Saw a new one today. coming up to a red light, the guy in front of me turned right onto a side street, immediately did a u-turn in the middle of that street, and then turned right back onto the street on the other side of the light.

Like he thinks he discovered some crazy loophole where he didn't just run a red light, he made 2 legal turns and one crazy u-turn in the middle of the side street.

I see something like that every once in a while: driver misses protected left in the light cycle, so they just go straight, immediate (usually) legal U-turn, and then immediate right. All of that to avoid waiting for the protected left again.

I remember not long ago someone posted about this being the standard intersection configuration somewhere. No left turn lane, instead there's a u-turn lane just past the intersection.

"Michigan Left", but only in some areas and only on 4+ lane roads with a median wide enough.

What's the story behind that? It sounded like his engine was still running, so IMO there's basically no reason to land on a highway especially that close to bridges and signs and poo poo, unless this happened to be in the middle of nowhere with trees all around.

Could be impending emergency. Loss of oil pressure, coolant, etc. Better to land while you still have power / control than without.

Edit: Phone ate my post.

Hell of a good landing. Negotiating not just overpasses and overhead signs but even finding a big open spot in the car traffic. Serious kudos to that pilot. (I assume there was NO other option but the highway.)

I wonder how they're going to get the plane out of there.

I would think the DOT wants the plane out of there ASAP and would be happy with this solution. Rubbernecking ruins everything.

I didn’t know what this U‐turn looked like or where it was done, but you might be surprised how lax some states’ laws on them can be. Like “no cars within a few hundred feet? Not driving over a raised barrier? You’re good!”

But there are multiple other things a cop can get you for, like “avoiding a traffic control device”.

Pip-Pip old chap! Last one in is a rotten egg what what.

There used to be a great 4 way intersection near my old house where if I missed my light to cross traffic I could add another ten minutes into my commute waiting for the next light, or I could turn the opposite way, U-turn and go straight across the junction 60 seconds later. I tried it once and got applause from a white van driver.

After years of almost being run over by motorists, motorcyclists and bicyclists I decided to start wearing a bodycam for my walk to and from work. I haven't captured anything horrifying yet but it's only a matter of time. Best so far is a Lexus running a red light, almost hitting me in a marked crosswalk and flipping me off as he flew past. Couldn't see the bird in the video though.

I'll do this at certain lights that take forever if you miss them but for whatever reason have little traffic coming from the right. Feels good man.

I ended up next to him at the next light across a fairly major road, got ahead of him because i actually went when the light turned green, and then idled along through the long construction zone there with him right behind me, so he didn't save anything anyways.

On my way to work today a Lexus was absolutely up my rear end on an airport perimeter road with a few stoplights.

I wasn't anywhere near first in the line of cars. The guy was visibly gesturing and losing his poo poo in the driver's seat. Throwing his hands up, yelling (presumably), you name it. We were stopped at a red light all waiting to make a right turn.

Once we turned I stayed slow in the right lane and motioned for him to pass. I didn't want to be around that kind of crazy any longer than I had to.

They changed ours this year to a larger fine plus 6 points per offence, which is half your allowance before a ban, and will get your licence rescinded if you've been driving less than two years.

Still see people doing it.

That's better than us in Colorado who just signed this law not too long ago.

It's 100% legalese but the gist of it is that they made the penalties for texting while driving harsher, but then went ahead and amended the wording such that texting while driving is only illegal "in a manner that [may cause] the operator to drive in a careless and imprudent manner."

So basically the law is now "Sure you can text and drive but if it fucks up your driving (so all the time) the penalties are harsher."

This part I don't quite get: "Hands-free use is allowed
• Hands-free use, such as through Bluetooth, is allowed as is a single touch to start a function. Start GPS or music before you drive."

So like, if music is playing from the stereo, I can flip through radio stations, change cd's, navigate a directory structure on a usb drive via the touch screen display, but if it's from a phone you have to have a playlist pre-made and just hit play before you shift out of park? Or if you have Android Auto and can control functions via your car's in-dash touchscreen is that allowed? I'm curious if any studies have been done proving loving with your car's touchscreen is any more or less distracting than loving with your phone's

Yes please! This is coming from a cyclist who doesn't drive a car.

The grieving parents of a 21-year old who got killed by a texter suggested the punishment be the same as those for drunk driving. I'd say maybe it should be even higher, these people are stone cold sober when they decide to use their phones while driving.

From my own experience, car touchscreens are even more distracting. They're always slow, with terrible UIs; it takes way longer than it rightfully should to do anything useful on one.

Keep in mind that this new Washington State law only makes these things secondary offenses - you can't be pulled over for them alone, there has to be another, primary offense first.

A. Yes. A police officer can pull someone over just for using a handheld device.

It's the eating/drinking/grooming/reading while driving that's a secondary offense.
