It's been a while and I only skimmed Negima as an obligation after the Rakan portion got excessive, so can someone remind me what the alternative timeline is and when alt-versions of the negima cast showed up? Also where is Kaede?

Honestly, I'm surprised that the future isn't a dystopia following the mold of DNA^2. The idea that Negi overcame being a natural gigolo seems incredibly unlikely. I wonder why he doesn't seem to be all that famous, though? No one ever mentions him even though he was responsible for most of the defining features of the setting. Heck, even the slum is unbelievably pleasant (for a slum), which says a lot about the rest of the world. Maybe he is only famous on Mars?

It really seem likely that this will be a plot point for UQ. Akamatsu ended Negima early to make sure he could still keep the rights to it didn't he? And the fact that we have Eva and Magica Erebrea really makes it seem like he'll wrap up whatever untidy ends he left with the sparse Negima ending.

The Kyoto arc is actually my favorite - we've gotten past the fanservice explicitly for the fanservice, but Negi isn't just a generic invincible shounen hero - the first fight at the gates with Kotarou was clever. As much as ADTRW loves Rakan and manly men, he's pretty boring. Also, character development stopped after Akamatsu decided that Negima would be pure shounen. Something about the early chapters and learning a little about everyone in the class was great and I wish it had continued.

What? Character development didn't stop when it became more shounen. If anything he got better at it as the series went on. Up to the end the characters, including minor side characters, were regularly being paired off with new or different people and put in a variety of new situations, learning new skills. Yue and Chisame off the top of my head were two of the biggest ones.

And the tournament arc had some of the top fights in the series. The only even slightly mediocre one was Eva vs. Setsuna. Negima's tournament arc was that rarest of things in shounen: a tournament arc that was actually worth reading and wasn't blatant filler, but instead developed the characters involved greatly.

I'll admit that the tournament arc was great but everyone that wasn't in the main cast got dropped hard.

We saw what happens when one of the completely uninteresting characters gets some focus. (Ako sucks.)

The thing is I don't think they would have sucked if he didn't transition to full-on shounen so quickly.

The last few chapters of Negima are so disappointing, I am glad UQ Holder eventually came out. I still laugh at Chisame's ending though "Oh yeah, she became a total recluse, and doesn't ever leave her home now."

I do like the 15-20 chapters between the end of the magical world arc and the 'end' chapters. The return to light hearted comedy was actually kind of refreshing.

I'm a fan of his daily life chapters - ignoring the fanservice and how well choreographed his fights are, the atmosphere of the worlds he creates is where he really shines

I stopped reading this right after Karin got buried. Imagine my surprise to see a zombie apocalypse a few chapters later. Jesus. Was not expecting that.

As for Negi's mom, no, we never do see what happened to her. Since she didn't show up in the last chapter, it's probably safe to say she died somewhere.

Didn't they both show up all lovey dovey with no explanation near the last chapters?

Setsuna managed to be both a lover and a fighter, so there's precedent I guess

Motoko's whole arc in love hina was about that too so it's just a case of Ken recycling the same loving swordwoman AM I WEAK OR AM I WOMAN with a genderbender twist

plus you know that he's going to win the harem war because of first girl precedent, Akamatsu isn't exactly innovative

didn't end on his terms, and before he decided to turn it into a full battle manga and stopped playing the romance angle straight Asuna was always the front runner. So as a side note, I found out that the group that scanlated a lot of Negima has disappeared from everywhere but IRC. Website, forum, it's all gone.

Weird to think Negima was so long ago that entire communities started and died.

It's really weird because I worked with Meow when I was back in middle school and now I'm finishing grad school.

It's moderately less creepy since it's not middle school girls/elementary school kids and refreshing that it's taken so light-heartedly. Love Hina took years for confessions and the romance/ecchi was the least interesting part of Negima (for all the love ADRTW has for Rakan it's creepy as gently caress for him to be smacking elementary school rear end.) Having Touta move back to shounen save the world through his love for his surrogate mom is a good compromise. I'm still not convinced it's romantic love, and I'm sure Ken's going to play that distinction for laughs for another few years before having Touta drop "uh I meant I want to be with my family for the rest of my life, peace."

I wiped Negima's ending from my memory, can someone explain what this means in terms of timelines?

EDIT: maybe also a summary of the entire magical world final arc, I just remember there was some dumb queen that was related to both Negi and Asuna that Nagi fell in love with??? Was she Negi's mom and Asuna's sister or something? Also don't remember who the lifemaker actually is or why she was revealed to be a girl.

Kirie moe fans are just as bad as people who liked early pre-Kyoto Negima; they just haven't had the pedophile veil thrown on them yet because Kirie is a meme character. UQ holder going in boring directions.

Fights are neat and can be visual spectacles, but, especially in comic form, they often become boring and are effectively filler. What ends up usually mattering in a fight is who wins. Non-fight stuff is more entertaining. Character development, character conflict, plot advancement, etc.

And we're developing Kirie. We developed Kuroumaru not too long ago, and we've started Karin. I'm all for it.

The opposite of character development is happening. A moeblob is not a character. Kuromaru's development was interesting because s/h/ze avoided it. Karin's development suffers for it. Yue suffered from it too.

The mass naked child event has gone on long enough. Embarrased Kirie is boring. Naked Kirie is bad. I mean poo poo, there is no point in reading an akamatsu manga if you are allergic to fanservice, but this is a bit much.
[/quote]

Also shows how boringly similar Touta's harem (and by extension UQ holder since this current arc) is, all the stripped children look identical and act identically

Akamatsu really is a weak writer. Great concepts, great artistic detail, and decent characterization when he remembers, but this is really the most boring drivel that he could have taken the concept of "consequences of immortality" and fan favorite Eva to. Making even Eva a boring character is a crime.

a race with no particular stakes could have been fine. not something i particularly care about, but not every chapter has to be great. only this bullshit was just an excuse for akamatsu to draw naked children. it isnt like the man went easy on that crap before, what with all the bath scenes and title pages, but the race has really been too much. so i have to ask myself, is the rest of the manga good enough to make up for the softcore kiddie porn? the answer is obviously no. it could be the most amazing work of fiction known to man and the answer would still be no, and this is just a shounen fighting manga.

i still have a slight sense of shame left, so im done with this.

I love your posting, but seriously goons were in love with let's-strip-prepubescent-girls-and-grope-them Rakan which is worse than this. Don't pretend that Akamatsu has gotten any worse since then. I don't enjoy the direction this manga has gone either.

Excluding that which we aren't talking about being worse this chapter, the weirdest thing was that out-of-place realistic panel with mostly Japanese-featured humans. Even in UQ Holder Akamatsu's been using his generic half anime humans, half magic sentient beasts crowds. From how the Ala Rubra/Alba members are acting either it's brainwashing or illusions?
