And there's always the questionable maxocheaps from walmart that's rated to 7a but degrade over time when everyone kicks at, trips over, slams desk into, and runs the chair over the power strips... It's a bloody loving nightmare and an electrical fire waiting to happen.

Not an office. THE office. Operations had shutdown for today so that we may relocate and everyone else is working from home as I setup the infrastructure with a team of 4 both today and on thursday. I've been working on both the logistical and the technical... and took the opportunity to untangle the hopelessly snarled rack as well as start testing terminations to make sure that the cable plant is up to snuff. Hopefully in office ops will resume on the 3rd.

It would be nice to start over from scratch, with a "Make it loving work" budget... but I'd like something more of an actual plan to implement it, not double Secret Severity One on the Aoi-Chan index of incident response.

Meanwhile, regarding my above post: It Gets Better.

Basically they fired someone with cause and this person turned around and ratted them out to the BSA.

They're facing an audit, and they thought if they "got me back in" as the IT guy then I "would have to take responsibility" for the noncompliance. And fix it. With zero budget.

The missing drives from the fileserver got moved to the DC, where they are suspiciously empty. Not formatted. Zeroed.

Which DC, by the way, nephew was apparently using as his own ... personal.. workstation. And told them that Linux doesn't need updates and can live in the DMZ.

Please tell me you you left rolling middle fingers out the door, cause although don't burn any bridges is a motto to live by, this seems to call for salting the earth.

Should be recoverable. As soon as she removes the second caddy, the drive will disappear from the OS and the server will crash. Then you switch the server off, plug them back in and start it again. It might need to do some consistency checking but with modern controllers you don't even need to exactly remember in which slot the drive was plugged in. That is as long as she didn't mix up the drives between servers, if she did that it's going to be fun.

The problem is, we're located on the eastern seaboard, our client is located in the exact center of the country. Yeah. There was only one server so it wasn't too hard to figure out where everything went and unfortunately the server was unable to handle having its drives pulled and would not boot. We wound up restoring from the day befores backup and calling it a day. This actually happened a while back, but I just got reminded of it recently and had to share.
