I think the first run of docs in the 30 series were passion driven and they also reached out to some very accomplished filmmakers.

They’ve now become by and larger perfunctory sports documentaries. I don’t think there’s one simple mandate that could fix things but for me, I either like exhaustively detailed docs (like Hillsborough) 94 fun docs like The U. There’s room for everything too. June 17, 1994 played with the form a bit and I loved it.

There’s so much room for interesting takes but they’ve really kind of fallen into form for your typical talking head doc. And if that’s the case, don’t bore me with overlong poo poo. Both the Lance one and the Home run chase were way too long.

Pretty much correct about the history of it. 30 for 30 began just as a series of documentaries for ESPN’s 30th anniversary covering events during those years. The early ones were clearly a bit more passion projects by the people behind them with some of the subjects.

They proved to be so successful they continued to do more under the 30 for 30 banner. This wasn’t a bad thing, as to name a few that stood out to me, You Don’t Know Bo, Elway to Marino, and The U Part 2 came from the second run, while Four Falls of Buffalo and the okay XFL one came from the third, plus the whole O.J.: Made in America by itself. But, there’s a pretty solid case for an overall drop in quality as they going, and at this point 30 for 30 might as well be the generic name for ESPN documentaries, so I can’t think of the last time they did one of note under any other.

I would really love a documentary about Nike’s partnership with Weiden+Kennedy. They’ve literally defined athletes images and really outside of a handful of individual plays in games are some of the most defining images of players from my youth. Like Deion Sanders highstepping into the end zone is match with Dennis Hopper screaming about Deion’s shoe as the paranoid ref.

Yeah, the book is great. Probably the oddest part is where the La Vie Claire DS comes off as some kind of villain in the documentary but is a much more interesting character in the book. Not sure if it was intended.

It was worth it to see the old footage and the in-person interviews of Hinault and Andy Hampsten, though. That run of TDFs just prior to EPO exploding was incredible, though. 1987 isn't as famous as '86 or '89 (outside of Ireland), but it's probably my pick for the most exciting Tour ever.

World Cup broadcast schedule's going to be brutal for anyone watching in the states

https://twitter.com/FIFAWorldCup/st...373744363315201

AA posted:

The group stage matches will start at 13:00, 16:00, 19:00, and 22:00 local time, while the Round of 16 and quarterfinals begin at 18:00 and 22:00 local. The semis start at 22:00, and both the third place game and final begin at 18:00. None of that seems too crazy, until you take the time change into account.

Qatar is eight hours ahead of the east coast of the United States, and 11 hours ahead of the west coast. Those 13:00 kickoffs will air at 5 AM in New York, and 2 AM in Los Angeles. The 16:00 kickoffs will air at 8 AM in Philadelphia, and 5 AM in Seattle. The 18:00 kickoffs will air at 10 AM in Miami and 7 AM in San Francisco, while the 19:00 kickoffs begin at 11 AM on the east coast and 8 AM on the west coast. Finally, we have the 22:00 kickoffs, which will start at 2 PM in Atlanta and 11 AM in Las Vegas.

...

And with the tournament now taking place in November and December, rather than June and July, Fox Sports will have potential broadcast conflicts with its cash cow, the NFL (and college football to a lesser extent, at least for one Saturday). The 2022 World Cup will take place over four Sundays, but thankfully, one of those is a rest day. On the first Sunday of the tournament, the two latest kickoffs are a 11 AM and 2 PM on the east coast – right in the heart of Fox’s NFL Sunday coverage. They’ll likely be shunted off to FS1. The second Sunday of the tournament features a pair of Round of 16 games, kicking off at 10 AM and 2 PM, respectively. They’ll probably also be bumped to FS1.

But after the rest Sunday, we get to the final Sunday of the tournament which is….the World Cup Final, beginning at 10 AM on the east coast. There is absolutely no way that Fox can realistically air the *World Cup Final* on cable and not be castigated across the board. If Fox airs the game on broadcast, it’ll definitely eat up Fox NFL Kickoff, and if the game runs into added extra time, it could start eating into Fox NFL Sunday. That would generate some complaints from football fans, but those complaints would pale in comparison to the scorn Fox would receive in moving the Final to FS1.

They'll probably feel less conflicted about it when the USMNT doesn't qualify but hoo boy
