like cats but don't worry about having to kill one.

Edit: Hypothetical - Make it so Khelly's wounds are not fatal if you make it to him within X days of game time, and if that time passes, then require the amulet. There, now it's skill based but offers an escape via luck.

I have only ever dared deliberately use them in wilderness encounters where I know I'm safe.

The fourth in the series, Super Pokemon Mystery Dungeon came out today. The previous games have been really bland in terms of gameplay while having awesome music and surprisingly good plots for a pokemon spinoff game for kids.

This one actually adds some semblance of depth though! They added "Looplets and Emeras", basically bracelets and things you slot into them to give you new abilities like seeing items on the minimap, extra damage, chance of inflicted status effects with every move. Then at the end of the dungeon the Emeras go away so each run has you slotting different things. You can also instead of slotting them, use them for a boost to a specific stat for the rest of the dungeon dive.

They also added team attacks as well which seem like a good way to pile on damage.

The game also seems more difficult than the previous ones, but that might be because I picked Chespin and these early dungeons seem to have a lot of bug, flying, and fire types.

Basically I'm actually enjoying the non-story elements so if you got any enjoyment out of the previous games so far I'd recommend the latest.

You can pick your starsign now. Which after wanting to be able to do so for years, now just paralyzes me with "do I want to play this class or that class" now that I won't get something that's clearly good for wizards and just pick wizard.

If you haven't played since the pre-kickstarter days, it fixes all the horrible bugs, has a lot of reward tweaks, adds Ratling and Mist Elf races and Chaos Knight and Duelist classes. All the ways to cheese the game hard were removed. (Can't transform 10 rings of stunning into 10 rings of djinni summoning, can't sacrifice 200 stomafillas for an easy precrowning, that sort of thing.) Lots of quest reward rebalancing, a new Ice Queen's Domain area, a few extra generic random dungeons scattered across the world map. (Which help immensely for preventing that mid game fatigue where you can run out of places to go before giving up on saving Khelly or getting fire immunity for the tower.)

Also tiles.
