Captain Internet posted:Human interest stories are specifically not aimed at the fan of the sport in question but rather casual fans or non-fans. They are used to garner interest in a competition that the viewer has no stake in. This allows a spectator to follow a sport for a story-line without knowing the nuances or rules of the game. It is a gateway used to attract more interest. ...which is why the Manti Te'o/Lennay Kekua thing garnered so much coverage on broadcasts. Here was a very high-profile, talented athlete who made up an entire story about a girlfriend dying of cancer. Sociopathic behavior makes for great TV. e: Also I love this Gus Johnson call. Yeah, Dick Vitale the character took over Dick Vitale the broadcaster sometime in the mid-1990s. That said, on Twitter he shows flickers of an individual behind the TV makeup.

Mahoning posted:We don't normally talk about stuff we love, but I really love Real Sports on HBO. And Frank DeFord is one of my favorite. I love everything Frank DeFord has ever done -- even his NPR sound-bite columns -- and it's kind of sad that he's quietly fading into the sunset. But, more to your point, Real Sports owns.

I haven't listened to Gus Johnson call a soccer game but I can't imagine he's worse at that than calling MMA.

Tim Brando is perfectly fine and is going to own on the SEC Network (if that rumor comes true). Jim Nantz might as well broadcast most sporting events from his house for how much he phones things in.

Costas is a legend, even if his monologues do force the septuagenarians listening to clutch their pearls in fright.

Outside of the 2014 BCS National Championship Game, nobody has ever tried that, and nobody will for the next ~5 years.

If not Fowler, then Rece Davis. If not Rece Davis, then Joe Tessitore. But please, God, give Rece and Joe partners who actually do cogent game analysis to work with.

Anybody investigated 120 Sports at all? Here's a sample video: http://www.120sports.com/video/v82270974/kobe-the-recruiter Not a strong look having Ovie Mughelli comment on basketball, but they've hired a bunch of analysts, apparently.

I like Brad Nessler fine but I am surprised he was working the Sugar Bowl. I'd love for Joe Tessitore to get more plum assignments but they've saddled him with Matt loving Millen for the foreseeable future.
