I don't know if Saints Row is rubbing off on Daniel Dae Kim's other projects or if he just has that effect on everything he touches.

Red Faction didn't get good until the third game in the series and Saints Row didn't get good until the second game, hopefully they don't bankrupt this publisher before the actual good installation can come out 5-7 years from now.

Yeah. I know that Volition loves self-referencing like putting Ultor in Red Faction and stuff, but having M.A.Y.H.E.M. headquarters rock the giant purple fer de lis is just gonna cause serious brand confusion. Is this implied to be the empire that the Saints founded? If so, why does Korea exist? Did they do the time-colonists thing, or did Gat just demand that they terraform a Korea onto the new homeworld?

And if they are unrelated, then what the hell? It strikes me like Volition is incredibly unconfident about their new IP, and wants to try and rile up Saints Row fans to buy it out of obligation.

Yeah, it being part of "the Saints Row universe" when it looks nothing like it, has none of the characters, and is a completely different genre just screams of a dev or publisher piggybacking off of a successful existing IP for marketing purposes. The Ultor and Saints Row logos are like the gaming equivalent of the 5 second pickup shot of a street sign in 10 Cloverfield Lane that let them take a completely unrelated thriller movie and make it part of the Cloverfield universe.

So was using Ultor in the Saints Row games piggybacking off of Red Faction then? I'm confused.

It would be if they announced that Saints Row 2 was a part of the Red Faction universe before they ever showed any gameplay of it.

There's definitely others too, this is just what I remember. Knowing THQ and their ideas on what Saints Row should have been, they were probably also responsible for Zimos, and Sasha Grey's presence as a voice actor. I'm pretty okay with Sasha, but I think you'll struggle to find anyone who thinks Zimos was a good and well-realized idea.

The way that Zimos originally came about was that they had planned to have an autotuned gimmick voice akin to the zombie and Nolan North in 4, and the gimmick was rolled off into its own character.

MAYHEM seems like a neat idea but it reminds me of Borderlands (which I don't like) and it already looks like not much has any weight to it.

It reminds me of Borderlands in the way that it draws attention to everything remotely resembling a joke while also being completely unfunny. Like when they introduce the sailor dude they pause the action to literally spell out half a dozen different non-jokes like his wacky name and "tactical eyepatch".

There's a business in the first two games that offers a zombification service that you can call up to get zombie versions of dead homies. Magic's always been real in Saints Row.

Magic is real in GTA too, in Vice City Miss Cleo uses voodoo to make Tommy do missions for the hatian gang.

The Boss in SR1/2 was a badass. 3 and 4 were such radical departures that they may as well have been spin offs. 1+2 for life. (4 is pretty good too, but I really hate 3. )

After THQ went down the SR devs were pretty open about how troubled SR3's development was and how THQ was leaning on them to make a mega-hit that would save them, I'm pretty sure that's why they leaned so hard into the colorful wackiness over SR2's darkness and why they completely excised illegal drugs from SR3 after they were such a big part of 2.

That said I really enjoyed SR3 at release and have played through it several times since then and still enjoy it.

Huh, I wasn't sure about going back to that one after playing the beginning, so thanks for letting me know it's not worthwhile.

Even if you don't mind the RTS thing the game is basically unfinished, there are whole story events that happen offscreen and the second continent is barren compared to the first and it just kind of ends.

The guys who made Sleeping Dogs are also making yet another colorful over-the-top Hero Shooter as well, it's like everybody who made good open-world games last gen all hired the same consulting firm at the same time or something.

That was THQ mandate I think. Kinda weird. In fairness, Sasha Grey has been retired and acting in normalish things since around SR3, but... yeah.

The idea of putting porn stars in games to be edgy and titillating in the name of moving copies was already a generation past fresh at that point anyways. And even then Backyard Wrestling and BMX XXX were hardly runaway smash hits that everyone was scrambling to emulate.

One quirk of SR3's vehicle damage was that whenever the Boss got in a vehicle it would jack up the health and durability but that effect remained even after you left it. So while it was fun to be almost unkillable in a tank or to have your car be crushed you oblivion and still driving, it also meant that trying to blow up a car you had driven because a bad guy was using it or because its in the way or just because it's fun then it's gonna shrug off almost anything you throw at it for a while.

I just learned about Crackdown 3's building destruction and it's kind of amazing to me in that Volition started Saints Row by copying GTA and now one of the former GTA directors is copying what Volition did with RF: Guerilla. Time is a flat circle, etc.

Also, Crackdown 3's building destruction is only for PVP multiplayer matches in smaller areas. The actual single-player campaign and co-op mode don't have that cloud building destruction tech.

Yeah, I remember when they first announced the Xbone one of the selling points/justifications for the original always-online plan was that it would be able to offload computing power onto the cloud and now a half decade later when they're actually implementing it they're doing it in the worst way possible: multiplayer only in a traditionally single-player game that is locked behind a dead console and a proprietary operating system storefront nobody uses.

AoM spoilers: You're half right. It's revealed that the boss was split into three: their id, ego, and superego. Their id was reconstituted into the villain of AoM, Doctor Babylon, who just wants destruction, and their superego into Perephone Brimstone. At the end, the Mayhem crew sets out to find the Boss' ego and reform them into the true Boss.

I wonder if this was always their plan or if its something they did after Agents of Mayhem's reveal was greeted with so much indifference/wondering why it wasn't a Saints Row game as a way of trying to salvage things.

Literally the only thing anybody remembers fondly about Summoner is the machinima they made for that old Channel 101 D&D sketch, so if they made another one they should just cut out the middle man and have Dan Harmon write it.

Combine all 3 of those systems with Metal Gear Solid 5's stealth and a heaping spoonful of Johnny Gat and marvel at the most awesome game ever conceived by man

Those are all proprietary technologies that belong to competing companies so good luck. Maybe of we're lucky they didn't pull a Nintendo and patent the concept of them so nobody else can even attempt it a la Eternal Darkness's insanity effects.
