Getting the rights from ESPN would certainly help FS1 with casual viewers, and considering BTN is majority owned by Fox, you can't rule them out.

This brings up a whole chicken-or-egg situation with FS1: you need people watching the channel to get big-time contracts, and you need big-time contracts to get people watching the channel.

Speaking of BTN2Go, why hasn't Fox folded in BTN to Fox Sports Go and made BTN2Go just the BTN Plus stuff? I'd prefer having fewer apps on my tablet, so they should make this work better.

The Big Ten Conference is shopping around TV rights staring in the 2017-18 season right now. The question is, with budget cuts at ESPN and Fox Sports, will the rights be split (as expected) or will one side overpay?

MourningView posted:ESPNU probably gets more viewers than FS1 much less whatever fox affiliate Purdue gets exiled to I got curious, so I looked at a random Saturday in 2015 (November 14, to be exact) to compare ESPNU to FS1: FS1 Utah vs. Arizona - 575k Kansas State vs. Texas Tech - 414k Kansas vs. TCU - 398k ESPNU Texas vs. West Virginia - 685k Miami (FL) vs. North Carolina - 367k Western Carolina vs. Texas A&M - 296k New Mexico vs. Boise State - 235k Apart from Texas/West Virginia, each of the ESPNU games had fewer viewers than the least-watched FS1 game. Now, this is just one week, but I'd say that, on average, a game on FS1 gets ~50k more viewers than one on ESPNU does. At worst, this Fox deal is a lateral move for the Big Ten.

Well, I am because Big Ten games on ESPNU and ESPNews will, presumably, be a thing of the past with this Fox deal. Obviously ESPN, ESPN2, and ABC are all still going to be major players in showing Big Ten games - it's just now Fox and FS1 will be showing games as well, and that rises all boats in the conference.

MourningView posted:Who gets what isn't clear yet but I kinda doubt Fox paid that much for the rights to broadcast Northwestern and Rutgers games. What I'm trying to get at is that the less-desirable games will now get higher status by virtue of more channels to put the games on. For example, let's take Rivalry Week. I could imagine this scenario happening in 2017: ESPN gets Iowa/Nebraska, Penn State/Michigan State, and Indiana/Purdue Fox Sports gets Ohio State/Michigan, Wisconsin/Minnesota, and Northwestern/Illinois BTN gets Maryland/Rutgers Both ESPN and Fox Sports get three games of (rough) equality. Now, instead of showing three games, BTN only shows one game and the other four teams get more exposure on a basic cable network.

That is true. Apart from ESPN's daily talk lineup, the only thing that moves the needle in sports television is, well, live sports. As much as everyone enjoys NBCSN's coverage, the channel has had many, many failures in non-live sports shows. Remember The 'Lights? The Crossover? The T.Ocho Show? It's hard to blame FS1 for trying to reinvent the wheel (how they try to reinvent the wheel can be blamed), but changing a force of habit can only change when it's forced on the viewer. This is the reason why Khaki Cam happened - Fox Sports said to the Big Ten Conference "We will do anything for your TV rights", because Fox Sports knew that those were the only major rights up for grabs anytime soon. If the Big Ten had said "Nah, we're good with ESPN", then FS1 would be doomed to irrelevance for who knows how long. (Of course, the Big Ten is now playing hard-to-get with ESPN, so this whole issue might never have been in the cards.) A good comparison to what FS1 is going through would be what's going on in Canada. Despite losing national broadcast rights to the NHL, TSN still beats SportsNet in the ratings. Why? Because TSN has the brand. It's not that Canadians stopped watching hockey; TSN is just more ingrained with the average viewer. There is no guarantee that FS1 will ever compete with ESPN. If the day does come when that happens, it will be because Fox Sports built their TV rights packages to be comparable, because that's the only thing that matters in the long run.

This is, of course, because: -NBC holds the rights to the Premier League -Fox holds the rights to the Bundasliga, UEFA club tournaments, and the World Cup -beIN Sports holds the rights to Serie A, La Liga, and most other internationally important leagues ESPN has Euro, half of MLS, some of USM/WNT, and your cash-grab tournaments. If it wasn't for those, ESPN wouldn't have ANY soccer.
