I read the old thread and I'm glad to see Midelne is finally in greener pastures -- otherwise I think we would have heard him complaining.

I actually sort of viewed it differently. To me his story was almost a Shakespearean tragedy. He starts off with a terrible boss and his final post and the last thing we heard from him was how it appears his new boss is now better.

16PB is a bit on the large side. The largest I've ever done is 2PB for a casino, and even that was a huge job. The issue is more about the throughput than the retention, though - all of these cameras are at different locations, and need to be centrally stored. Who do you talk about to get a 50gbps WAN connection, anyways?

Probably be cheaper at that point to store the video at the edge and have a courier sneakernet the weekly data to a central archive

A ticket came in.. HR has purchased a half-dozen TV's to display 'Company News' to put in the break rooms. Now they want to know how they get the news from their PC to the TV. Maybe they should have thought about that earlier in the process, but HR.

So, I'm thinking quick and cheap is a bunch of Chromecasts, have one PC with multiple Chrome windows and voila! But this is a little outside my area of expertise. Is that a good way to do it, are there things I could make them buy that would work better? Anyone else doing something similar?

If you don't want to go about putting your own solution together with raspberry pi or whatever, what you are asking about is digital signage. There is an entire sub market dedicated to it. For something as simple as you are talking about I would look at viewsonic's offerings. There are on the lower end of the price curve but will give you what you need

We got a strange one last week. One of our offices that does a particularly large amount of paper work sent in a ticket claiming the copier was taking a long time to produce copies. To a man we all laughed and talked about how stupid they were. I have literally never heard of something like that in my 16 years of IT. Til low and behold we look at it and sure enough its taking a long dang time to copy. 4 minutes by our timing for 3 sheets. Friggin weird. Anyone ever seen a copier start to slow down copying as it gets old?

You guys really should learn some advanced Excel. I am a storage admin but I have years of experience with Excel and every time one of the other team leads needs some Excel help they come to me and I look like a rock star.
