Final Fantasy Job Faire
Update #30: At Fran's Side.

New logbook entries:

Dark Clouds
  • Storms rage about the Pillar of Heaven. Fran is safe and in our number. Never have I spoken to a viera before, but they share much in common with aegyl. Still, there is something very different about her. Perhaps it is her anima?
    - Llyud

Mist
  • Sounds like Fran doesn't make any more sense to you than she does to us, Llyud. Don't get me wrong, though. I like having her around. I hope she decides to stay.
    - Kytes

Planning the Plan
  • I couldn't agree more, Kytes! All we need is a plan to convince her to stick around... You'll think of something!
    - Tomaj
  • I'll think of something? Umm, I don't know about that...
    - Kytes

New Cu Sith Quiz:

The quiz for the Pyroblade is the same as a previous quiz for Vaan, the Flametongue.

The quiz for the Pyroscepter is the same as every other quiz for Penelo's items.

Pyrowand
What's Kytes got in the bag?
  • Medicine, I guess.
  • Hopes and Dreams.
  • I haven't the slightest idea.
Isn't Kytes the sweetest?
  • You said it.
  • He could use some backbone.
  • He can be a pain sometimes.
What would you do if you were Kytes for a day?
  • Exercise and build muscle.
  • What happens to me while I'm him?
  • Finish what Penelo puts on my plate.

The quiz for the Pyroglide is the same as a previous quiz for Filo, the Detonator.

The quiz for the Pyrolance is the same as a previous quiz for Llyud, the Red Halberd.

So why are so many of Cu Sith's quizzes the same? There is a reasonable explanation, and that is, the quiz is determined by the elemental nature of the weapon. So all fire weapons have the same quiz, all water weapons have a different quiz, all neutral weapons have their own quiz, all so on for the different elements. Since Penelo's weapons come in one flavour, which is healing, that means her quiz is what it is, forever.

"I think you may be on to something there. She hardly ever speaks, and half the time when she does you wish she hadn't."

"Yet still we are different. Is it our anima that separates us?"

"Well, Fran's different from just about everyone I've ever met. She has an uncanny ability to read people."

"Perhaps this ability, too, stems from her anima."

"I don't think I'm the person to ask."

"Anima is such a elusive concept. Impossible to pin down."

"Yeah, and up to his same old tricks again."

"At least Fran's okay."

"She didn't need any help from us, that's for sure."

"I know. But I think she was still glad we came. The way Kytes and Tomaj have been acting, you'd think they'd never seen a viera before."

"You got me."

"It must be the ears. Yeah, that's gotta be it."

"I think someone sounds a little jealous."

"What's Fran got that I don't?"

"More or less. All the ones I've met, anyway."

"Well, you've met more viera than I have. You hardly ever see any in Rabanastre. I think Fran noticed me staring at her ears. I hope she doesn't get mad!"

"Huh?"

"It's Fran. There's just something about her..."

"Uh, right..."

"I can't quite put my finger on it..."

"Huh? Me?"

"You've found something to protect."

"I have?"

It will give you strength. Remember that. I sense no Mist from this ship. No skystone. No glossair engines."

This is too weird, so let's get on with the next mission before it gets weirder.

- At Fran's Side: Her abduction thwarted, Fran guides the party through sacred mountain passes as they traverse the Ymir Qul to find Balthier.

Soundtrack: Penelo's Theme

"Why do you ask?"

"I guess that is pretty important."

"If you had forever to spend with someone who really understood you?"

"I should want to be with them in a night to which dawn would never come, for even eternity must end. Eternity is an illusion. Remember this."

"Balthier came this way too, didn't he?"

"There is an entrance to a cavern just ahead. Come."

- Objective: Accompany Fran to the cave. At least one ally must survive. Fran must survive. -

Carbuncle have been a staple of my esper choices ever since I unlocked them really, but for this battle, i'm giving them a miss. Although it sounds cliché, the best defence in this fight is a good offence. You'll also notice the level espers II cover the gamut of melee-flying-ranged, so everyone gets level II esper power. Golem and Shivar are in part picked for their abilities, which can inflict Stop, and slowing down our foes here is going to be a good idea.

Soundtrack: Dungeon 1 Field - Dungeon 1 Battle

"Take care that you do not come to rely too heavily on it."

In this battle, you will be escorting Fran through a winding path. Fran moves on her own (you don't control her here), and goes through the level at a surprisingly brisk pace. If she gets too far ahead, she'll be mobbed by foes - and while she does defend herself, in a one-against-many scenario, she'll fall quickly. It's important to keep up with her.

Case in point, Fran walks headlong toward a dead end, meaning I steered my party the wrong way. Well, it doesn't take much to correct it.

All the sacks on the top-screen map are treasure chests, by the way. It is fair to say these treasures aren't great, they're all crafting materials and mimics. Safety in numbers is usually a preferred strategy for all Revenant wings fights, but buffing Vaan with sprint and sending him into collect treasure chests while your other members are fighting alongside Fran is a good idea, to keep treasure collection manageable.

The last half of the fight is as tricky as the first. Lost quite a few of my Espers, so there's less attack output. Also, if you'll notice on the top-screen map, enemies are constantly spawning from the entrance of the level, meaning that stragglers need to be on the lookout, and that you can't get too far ahead of Fran either.

Let's go back to why I didn't bring Carbuncle for a moment. Killing things quickly and being quick in general is necessary to stay close to Fran, so to go for an offensive strategy is preferred. Penelo and some white rabbits make fine healing in this fight. This fight can be really fun, or really frustrating, depending on if you enjoy the challenge of juggling Fran with your own desire to collect treasure. I really enjoyed doing this one though. Although none of the treasure is missable, it's 'Balthier's leftovers' after all, so don't feel bad if you have to skip it!

The final stretch here has two chests on it, both contain Mimics. As with the last mission we saw them in, which involved Rikken, they're big HP sponges that slow you down. Vaan's not doing ok though, but Penelo looks like she's charged her quickening, so...

Click for a short video of the quickening in action! (Because like Vaan's, there is no way to .GIF this.)

Penelo's Quickening is called Dance of Rapture. It fully heals all of your units, and removes any debuffs they're afflicted by. It's basically a heal-all, which can pull you out of some thorny situations really easily.

The healing boost from that really helps carry us through to the end.

"You can feel the Mist, right?"

"It lingers on the wind. His presence with it."

Soundtrack: Genjyunomori (Eruyt Village)

"Glad we had Fran with us to show us the way."

"The Mist grows hot. Let us hurry."

See you guys next time.
