Skyrim is set two hundred years after the events of Oblivion, in the land of Skyrim. The province has erupted into civil war after the assassination of its king. Concurrently, the god Alduin, who takes the form of a massive dragon, has arisen to destroy the world. The player character is one of the last living Dovahkiin (Dragonborn), and must fend off Alduin and save Skyrim from destruction.

Skyrim is not a direct sequel to Oblivion; rather, it is a new chapter in the Elder Scrolls series, set two hundred years after the events of Oblivion. In the preamble to Skyrim, the Empire began ceding territory to the Elven nations it once ruled, because there was no heir to the Emperor's throne. The Blades had no one to defend, and gradually died, were murdered, or secluded themselves from the rest of the world. After the king of Skyrim was assassinated, a civil war broke out amongst the native Nord race – the majority being those who wished for Skyrim to secede from the Empire, and the rest being those who wished for Skyrim to stay in the Empire.

As with previous Elder Scrolls games, Skyrim begins with the player character as an unknown prisoner, on the way to their own execution. The player eventually learns that Skyrim's civil war is last in a sequence of prophetic events foretold by the Elder Scrolls, which also foretell of the return of Alduin, the Nordic god of destruction. Taking the form of a gigantic dragon, Alduin is prophesied to consume the world with his servants, the Jills (a race of black dragons). The player character is the last Dovahkiin (Dragonborn), a dragon hunter anointed by the gods to help fend off the threat Alduin poses to Skyrim and Tamriel. Aiding the player is Esbern (voiced by Max von Sydow), one of the last Blades.

Skyrim's game world is the province of Skyrim. It is a northern province of Tamriel, the continent on which all the games in the series have taken place. Skyrim is roughly the same size as Oblivion's game world Cyrodiil, which is around 16 square miles (41 square kilometers) in area. Within Skyrim lie five cities, larger than Cyrodiil's cities, as well as smaller townships and expanses of wilderness. Much of Skyrim's topography is mountainous, and dragons are frequently encountered when exploring the wilderness. There are over 150 dungeons scattered across Skyrim, and when the player enters a dungeon for the first time, the monsters within lock to the player's level permanently, even if visited later at a higher level. Fast-travelling is a returning feature, allowing the player to instantly travel to any marked location that has been previously visited. Over 300 in-game books will be featured for the player to read in order to learn about the lore of the world.

These are just a few of the features for Skyrim, voted by Goons as being the most important; however, remember that this game has hundreds of new features, and the best way to find out about them is to simply play the game.

  • Radiant Story - Many quests are still completely governed by Bethesda, but the Radiant Story system helps randomize and relate the side quests to players to make the experience as dynamic and reactive as possible. Rather than inundate you with a string of unrelated and mundane tasks, it tailors missions based on who your character is, where you're at, what you've done in the past, and what you're currently doing. Radiant Story is also smart enough to know which caves and dungeons you've already visited and thus conditionalize where, for instance, a kidnapped person is being held to direct you toward a specific place you haven't been to before, populated with a specific level of enemy. Skyrim also tracks your friendships and grudges to generate missions. Do a small favor for a farmer and it may eventually lead to a larger quest. Some NPCs will even agree to be your companion to help you out in specific situations.

  • Combat - Combat in Skyrim has been majorly overhauled from it's predecessors. Combat physics have been improved, making it seem more realistic, combat A.I have been improved, making the enemy and allies smarter. Dual wielding has been talked about a lot, and it seems you can dual wield almost anything, and you can even use your torch as a weapon. Combat also features 'magnetism', which makes your attacks less likely to hit allies, which should make companions much more feasible than before.

  • Skills - Skyrim features 18 skills so we know that at least three skills from Oblivion are gone, and these are Acrobatics, Athletics and mercantile. With Acrobatics and Athletics gone, it seems your standard jump height and running/swimming speed will be set in stone, but this may be remedied with Dragon Shouts. Mercantile on the other hand, hasn't really been removed, but has been merged with Speechcraft. Weapon skills like Blunt and Blade have been converted to One-handed and Two-handed, while armorer have had it's name changed to smithing. Skills still progress like they do in previous Elder Scrolls games, as you use them.

Skills are divided into three categories; thief, warrior and mage. These categories don't really do anything as far as we know and are mostly guidelines for the player. Skill categories are as follows:

Thief: Alchemy, Light Armor, Speech, Sneak, Lockpicking and Pickpocketing.

Warrior: Smithing, Heavy Armor, Block, Two-handed, One-Handed and Archery.

Mage: Enchanting, Destruction, Alteration, Conjuration, Restoration and Illusion.

As you can see, the thief has no direct combat skills, and thus, playing a "pure" thief in Skyrim won't work very well as you will have to use a weapon or spell at some point.

  • Perks - There are more than 280 perks in Skyrim, of which you will only be able to pick 75 in one game. This means that if you want to test all the perks in the game, you will have to play the game four times. Now, that's replayability! But let's not get ahead of ourselves here; we also have to remember that this number includes perk ranks as well, and some perks have as many as five ranks.

Perks are linked with skills, and to be able to master certain perks you will also have to master the skill the perk is associated with. So, to pick the latest perk in the speechcraft tree, you will have to be a master of speechcrafting. There are 18 different perk trees, all associated with their own skill.

  • Artificial Intelligence - The game uses the same Radiant A.I. system as in Oblivion but it appears to have been significantly updated. Townspeople won't be loitering around aimlessly in the towns in Skyrim and they will always have a task to do, like chopping wood, sawing, smithing or farming. Relationships between the player and NPCs have also been improved, and a friend of the player will, for instance, offer you lodging instead of demanding you to leave if you barge into their house in the middle of the night. They will also not kill you over a stolen apple. Another very unique thing about the A.I in Skyrim is when you drop an item, NPCs will react to this if they see it. If a boy sees that you drop it, they might come up to you and try to give it back, while two men might start a fight over the item, all based on what kind of item you dropped.

It's not just the NPCs that have had their A.I improved - creatures also act more believable. The way creatures operate during a fight is based on how many they are, how strong they are or how strong you are compared to them. For instance, a pack of wolves will try to circle around you instead of barging head on against you. Relations between creatures also exist on a higher level than before. The giants and the mammoths travel together in packs, ignoring the player if left undisturbed. However, if you start a fight with one of them, you better come prepared, as they will all try to smash you to pieces.

  • Sound - Skyrim features a horde of voice actors! According to Bethesda, Skyrim features over 70 voice actors, more than 4 times the amount of voice actors in oblivion (including Shivering Isles). Among the cast of voice actors there are a few Academy Award nominees, including Christopher Plummer ('The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo', 'The Insider'), Max Von Sydow ('The Exorcist', 'Minority Report'), and Joan Allen ('The Contender', 'The Bourne Ultimatum'). There are approximately 60,000 lines of spoken dialogue in Skyrim, which is about 15,000 more than in Fallout 3. Oh, and as always, Jeremy Soule will be composing the music.

  • Character Generation - When first creating your character, you are presented with a bunch of sliders which changes different aspects of your appearance. You can change the size of your nose, the shape of your ears and even how fat or muscular you are. Now, that's the visuals, and then I guess you want to know about the other aspects of Character Generation... Well, there are none. In previous Elder Scrolls games, you were able to pick a class , choose which skills were your major ones and pick a birth sign. All of that has been removed, so you define your character as you play, and all skill advancements contribute to a level-up.

The Vampire Lord Harkon has returned to power. By using the Elder Scrolls, he seeks to do the unthinkable - to end the sun itself. Will you join the ancient order of the Dawnguard and stop him? Or will you become a Vampire Lord yourself? Featuring an all new faction questline and locations, the ultimate choice will be yours.

Tweaks and minor mod chat in this thread is fine but a modding-oriented thread was made by someone so that this thread doesn't degrade into boobs-on-mudcrabs chat. Speaking of tweaks and customization, I don't want to lose this from the now-closed forums, so I will copy and paste this in here.

A dedicated modding thread is found here.

Tweaks and Customization

Unless otherwise signaled, these fixes are primarily for the PC version of the game, as fixes for consoles are usually limited to waiting for patches. Console-related problems are primarily at the mercy of official patches.

Console commands (PC): Click here for a full list of PC console commands.

My shadows are horrible, pixelated pieces of poo poo even on Ultra settings

Unfortunately, it appears that the game's Shadow settings are integrated with each other. What this means is, the game's shadows are rendered based on resolution/quality in conjunction with distance. The more distance you have set your shadows to render, the less in quality the shadows are. The less your distance, the better the quality. You can change the settings with the instructions below to lower the default Ultra distance (8000) to something lower. Goons have found that 4096 seems to be a sweet spot between quality and distance.

  1. Go to your My Documents -> My Games -> Skyrim
  2. Create a backup of the SkyrimPrefs.ini file
  3. Open SkyrimPrefs.ini and search for the [Display] section
  4. Change fShadowDistance=8000.0000 to fShadowDistance=4096.0000
  5. Save and close this file

How do I change the FOV?

Primary method that has the most success from Goons

  1. Go to your My Documents -> My Games -> Skyrim
  2. Create a backup of the SkyrimPrefs.ini file
  3. Open SkyrimPrefs.ini and search for the [General] section
  4. Add fdefaultfov=XX at the end of the section (where XX is the value you want to change to)
  5. Save and close this file
  6. Create a backup of the Skyrim.ini file
  7. Open Skyrim.ini and search for the [Display] section
  8. Add fDefaultWorldFOV=XX (where XX is the FOV value you put in fdefaultfov)
  9. Add fDefault1stPersonFOV=xx.0000 (where XX is the FOV value you put in fdefaultfov)
  10. Save and close this file

How about some tweaks to make Skyrim look even more pretty?

This is a good one.

Fundamentals of Character Editing from Console

Understand that opening, or using console commands does not affect achievement triggering in any way. You can still get achievements while using the console without fear.

Open/close console: ~

Search help for a string:
code:
help "string here" <0,1,2,3,4>
If the string has spaces in it, use double quotes. The search types are:
0: all
1: functions
2: settings
3: globals
4: other forms

To find the perk ID for the Block perk Quick Reflexes, type:
code:
help "Quick Reflexes" 4
One result should be:
code:
PERK: (000D8C33) 'Quick Reflexes'
Leading zeros can be omitted.

To add or remove this perk
code:
player.addperk 000D8C33
player.removeperk 000D8C33
Some perks have multiple levels, each of which has its own perk ID. To use the Shield Wall perk, start by finding the IDs:
code:
help "Shield Wall" 4
The results are:
code:
PERK: (00079355) 'Shield Wall'
PERK: (00079356) 'Shield Wall'
PERK: (00079357) 'Shield Wall'
PERK: (00079358) 'Shield Wall'
PERK: (000BCCAE) 'Shield Wall'
To add/remove rank one:
code:
player.addperk 000BCCAE
player.removeperk 000BCCAE
Be sure to add/remove these in order or the perk display UI might get confused. You may have to experiment to find the correct order.

Some other useful commands are player.additem and player.removeitem. For example, to add gold you need to find the item ID, then use that when calling additem:

code:
help gold 4

MISC: (0000000F) 'Gold'

player.additem F <amount>
This method can be used to edit known spells and manage your inventory with a little digging around.

Help, there is some kind of visual effect stuck on my screen! (Blood, blurry and blindness effects on the camera; NOT on the character)

  1. In game, open up the Console (default key is ~)
  2. Type in one of two commands:

    RemoveImageSpaceModifier(rimod)
    RemoveImageSpaceModifiersCrossFade(rimodcf)

If the vision effect was two parts, rimodcf is probably the command you want. I haven't seen anything require rimod yet, but if the crossfade can get stuck I suppose the original modifier can too.

Is there a way to turn off killing animations?

  1. Open the console by pressing ~ in game
  2. Type set killmoverandom to <0-100>, where <0-100> is an integer representing the chance to do a finishing move (in this case, 0)

How do I shorten or lengthen the book-opening animation?

  1. Go to your My Documents -> My Games -> Skyrim
  2. Create a backup of the Skyrim.ini file
  3. Open the file, then scroll down to where it says [Interface]. If you do not see this, add it at the bottom of Skyrim.ini
  4. Add to the bottom of the section fBookOpenTime=XX.0000, where XX is the value of the opening animation (default is 1000). Most goons recommend changing it to 400
  5. Save, exit, and play

Right when I'm getting into Skyrim - bookmarked a few threads a few days ago - the forum closes.

Anyway. Bethesda, why didn't you include a non-enchanted version of the Thalmor robes? They're like the only pretty cool looking robes in the game, but come exclusively with a sucky enchantment. (Playing on console here).

It's been awhile since I played, did anyone ever reveal what was up with the various insects in jars that you can find? At the time there was all sorts of speculation that they were an unfinished quest or part of something that would appear when the DLC was out. Did anything ever come of that?

So what's gonna happen to the modding/visual modding threads for Skyrim? Because there's still a ton of good stuff to find, especially in the visuals category (Boris is actively developing ENB and it's getting better and better with each new version)

Is someone gonna make a new thread and combine both?

Oh, and since it is a general thread, is it cool to discuss the in-game literature too?

I'd like to take a moment to talk about Imaginator. Essentially, it allows you to change the game's brightness, contrast, and color balance and saturation on the fly.

A splash of red, for example, really evens out the game's palette and makes it more vibrant in general. I realize we're trying to keep mod chat separate, but since the bleak landscapes of the game are kind of a common complaint I figure it's pertinent to everyone, like that one Fallout 3 mod that removes the green tint from everything.

Now I see there's an all-DLC version of the game, is there any way to upgrade my version to that for a discount or am I just going to have to wait for all the DLC to go on sale in the future?

I weep for the motherland.
Is the "Radiant Story" feature something added by one of the expansions? Or is it a player-made mod? I've only played the vanilla game with tons of mods.

This feature is supposed to make the game not "inundate you with a string of unrelated and mundane tasks." Inundating you with a string of unrelated and mundane tasks seems to pretty accurately describe how the side quests always were for me. There didn't seem to be any special intelligence to the order or way I was given side quests.

Inundating you with a string of unrelated and mundane tasks seems to pretty accurately describe how the side quests always were for me. There didn't seem to be any special intelligence to the order or way I was given side quests.

It's a vanilla feature, but it's not as grandiose as the description makes it out to be. A bunch of caves and dungeon type areas are flagged as being radiant locations, and the enemies you will find inside of them are affected by it. General "Go here and do this" quests use the pool of radiant flagged areas as their destination. Some main quest locations use the radiant pool, but not many. It's mostly a side-quest mechanism. Some other quests use radiant flagged containers, like the thief guild side job quests.

It's part of the base game. All it does it generate quests based on a pool of variables, such as location, quest object, quest giver, etc. For example, all those quests you do after the major faction quests are Radiant quests, since they're generated based on a pool of available data. So it basically generates random quests, a la Daggerfall. Also, bounties are radiant.

Also, it sets who does what in the event that someone dies. If John dies, Jill takes over his role in the quests.

The UESP has information on Radiant quests, such as what assets are available for what roles. Also, the way you describe how the system works is pretty accurate. It ends up just being poo poo to do.

Well, it's not too terrible in its current implementation. But that feature description made me think it might be something new. I guess the game was doing a bit more under the hood than I thought.

Thanks for the replies.

I've put well over 200 hours into the game. So it's been worthwhile. If I ever get the expansions then that'll give me a lot more to do in the game.

Minor mod chat is fine, along with tweaks and whatnot. I just don't think this thread should be mod-oriented. I might try to find the tweaks thread and create a help section.

Anyways this is interesting and looks like it is on par with FXAA injection.

Doesn't the radiant AI handle all the side conversations between npcs as well and the daily activities of them?

Oh, the subforum is finally gone. Not that I didn't enjoy it- there was a ton of useful info there- but it was definitely past time for it to be taken out back.

It's been a while since I played Skyrim, I'd been thinking about upgrading to a better computer so that I could actually play with some of them fancy lighting mods. By the time I get around to it, I'm sure I'll have to spend approximately an eternity updating everything I've already got on my install. Pretty sure I spend more time modding TES games than playing them.

I never finished Redguard, but these days I think most people would find it drat near unplayable even if you could get it running. Just watching the videos makes me cringe.

It was my first game I played on a 3d accelerator card. A Voodoo Banshee 16mb. I remember the graphics being pretty amazing at the time.

This game has trained me not to be a packrat or get I'll overwhelmed. My first few characters I ended up with insane amounts of little miscellaneous poo poo in my inventory thinking "maybe I'll use these Dwarven cups later!" and the inventory system is pretty terrible for that kind of hoarding. Now I'm really careful about what I pickup. If I can't sell it for gobs of money or if I'm not going to use it, then I stop myself.

One thing I can never get a handle on though, is however much I try to complete quests one by one and keep the count down (not stopping in the middle of a sidequest or getting distracted) I always loving end up with like 20 quests because people (or talking dogs) will literally just walk up to you and you don't wanna decline. Quest journal fatigue.

Speaking of graphics (and yes, this is minor mod talk here), I highly recommend looking into the ENB series graphics modifications binaries (find them at https://www.enbdev.com).

Why? Because it takes this:

and turns it into this (lovely imgur compression ahoy!):

(This is the Quietcool ENB configuration with a customized wide-screen setting)

But while a prettier Skyrim is good and all, there's also a very useful thing that has come out of the latest ENB series binaries. And that is a workaround for the dreaded 3.1GB memory limit for the game. If you're into modding any Bethesda game, you'll know that the game will crash if it eats up more than 3.1 gigs of RAM. Boris (ENB creator) managed to create a workaround for that problem in the latest series of binaries. And yes, you can run the ENB without actually touching the graphics, which is useful if you want the memory hack, but your computer can't handle the stress of graphics modification.

So, if you plan on doing any sort of modding (and especially if you plan on using HD textures), I highly recommend it.

Are you on PC? If so, check out this mod and this mod.

This sort of falls into gameplay, since with these two very small mods you can keep the clutter in your quest log to a minimum.

Apologies for the derail into mod territory, but I think these two (ENB and the quest minimization mods) can really help improve the basic gameplay.
