I've started playing and built up a decent fleet, but I'm still using what is essentially the same Apogee from the beginning of the faster start with the only modification being swapping out the Mining Blaster for a Tachyon Lance. I'm still not confident in my combat and the playstyle of just kiting and sniping with big lasers and trying to pick off smaller ships or help focus down larger ones has been good for that low-skill play. But I'm sure I can make some decent modifications or might want to try a different ship.

I've picked up two Falcon-P, two Ventures, a Fury and a Eagle, all with no D-mods right now. Plus a few misc destroyers and frigates, including three Hammerheads. I wanna turn my fleet into something that can punch deserter fleets but I'm still basically using default / recommended loadouts. The Ventures have been great for surveying but I'm not super impressed with them in combat compared to the other cruisers, but maybe I'm just not noticing their contributions as missile boats.

Basically, how do I build my fleet for mid-game?

Trying to clean up all the chaff from my fleet and streamline it some. Been bringing around a bunch of frigates and destroyers that I've used for hauling some of my junk that aren't efficient for it, I never bring them into battle over my main ships. From what I understand, capital-class fuel tankers and Atlas cargo ships aren't worth the trouble and loss of speed on their own unless you're rocking other battleship sized warships, and the most efficient way to haul cargo is with a few Colossi and Phaetons? Are salvage rigs and shepherds still worth bringing along anymore, is there a specific breakpoint of how many to have?

Picked up a Paragon-class Battleship and this thing shreds. I can send it into domain defense units solo and sit back and drink a cup of coffee while it kills everything taking zero damage.

Also something I've noted is that raiding pirate bases in the core worlds is absurdly profitable and nearly risk-free. Whenever you're doing business there, if you have 100 marines or so just stop by what ever pirate stations are there and take their lunch money. I stole hundreds of recreational drugs from one pirate station, sold it on the black market for over $300k to another pirate station, and then robbed that station of about $50,000 worth of supplies I would have had to purchase from somewhere else.

If you have the cargo space you can even grab like metal and domestic goods, it's not worth much individually but one pip of your marines can take like $15000 worth of the stuff and it's usually unguarded. I lose like 2 marines, the rest of my marines get better, and I'm in the core worlds so there's always someplace for me to sell the stuff nearby.

Considering making this colony a free port so I can start making fat stacks of drug money. How do you tell when it is or isn't a good idea, and if I make one colony a free port should I make them all free ports? I have three different colonies all in the one system.

Fleet looking spicy, is there such a thing as overkill in this game? I also have like three Colossi, 4 Hammerheads, a Medusa, a couple Salvage Rigs and some Phaeton tankers. I rarely ever bring my whole fleet to a battle and don't have the deployment points to, but I heard that having more ships gives you more deployment points in a fight anyways.

I've been telling my cruisers to escort my Paragon battleship for most of the big battles I've gotten in. Just put literally everyone on escort duty.

It's working out okayish, I think there are times when they try to soak damage for the Paragon when it's doing fine and can take the hits instead, or they're reluctant to finish something off because they'd stray too far from their objective, but overall it's kept the fleet tight.

If I sell all my duplicate blueprints to the open market at my own faction, who gets to use them? No one? Independents? ...Pirates? :ohdear:

what's the best way to set up your faction's fleet composition? I can't seem to find any guides on it, and how to prioritize officers vs. fleet size, or what ships are best to promote to use.

I like the idea of having Doom cruisers set up since I have the blueprints, but it's more important for me to try to set it up so that my faction can handle raids and expeditions with minimal or no support so I can go do whatever I want instead.

Also, I take it that your fleets are permanently stuck in their own system and can't ever be used offensively?
