I don't like it, and I'm sorry I ever had anything to do with it.
Man, quiet thread this year. DIVISIONB.CSV

This poll tends toward late-season stability, because it doesn't care about the order in which games are played. A late loss is no worse than an early loss. Thus Oregon just fell to #4. Don't take any of the FCS rankings seriously, as they're based purely on games vs FBS teams and thus aren't very fair.

Every week I keep thinking I'll finally get motivated and run my poll, and every week I don't bother.

Maybe this will be the week. :effort:

I know that feeling. At least you didn't start the thread promising to do summary posts, then discover you'd broken your poll and just can't be assed to fix it. :cripes:

Maybe I'll make it up by going on a retrorating kick in the offseason, I don't know.

I didn't run mine last week, but here's week 11!

around and around we go

Man, quiet thread this year.

Every week I keep thinking I'll finally get motivated and run my poll, and every week I don't bother.

Maybe this will be the week. :effort:

Basil Hayden posted:

I know that feeling. At least you didn't start the thread promising to do summary posts, then discover you'd broken your poll and just can't be assed to fix it. :cripes:

Maybe I'll make it up by going on a retrorating kick in the offseason, I don't know.
The NCAA ended my poll by changing the way stats are presented on their page.

My poll was originally meant to give the true rankings of the team because no one else was doing it, but now that other people are doing it correctly, I don't need to worry about it, which is a nice change from the days when I spent 3 hours a week on the poll. I can read other people's work to know how teams are ranked instead of feeling like I need to do it myself.

I don't like it, and I'm sorry I ever had anything to do with it.
Fortunately mine is still pretty easy to run. It's about a 5-minute process to finagle the CFBStats.com data into last year's format, but one way or another, here's this week's poll & DIVISIONB pastebin.

I gotta look into why UCF and Ohio State got thrown back so far. It can't just be strength of schedule (though OSU's is pretty poor). Something's not right.

Alright, I finally got around to running my poll for the past 12 weeks.

quote:

Description
This ranking is an attempt to rank teams according to how bettors see them, rather than looking at their stats and win/loss records. It is often the case that two teams may be ranked closely in a voted poll, but when they play each other, the point spread is larger than their rankings would indicate. Each week, this poll looks at the upcoming matchup and makes a point spread prediction. This spread is then compared to the actual point spread, and a team's points are adjusted based on the difference. In theory, the point spread guesses will become closer and closer to the actual spreads as the weeks pass, resulting in a more accurate ranking of teams.

Details
Each team has a point value, initially determined by the results of the 2012 poll. The point spread prediction is made using the formula Team B points - Team A points. If the game is a home game for Team A, 3 points are subtracted. If it is an away game, those points are added instead. Note that a prediction is only made for Division 1 teams playing Division 1 teams. If a team is playing a cupcake or has no game, this will be noted on the sheet and their points will not change.

A team's new points for the current week are set with the following formula:
Old Score + (Predicted Spread - Actual Spread)*x, Where x is the Spread Influence variable.

The story of the season so far is Oregon took #1 from Bama in week 4 and has held it since then. They stayed a heavy favorite against Utah so they haven't dropped since the Stanford loss. The top four teams have been pretty far ahead of the rest until this week, when Ohio State jumped up closer to that group.

My poll is really starting to show it's bias towards high-scoring teams this year thanks to Baylor, Oregon, and FSU.

Tidbits:

-This week the poll predicted the spreads of each game to within an average difference of 3.64 points. Not spectacular because it was averaging around 3.00 in the later weeks of 2012. I didn't make any changes to the formula this year.

-FSU will probably lose points next week. My poll is predicting the spread to be a whopping -62.73, while the actual spread is "only" -56.5. This is an extreme example of how lopsided games have too much of an influence on my rankings. They'll only lose a point or two, but I should probably change the poll next year to have the influence variable scale down as the spread goes up.

It's amazing what they can do with computers these days.

MC Fruit Stripe posted:

The NCAA ended my poll by changing the way stats are presented on their page.

My poll was originally meant to give the true rankings of the team because no one else was doing it, but now that other people are doing it correctly, I don't need to worry about it, which is a nice change from the days when I spent 3 hours a week on the poll. I can read other people's work to know how teams are ranked instead of feeling like I need to do it myself.

Glad I'm not the only one this happened to. I might still run my poll at the end of the year if I can figure out how to impore the stats. I also haven't had the free time I did last year, and my team sucks bad so I've been less interested overall in CFB this year.

I've been pasting data from this page and converting it to something I can plug into my table. Beats the first couple of weeks when I did everything by hand. Great time killer when I'm waiting on some database or server patching stuff.

As for Ohio State dropping so far, turns out I was importing some Frank Solich brand Ohio Bobcat data for them, and vice versa...and like bad Mexican food it worked through the system and crapped out some stuff. Same happened for FAU/FIU.

I don't like it, and I'm sorry I ever had anything to do with it.
Haven't done this in a few weeks, but since it's the end of the pre-bowl season I'll go ahead and post the latest result. FBS only, though the ratings are derived from games against FCS teams also, provided the FCS teams have played more than 1 FBS team.

And here I have an additional moon poll I played around with this morning...using my poll and strength of schedule calculations, mixed in with each team's opponents' opponents' average score, I developed a sort of RPI of my own.

This poll seems to sort of underrate even good mid-majors badly because it hits them for their schedule, again for their conference schedule, and the fact their mid-major conference mates play a mid-major conference schedule, but this could be the basis of a power conference-only poll next year or if I want to do a NFL power ranking:

Hey so I finally ran the last six weeks of my poll. congrats to Oregon! :v:

FSU was actually in first going into bowls, but the huge spread for Oregon over Texas was enough to put them on top. Also my poll has been down on Auburn since the start.

Kayak is true
your poll really liked TCU...

Woah! I just found a bug in my poll. Apparently Vegasinsider uses "pk" instead of 0 for an even matchup. I missed this for the past three years, so games that should have been even got practically random values assigned for their point spreads. I'm not sure how I didn't notice this before, especially in previous years when I spent a lot of time looking at the results. Thankfully Vegasinsider still has data for the past few years on their site.

I've updated my last post with the actual final poll. Although I based my initial values off last year's final values, so changes I make to 2011's data might have a minor impact on 2013's results. :stonk:

But they went to the Rosebowl that one time and beat a B1G team! THAT MEANS THEY ARE A TOP TIER BIG 12 TEAM REGARDLESS OF PERFORMANCE UNLESS WE COUNT ALL THOSE MAC TEAMS THEY BEAT.

Seriously though, I hope the Big XII kept their receipt for TCU.

Eh, we kinda needed a team from Texas and they were easily the most promising program. They can probably get good again. Maybe not great, but good.

I've heard some claims that they have trouble drumming up respectable attendance, but the same was true of Baylor until like last year.

It looks like, for some reason, bettors really liked TCU more than they should have. TCU was favored against Texas and Texas Tech, and heavily favored over West Virginia (which my poll also liked for a while). They went 4-8 against the spread.

On the other end of the spectrum, Tulane didn't get any respect from bettors. They went 9-4 against the spread and were the lowest ranked team to go to a bowl.

We most certainly did not need another team from Texas. DFW was already a solid market for UT and TTU. Houston would have been a better team because at least they would have brought more Houston viewership. TCU was wholly because UT wanted another team that would do whatever UT wanted.

While this is probably better discussed in the Off season thread I agree with Kayakyakr.

TCU was just a warm body that happened to be available when the Big XII was looking like it would get picked apart. Hell if certain rumors are true they got in because Dodds was drunk when decision time came.

When I read that story I took it to mean that the B12 ADs had already decided to go with TCU by the time the TCU guy showed up to pitch to Dodds (the day before the official vote). Rather than sit around listening to a pointless sales pitch, Deloss told the dude not to bother and took him to a bar.

That and they wanted a replacement for A&M in as many categories as possible. An in-state team means the travel budget/logistics didn't change as much, and I think it was aimed at maintaining a dynamic where the B12 should always feature at least a couple major matchups between teams from within the state of Texas. Prior to A&M's departure I loved that bragging rights to Texas were basically always on the line in the B12. I felt so robbed when we didn't get to see A&M vs Baylor to settle the issue last year.
