This pissing me off daily: voip changeovers.

Our MSP is supporting a client going through a VOIP upgrade right now and it's a shitshow nightmare of the highest order, I field calls daily with irate end users, today alone one guy has called 4 times about the same issue, has fought my troubleshooting every step of the way and flat out told me he refuses to do anything because, it worked fine prior to the changeover it should work fine now and the tech that was out there completing the changeover needs to come back and fix it.

Now it's not this guys fault that his poo poo is hosed and it's not my fault, a huge part of the problem is poo poo project management that poorly planned and poorly executed this, but drat it work with me because I'm trying to help you and yelling/bitching/complaining/threatening is not going to get this fixed faster and just ruins my drat day.

My professional opinion is that what happened wasn't this guy's mistake, and you shouldn't treat it as though it is. You have an IT environment where patient data that you are legally liable for underneath federal law is being allowed to be saved to locations where it is not auditable and not being backed up. In what hosed-up bizarro universe does this get to be a single person's fault? You don't even seem concerned about the lack of auditing, so what other HIPAA mandates is your company completely loving up and slacking off about?

You should be treating legal as an ally in this case. Understand the underlying causes of this issue -- which, as far as I can tell, do not at all involve this guy doing his job the exact way he was instructed -- and use the pressure from legal as incentive to implement better solutions. Your network drives should be mapped at logon. You should not allow patient data to be saved to local drives. This should all be covered in documents and training sessions co-sponsored by IT and legal that explain everyone's duties under federal regulatory requirements.

The only thing I will say is that the guy SHOULD have backed up the HDD to some sort of network share before the re-image, but I still wouldn't place the blame on this fellow or the new guy that had zero training and oversight.

Angerfist is good if you like extreme hardcore stuff, I used to listen to them a bit, it's not really a get up and dance type of music for a club though. He was rated #34 on the top 100 DJ list which is kind of weird considering I didn't think stuff that hardcore was popular. Honestly I'd recommend listening just to say you've done it, I recommend Maniac Killa, Raise Your Fist, and Your World Will Shiver (I think this is the song I'm thinking of). Also the korsakoff angerfist song Unleash the Beast is awesome. Korsakoff in general is pretty good hardcore

Since it's live and advertised as being a specific genre, that's what I do. In this case happy harccore which is mostly from the 90s, has speeds of 165-195bpm and tends to contain pianos, cheesy uplifting vocals and the good old 909 kick drum.

Rather different to modern hardcore, such as the Angerfist stuff described above, so it does my head in when some gently caress asks for Angerfist.

Angerfist isn't happy hardcore, it's just hardcore, completely different ebb and flow to the music. Although hardcore has a wild variation even within itself, Angerfist is some of the more hardcore stuff you can find, but then you get stuff that people like Caffeine mix that is hardcore, but much lighter by comparison.

Sufficiently off-topic at this point, where's the bitching?

poo poo that pisses me off, cancerous co-workers. We have a guy that left one of our sites offline for 2.5hours after he took a call from them. Their server was fine somewhat, we have a server there to replace the current one and just needed to swap drives and stuff, so he told them to power off the old server, plug the new one in and wait for a callback from one of our level 2s. Well, he never noted anything in our tickets, forgot which site it was, so 2.5hours later when they called wondering wtf is going on we finally figured out who it was and got them up and running again in 20-30minutes after swapping drives over and rebuilding the arrays.

This guy has been a problem for a while, has repeatedly been told to immediately speak with someone else when issues like this and other "higher level" issues come up. He does not do this and has repeatedly caused issues to drag on for hours longer than they should.

Pretty sure he's getting fired over this today.

With both the old and new setup we have universal printing (print to one queue, swipe access card on any printer to collect) and something about this in combination with PDFs on the HP printers resulted in about 2ppm if you were lucky. What the Ricohs manage by comparison is like going from travel by horse to travel by Concorde.

Printers are fine as long as you aren't using lovely personal printers. When you have the nice MFPs from Ricoh etc with service contracts printers are great. I supported 20+ of these Ricoh MFPs, rare was the day where the printer was the cause if it not working (aside from obvious hardware faults that we could invoke our service contract for), more often it had to do with server2003/2008 causing issues and something needing restarted etc.

Most of the printer hate is because of the personal printers people have to support

Wait, what? Who the hell decides the ends of a drop don't need to be named the same?

I get that people come up with bizarre drop labeling schemes, but to not label the endpoints the same thing makes for all kinds of crazy.

I once ran into a scheme where some guy somewhere took a floorplan with the drops indicated and scrolled down it with a straight edge, labeling each drop as he moved the ruler down the page. So drop 1 was at the top left of the paper, drop 2 was at the top center of the page and drop 3 was at the top right, etc.

It made sense in theory, but the problem was that the floor was broken up into suites that led to different wiring closets. So each closet had a seemingly random number sequence.

You know, if I could tell you who does it, they would be dead already and I'd be in jail, but it happens daily. I'll also end up with half good half terrible number schemes where they started with 1, 2, 3, but then switch to frontoffice1 or something dumb, guess what the patch is always labeled? 1-24! Time to play magical cables and checking the switch (hopefully the guy I am talking to understands link lights) so I can figure out what goes where, god forbid if they have a bunch of extra cables running from patch to switch so like 10 things have no link lights.

This not pissing me off: My company has moved me to a WFM project headed up by our lead PM (the owner's son) for our largest account, I've been creating/executing the test plan, assisting with T2 issues, and other misc things that pop up such as bringing up issues that aren't a part of our testing (features that already were handled in previous project, but randomly have broken etc). This has been a huge boost to my morale, I felt (rightfully so) that my 'drive' and technical ability was being underutilized as a T1 call center agent, and I've been rewarded! They dumped me into the project to take over for my brother, who was the test lead. The last month has been hectic as loving poo poo because I got dumped into this work about 2 weeks before our first go-live (we're rolling out over 2300+ remote locations and should be done by the end of december) and it's been crazy getting up to speed with everything, scope of project etc. Finally, today, is my first day where I'm not feeling very overwhelmed and have a good grip on the project, what work I can/should do, how to do it quickly etc etc.

things kind of pissing me off: The PM I'm under, while extremely intelligent, with lots of experience and generally a good head on his shoulders, can be a bit spastic. He will tell me to do something because it's on his mind, but doesn't really care about it actually getting done. Not a big deal, I've kind of figured out how to prioritize stuff now that I've been here a little. Then, on big things I know he Wants Done, he won't give me specifics of how he wants it done, so I'll take a guess because he's got a ton of crap going on so I can never catch him for 5-10minutes of "show me how you want this done once and I'll do it like that forever" session, and he won't respond to my email requests asking for clarification. Basically I'll do Thing however, then when I turn it up to him, we'll sit for an hour, while he looks it over and then he will just re-do the thing how he wants it.

tl;dr new position, no more t1 call-center crap (hopefully forever), with minor annoyances like a PM with ADHD

Does anyone here administer an environment that uses SEP/SEPM/LUA? I'm finding it hard to get decent answers from their "support" and their community forums range from barely comprehensible to answering questions I didn't even ask.

We are going to be in the process of shifting versions of SEP, currently we have 2 version out there, 11.0 and 12.1 RU4. I want our LUA to start downloading 12.1 RU5, but the LUA server doesn't have enough space for all 3 defs (don't get me started on why a production server has ONLY A loving 120GB HDD in it). My plan is to test download 11.0 and 12.1 RU5 only in our QA environment and figure out space requirements from there.

Now, if I delete 12.1 RU4 from our distribution and download center, will it purge those definitions? Basically, since space is an issue, we can't hold all 3 defs at once and I want to know if it's going to get rid of those defs so automagically or if I'm going to have to do some fuckery to get rid of them from our LUA and also our SEPM server.

poo poo pissing me off - Symantecs Live Update Server, if the server it is on runs out of disk space during anything it tries to do anything (download or push out definitions) it will decide to no longer push out AV updates, but it will happily tell you that it works fine. This is also a problem because 15 or whatever the gently caress years ago that this server got installed it was installed with 120GB of space (don't ask about the small size it's a loving nightmare and we can't expand it at all). Everything we do with a performance impact (full virus scans, backups, etc) happens overnight when no one is using the system.

Yeah we have AV scans scheduled for sunday nights (like 10pm) when people should be in bed/with family/whatever that is not work. If you are working, well, deal with it.

I had someone pull this on a project I'm working on, he claims he updated a shitload of changes (he's our client) and that they've disappeared because I was also working on the same document and I must have hosed it up. My manager publicly sided with him and told me in private he knows that the guy just didn't do the work required of him. I just did the work since it was like an hour or two only but jesus if you're lazy/incompetent/whatever don't try to drag me down with you fucker.

*edit* when I say my manager publicly sided with him, he asked me to go through the revision log and look for the changes and update the current document with them. I looked for about 10 minutes and realized it was a waste of time and just did the changes to the recent document myself.

I dont understand, does he wanted it printed then emailed to him ??

He apparently wants it printed, in color, emailed to him, notified of the email, and then he's going to strip the color from it.

Our helpdesk are functionally useless, the team-lead doesn't manage the team in any way whatsoever, and the guy who is supposed to be the escalation point from them dodges every single issue that it's possible to dodge, whilst adding nothing remotely helpful to the process.

They claim they are understaffed (they get maybe 30 tickets a day between 3 of them) but have no metrics to prove it because they can't be bothered to set their ticketing system up in a meaningful way, and when they gently caress up covering each others holidays they  to engineering that they need to borrow staff, so people with better poo poo to do end up fielding password reset calls.

Jesus christ if you don't want to manage your team then get the gently caress out of the way and let someone else do it.

Jesus, what helpdesk does 30 tickets a day, whenever I see people come up with that I honestly don't understand what these people get paid to do. Our helpdesk is a total staff of 20-25, we are not a 24/7/365 but pretty drat close, deals with an avg of 700 NEW tickets a day while also following up on other tickets, project work, etc etc etc.

What the gently caress do some of your helpdesks do that THREE people are needed to handle 30 tickets a day?

*EDIT* I guess this is why the term computer janitor is what helpdesk is often referred to as, but I just never thought that it was true, our helpdesk definitely handles t1-t2 application/hardware issues.

Just had a new experience that many of you most likely have had, my team-lead sent out an email last night regarding work for a project she (literally) just assigned to me and a few other people.

This morning the PM sends out an email about the business leveraging new resources to further efforts and continue momentum blah blah blah.

Dude sounds like a douche and my team-lead (whom is NOT one to insult) said as much immediately after seeing the email.

It's hard to find good PMs. This guy sounds like he's a newly minted MBA who has no idea what his actual job is. The job of a PM is to coordinate and manage expectations. It is not to update excel documents and forward emails from Team A to Team B. The PM should be evaluating whether or not Team A's concerns are within scope and addressing why it wasn't part of a requirements document, and who missed that req in the first place, and... Most PMs suck.

Grammar sidenote: "whom" is an object pronoun. You can and should use it if you would use him, her, or us. You shouldn't use it otherwise. You can substitute it with a non-interrogative pronoun to see if it sounds right. "him is NOT one to insult" -> don't use whom.

This isn't always intuitive, because English has rules even if we mostly say it doesn't as native speakers, so "To him did you send the ticket?" sounds wrong but "Did you send the envelope to him?" is fine. Same bit as above applies "to he" is obviously wrong, "to him" is right, -> "to whom".

Oh I know what a good PM is supposed to do, my brother is a great PM and I learned a great deal from him.

Also thanks for the minor english lesson, I'm generally pretty good about who/whom I honestly don't know why I used it there, but whatever.

I'm not going to disagree with you, but my financial security issue is not really for myself as much as my parents. They're old and don't work anymore and made their own bad decisions. I've been sending them money to help them stay afloat and before too long they won't be able to take care of themselves. That's why I need to get that money. Things could fall apart for them very quickly and I need to be standing by to bail them out.

In speaking to the CEO's assistant it turns out that the MSP went ahead on their own initiative with an IP scheme change I had in the works and it wreaked temporary havoc at the HQ. The MSP's CEO (also their head tech) was there and I guess he didn't come out of it looking too good. Normally I only do those things after hours but they did it Monday morning!

The bosses freaked out and brought the I.T. Manager in from our biggest location who couldn't help much because he doesn't know anything about HQ or system wide I.T. He only knows his location. Poor guy. I called him today to talk about things. I don't want him to wind up invisible like I was.

Don't help anyone, let them up the creek without a paddle, they'll still come out just fine in the end (honestly they're not a trading firm so having network issues isn't going to destroy them and cause them to lose literally millions of dollars in a second) and perhaps they will learn something about keeping talent instead of abusing it.

So I start tearing into this HP system looking to troubleshoot a video card problem, and I'm looking at this machine thinking that they really over engineered this thing. I get and understand airflow and stuff, but drat this thing is heavy with all the plastic internals and poo poo. Hell, there are fans dedicated to certain parts of the case. What ever, unplug this, undo that, chuck the video card (which was huge and heavy for a quadro) into the box with the paper and static bags piled up in case I needed them, aaand I get to hear my boss squeal like a stuck pig. After he caught his breath and I stopped bug eyed staring at him he managed to croak out that I had tossed a $4k something card around.

OOPS.

It still worked, the main issue was resolved by re-seating the card itself as a replacement card had no issues working on the system. And here I thought all the stuff we had in here was sub bargain bin specials. Would have helped if I tried to understand what the system was actually for and how important it was, but all I could think about was fixing the problem and all the steps I would take to make sure the problem was resolved. bleh.

Honestly, in my opinion, if someone handed me a desktop machine, I would assume at most it's worth 400-800 unless otherwise noted, I don't mean that I would beat it up and poo poo, but I wouldn't treat the machine like it was worth $4000+ unless explicitly told that it was $SUPERIMPORTANTEXPENSIVEHEAPOFSHIT$$$$$

Although I've never worked anywhere that has engineers/graphic artists/movie developers etc on staff.

Anyone else "working" today, but really doing nothing? Working from home advantage, I didn't even wake up until 11:30 (and no one cares).

I foolishly drove into the office, a co-worker and I are here, he's working on a password manager upgrade, I'm reading the forums... I also passed him some documentation on renewing an IIS cert, so I was somewhat useful.

I've had 3 tickets that I can feasibly do right now and I have another that I will take care of later tonight at like 8-9pm. I should have just WFH
