Lots of Nats fans over the age of 50 love Ray Knight and will be sad to see him go but I have never understood the appeal. Sounds like the right choice if he's going around getting into fights with coworkers.

I missed this when it happened, but my dad actively hated Ray Knight and pretty much refused to watch post game coverage because of it. Honestly a lot of those old player announcer/commentators seem pretty interchangeable if you don't know their playing careers at all. I think it would really benefit baseball broadcasts generally to go younger, more diverse, and less male.

Two thoughts:

1. Wilbon's transformation into an old man yelling at clouds is complete and has been for a long time. This is some bottom tier hot-takery.
2. The trend of Mets fans seeking out dissenting CY votes to be bothered by is strange to me. deGrom won! Fairly, deservedly and overwhelmingly! Who cares what a San Diegan septuagenerian and a cranky old man from Chicago think about pitcher wins.

When I started watching Tony was the weirdo who kept getting in trouble for saying stupid poo poo on air, and the grumpy old man.

But he was honest about it and at peace with it.

Somehow he's become the cool one who dresses up as gritty on air and is somehow not a complete hot take fraudster.

A few months ago, and probably so they could shift FS1's daily schedule around. Now there's Lock It In, a show that, as I've mentioned before, is a cool concept for a competition.

I got enough of Cowherd from the commercials that play during the audio of Lakers games over the years before he left ESPN, but the Fox 1 commercials where everyone looks at him like a mad man while he says his bad takes in real life situations is good, if his show was people just staring at him like "look at this guy" I actually would watch it but unfortunately I know plenty of people take his takes as gospel.

Tony has always been fine making himself looks ridiculous and laughing at himself, he's just a giant baby anytime anyone else is remotely critical of him.

NBA ratings are taking a beating out of the gate

Sports Business Journal posted:

NBA viewership is down 26% on TNT and 6% on ESPN one month into the season. Much of the sharp decline can be attributed to LeBron James’ move to the Western Conference, which has hit viewership for the early-window primetime NBA telecasts particularly hard so far. TNT is averaging 1.79 million viewers after 12 game telecasts, the net’s slowest start to a season in at least a decade.

…For TNT’s early windows this season to date, the net is averaging 1.61 million viewers compared to 2.75 million viewers at the same point last season (zero James games this year vs. two in ’17). But the late windows, which feature more prominent Western Conference teams, are seeing a less-pronounced drop, with two Lakers games to date. Meanwhile, ESPN is down 6% overall after 18 telecasts, averaging 1.69 million viewers compared to 1.79 million. But the net is up compared to the same time frame two years ago (1.61 million viewers for 14 games) … Similar to TNT, ESPN’s early window is seeing a drop (-16%), as there were three Cavaliers/James games at this point last year compared to zero Lakers/James games in the early window so far this season

Awful Announcing posted:

Add in that the second- and third-place teams in the standings right now, the Milwaukee Bucks and the Indiana Pacers, play in the U.S.’ 36th- and 28th-largest media markets respectively, and you have a recipe for some declines. Also, the first- and third-largest media markets, New York and Chicago (Los Angeles is second), have teams placed ninth (Nets), 13th (Knicks) and 12th (Bulls), but that isn’t exactly a big change from last year. But LeBron’s move west certainly is, and that’s leaving the networks with less desirable matchups to show in the early slots. They’re certainly not going to televise the LeBron-less Cavaliers (last in the NBA with a 2-13 record to date) as much as they did before. (LeBron being in the west also means that there’s more competition for the second half of national slots; ESPN or TNT now have to pick between LeBron and the Warriors, rather than showing them back-to-back.)
