Can someone give a quick how and what to for mods? The base game seems pretty empty, I'd like to mod it up a bit, but throwing the un-curated kitchen sink at it seems like a bad idea.

Logistics seems a bit constrictive. I've had to spend my last few aptitude level ups just to get to a fleet with 1 cruiser, 4 destroyers, 2 frigates and 2 fighter wings. It seems like it would be really difficult to get a fleet with battleships and a lot of support ships.

Also, chasing down fleeing ships seems harder than it should be. Every single one of my ships has an Unstable Injector, but they don't seem to be faster because of it in the combat screen.

What does it mean when it tells you (before engagement) that your fleet is too big to engage effectively unless the enemy fleet is already in disarray? Is that some system telling me that it's going to screw me, or just that it thinks the fight is too much for me?

Anyone have a mirror for BRDY and the other plugins to SS+? Mediafire never works well at the best of times, and it's not working at all for me right now.

Yep, same exact problem here. Pretty sure it's using the 880M, but not sure. I have to tell it to use the discrete card for Java. :)

Ah, my problem was that despite nuking the JRE and making sure the 64bit JRE was on my path, it was using a Java.exe in System or System32 or something.

Fixed now, not that I can really tell a difference.

Just started SS+. Pretty cool.

It seems like I have little choice but to pick on independents when starting though. Pirate fleets are just not plentiful enough. I've gone to a few different bounty systems and they're usually pretty clean of people they hate, unless the things they hate in their system are the giant Hegemony invasion fleets, which I can't do that much about.

So I've been knocking off indie fleets and the occasional pirate. And now the pirates, indies and Diktat (killed one of their ships and now we're blood enemies apparently) have posted a bounty on me. A decent one. I'd take it.

Is there any reason I shouldn't be mugging the indies? They really seem like the only viable target in the beginning.

Backov
Mar 28, 2010
Ya, so far with 2 extra factions my genocide of the indies has only been a problem when one of their big fleets catches me. The bounties they offer are pretty drat small, and there's not many of them.

The worst thing happened. Tri-Tach had a Medusa in stock, and I was just short of the rep needed to buy it. So I went and killed some pirates. Got back, out of stock.

Layaway it for me you bastards!

Backov

So I had a good, terrifying fight with a Hegemony fleet. My 3 Medusas, Archon, Desidinova and 12 or so frigates versus his Dominator, 6 or so destroyers and a bunch of frigates.

We won, but drat that Dominator was scary as hell. I basically had to keep it distracted in my Medusa while the rest of my fleet killed everything else. And then it was a fairly protracted gang-bang to get the Dominator down.

And then I captured it!

The problem: It has roughly infinity guns and I have no idea where I'm going to be able to fit it. I guess leave it parked somewhere and make a shopping list?

He really should just include an idiot proof way to switch the JRE the game uses. A really simply script or GUI app would do just fine.

Sure it could use whatever JRE you have installed on your system, but dropping the new version into starsector/jre/ isn't idiot proof enough?

More idiot proof than a script that runs and asks them which one of X JREs they want to use, with a recommendation? Yes. :)

So I restarted with the Afflictor, and stock it was pretty poo poo. I much prefer my phase lance Wolf.

I've modified it a bit now and it's good-ish. Slow though.

Did someone say there was a variant with a phase lance?

Backov

Is there any way to tell in the enemy fleet display what class of ship each entry is? Some are obvious, but some aren't. I can't always tell the difference between a cruiser and a battleship/big rear end carrier/whatever.

Also, in the details screen - same deal. Is there any field that says what hull size a ship is? It's often obvious, but it matters for stuff like burn bonuses.

The other day I saw a couple wolfs for sale in a dock, so I bought them, gave them my default fitout (Phase Lance, Tac laser, etc.) and it was good.

Then I noticed in combat they were behaving strangely, not firing their weapons at all. They were in fact aggressively bumping into things with their shield.

Turns out I forgot the "gave them my default fitout" step, and they were completely unarmed for 3-4 fights. Good AI, still trying to contribute.

On a somewhat related note:

Anyone notice what appears to be a bug with autofire? My Medusa has everything but the phase lances on autofire, and occasionally the autofire groups just stop firing. I assumed the first few times it was battle damage, but if I manually switch to the weapon group, they'll fire. If I turn autopilot on, they'll fire. In fact, fixing it is as simple as turning autopilot on for a bit, then taking control back - they start working again.

Is there a visual indicator on your HUD when one of your weapons is out of commission?

So this playthrough I've been buddying up to BRDY.

I bought an Imaginos first. That thing is crazy. Not sure it's effective, but it's a hell of a lot of fun to watch it zip around, noisily teleporting and sending lightning bolts (which mostly tend to hit my frigates.)

Then just last night I bought a Nevermore. It seems like a lot of fun as well. I've fitted it with what I could scrounge up, which was kind of poo poo. It's got Scalaron repeaters in its energy slots, which make a lot of noise and spray poo poo everywhere but don't seem to do much.

The antimatter lance seems cool, but underpowered. IIRC, it does about 2x the damage of an antimatter blaster. Doesn't seem to make sense for a big spinal mount weapon on a cruiser.

I'm going to experiment with some different loadouts for it. Phase lances and hellbores? Blasters? Railguns or needlers in the small slots? The ferrosomethings I have in it now are pretty underwhelming.

Oh, and Rhon lasers are amazing. How did I miss those gems?

So, I jumped a very small Templar fleet for the first time today. 2 destroyers(?), 3 or 4 frigates and a couple fighter wings.

They killed all of my frigates except for the Brawler (so 9/10 casualties), and gave me and the other 2 medusas and the Desidinova that I deployed a hard time.

First frigate died within seconds to 8 Clarents or something ridiculous.

Lesson learned: Holy crap. No frigates in Templar fights, I guess?

Backov
Mar 28, 2010
So I bought a Knight last night. What a disappointment. Really hosed up weapons layout, lots of small mounts, no large. Going to sell it.

I've been wanting to try the Asura and the Stenos but haven't seen them for sale. What's another fun/good cruiser/battleship to try out? The Karkinos is obviously on the list.

Got a Nevermore?

I had one, and bought another due to lack of good other options. However, I am a little underwhelmed. It's probably the way I've fitted it. Can someone share a good fit?

I don't fly it, too slow - but the AI flies it like a grandmother. It will get up to 30% flux, get the target venting and then back off and vent itself. When I fly it, I'm too aggressive and end up overloading it. :) The issue seems to be for me that if I stay close and overload/force the guy to vent, I can't follow up. The weapons just aren't dishing enough damage, or they're too flux inefficient. Probably my fit, as I said.

The sweet spot for me, and it's OH SO SWEET, is the Asura. Holy crap that thing is amazing. I've got 2 Rhon lasers I found mounted on it, and the rest much easier to find stuff, and it just eats everything. The only time I have problems is when I overextend and overload, or am unable to uncloak because the enemy has put 100 missiles into the space I am occupying.

Love the gimmick where it gets faster when phased. Amazing ship. I'd rather have two more of those than the Nevermores.

Backov

I've got my Desidinova fitted with a Rhon in the front laser turret, and a Longinus in the rear. It's very, very effective. I do have to hit and run a bit though.

Backov
Mar 28, 2010
So the Onslaught is really sick. I went into a battle with my 2 Nevermores and one 00-Nevermore, plus 3 decent destroyers. We did well against everything except the onslaught, which sucked up a truly ridiculous amount of punishment, and took out my 00 and one of the other Nevermores.

Also, I bought (but haven't flown yet) some big rear end BRDY capital that freezes time or something. No idea if it's any good.

The Starsector launcher has always listed mod version number after the name. But sure, I could start doing that.

Generally not in the launcher when I'm trying to determine if I need to download a new version of a mod because the version has incremented.

Now, Capital chat.

So, after a long drought of no one anywhere in my Nexerlin game selling any capitals, they all popped at once. I bought a Conquest first, the another one (the only other capital I found at the time.) Then an Onslaught, Victory and Karkinos. Even though I loved the Conquest before flying these other ships, I was embarrassed at how bad it actually was when it went up against the other 3.

Then I brought them back to my base and fitted them all as well as I could. The Onslaught took second place, easily beating the Karkinos, but the real winner is the Victory. What a ship. Those main guns are amazing too. Love that thing. Is that a Sindrian Diktat ship? Vanilla?

Haven't got to fly the Paragon yet. It's got a hell of a tank, but my Victory still eats them.

Yes, both of those things have the version number. What doesn't is the zip file, so I don't know which one I have. When I open up my starsector downloads directory, every single one of the files in it (except BRDY) has a version number, so I can quickly make sure that the files I've got are the most recent ones in the list (like in the Nexerlin or SS+ file lists.)

Rooks are really useful if you're going for frigate spam, as they can keep a decent fleet in action for a surprisingly long campaign.

When you can fill a pair of super-freighters with of loot from a handful of fights within 2 mins of each other and still have 100% CR frig fleet, you know there's something good going on with the Rook.

Sounds good - the problem is I've never seen one (or a Castle) for sale! :)

Also - super freighters with a frigate fleet? So you've got a frigate fleet with 4-5 burn? Eww.

So, I'm playing Nexerlin, and I start as my own faction. It's a bit weird, but hey, new thing.

As usual, there's not a lot of good targets of opportunity around, so I start picking on independents. No problem. I go off and start building my fleet.

It seems that was a bad idea - apparently if you include the Prism Freeport in your game, independents are pretty strong. I only got my fleet up to 3 destroyers+escorts before they had wiped out my only planet. Taken out by indies. How embarrassing.
