Arquinsiel posted:Another common thing in autism is having silly good hearing. I've regularly had hearing tests where the person giving it to me had to check the machine because I was hearing stuff I wasn't supposed to, but I was at a wedding this weekend and I spent most of it smiling and nodding. Couldn't hear poo poo over the random three word chunks of other conversations. I have that too. Turns out, we physically hear a wider range of noise than we process. The brain is supposed to filter out stuff on the extreme high and low end, ignore the really quiet stuff and let you focus on one noise source at a time if you try. Autism fucks with that. I hear all noises, all the time, and I can't prioritize. I can't handle even moderately crowded spaces without hearing protection and something visual to focus on. The one time I went to a crowded festival I hit sensory overload so bad that I needed someone to lead me out - I couldn't think coherently enough to make my way through the crowd on my own and could barely verbalize the need for help.

It's really more of a catch all term than a specific thing.

I mean, the unvaccinated ARE less likely to be diagnosed with Autism... Because they never see a Doctor and are beaten into masking any obvious signs.

I'd like to thank this thread for reminding me that the sensory overload facet of autism being described here was used as a form of mental illness in the rpg Mutant City Blues.![]() Yes, in an rpg about being a mutant cop in a world where there's x men everywhere, going down certain character builds gave you autism. It's OK though it's an ancient game from... 2008. Oh.

Uhh, you forgot the other reason unvaxxed kids don't get autism diagnoses: They die of easily preventable diseases before they met someone who actually cares about them.

DACK FAYDEN posted:fun fact that I have posted elsewhere on these forums before: this is called Auditory Processing Disorder and it has common comorbidity with being on the autism spectrum I've had this since I was a teenager. In loud environments speech turns to gibberish, and when someone yells right into my ear to try to be heard it's just loud gibberish. It's one of the reasons that I never developed a social life. I replaced a VIP's laptop and asked for them to bring the old one to work so that I could prepare it for ewaste. They brought it in this morning, just in time for an ewaste pickup. I replaced their laptop in June of 2024.

On the accent thing, you have to give the recruiter the benefit of the doubt here. If a thick accent can muddy verbal communication then that's something that should be noted. It's not racism to say, this candidate has a thick accent and that could impact communications. It's ultimately up to the hiring team if that's a deal breaker or not. It shouldn't be nowadays for most jobs, like you say, there are other forms of communication which wouldn't be affected. But if the only way for that employee to do their job involves oral communication then it has a risk built in. Now uh if uh you say uh before uh every few uh words then uh I'm going to uh pick up on that and uh not be able to uh focus on what uh you are uh saying. joebuddah posted:I hate power apps. I spend more time waiting for solution deployment / the editor to load than I care to admit. I have a hunch that Microsoft's team that is making the power platform of today and the team that made the original power platform are completely different. Solution deployment shouldn't be an issue if you are using patches though.

I don’t think the recruiter - or anyone here - is intentionally being racist and said as much! But we mistake “merit” for “effortless to work with” and they are not at all the same thing. Yes, you must work harder to understand someone with a thick accent. But it is worth spending that effort and time. Unless the primary function of a job is verbal communication, I do not believe one’s accent should be a factor at all in whether or not someone gets hired. Even in this conversation it is implicitly treated as a demerit. It absolutely takes more effort and time to understand someone with an accent. That influences their ability to speak and to be understood. But we the listeners should put in that time and effort. It is beneficial to hear the perspective of others, and it is a very small step we can all take as part of building a more egalitarian and inclusive society. Penalizing people in interviews for having (different) accents means excluding them from jobs and career opportunities. Other people deserve to have jobs and career opportunities. People know this (EDIT: I should say, this is obvious once made explicit), but do not fully internalize that that's what they're doing.
