I was really struck in this episode by how well Rhys Ifans managed to copy Sherlock's body language.

The reveal of Joan and Mycroft hooking up was out of left field (you'd think Sherlock would've picked up on it sooner), but Sherlock's reaction to whole thing was perfect. Total "nice guy best friend" type all the way.

I'd agree that Ifans and Liu don't have any romantic chemistry on screen, which is fine for a one-night stand, but hopefully they don't drag it out. I am glad they moved Mycroft to NY, though, because Ifans and Miller have excellent chemistry and there's a lot of mileage left in the estranged brothers angle. Their scenes together in this episode were great. Love the way Mycroft portrays being noticeably less smart than Sherlock, but still smart enough to kind of hang in a battle of wits, and his main advantage is being better socially-adjusted as an adult. In that respect I guess, you can see where he'd have a lot in common with Joan. I imagine Moriarty will be involved in the family drama eventually.

Maybe Joan is part of the group of people who think British guys in the vein of Alan Rickman are attractive because of the voice (because other wise yeah, I'm not seeing it either.)

The heart wants what the heart wants.
Sign me on as someone who was really confused. I thought Joan was uncomfortable because she knew Mycroft was sick and didn't tell Sherlock about it, and she made up the sleeping with him thing as a plausible story for discomfort that he would believe because he is a baby about these sort of things. If it's true that's really weird because they have like, negative chemistry on screen.

I think in the books Holmes even states that Mycroft is far smarter than him and the implication is that Mycroft is the main power behind the British government.

Yeah, there's one or two times he has to go to Mycroft for help when he can't figure something out. And Mycroft is literally a human computer who keeps track of all the functions of the government.

"Occasionally he is the British government [...] the most indispensable man in the country."
"The conclusions of every department are passed to him, and he is the central exchange, the clearinghouse, which makes out the balance. All other men are specialists, but his specialism is omniscience."

He's just absolutely lazy as hell and only wants to hang out drinking at his club.

Personally, I like the Restaurateur version the show is pushing. But considering what they did with Irene Adler/Moriarty I wouldn't be surprised to see them going for a twist with Mycroft.

I kind of liked that Joan/Mycroft sleeping together came out of nowhere. I think most other shows would have made some kind of awful love triangle out of it, so I like that this show continues to avoid any and all sexual tension/awkwardness between Holmes and Watson. Same thing with Sherlock sleeping with Watson's friend in the earlier episode. It's just something that happens and because these two aren't ~secretly in love~ with each other, there's no drama to be had there so instead they can just skip to the reactions.

I didn't mind the Joan/Mycroft thing because it's been established she's not seeing anyone, hasn't for a long time, and Holmes often encourages her to go out and have sex. Just because you might not think that Mycroft is a catch doesn't mean that he isn't exactly Joan's type. Not that I think he is, I think it was more like what she said it was. She had been on her guard and he won her over by being nice and concerned about Sherlock (and the brush with death/leukemia) and she was in London for the first time and leaving soon and wouldn't be seeing him again. Add a couple glasses of wine and an accent, Mycroft basically would have to be a moron not to score with Joan.

So yeah. Didn't bother me. And Rhys Ifrans or whatever his name is isn't that bad looking.

I've never actually seen someone who looks like they had their face smashed in with a hammer decide "hey, you know what, I think I'll try and make myself as ugly as possible by then having a horrid haircut and then adding the worst moustache known to man."

I don't mind the premise of Joan and Mycroft sleeping together, but good God they have no chemistry on screen and it makes the whole thing really tedious to watch.

Yeah, Holmes is to Mycroft what Watson is to Holmes. In the stories Holmes dislikes his brother because he refuses to utilise his talents except in rare times of crisis, when he is paid fees so exorbitant that he never has to do any other work.

I like that Mycroft's restaurant is called Diogenes - Mycroft's club was the Diogenes Club, and was unique in that it was a club for gentlemen to visit when they wished to be antisocial - and that he's lazy enough that all he wants to do is go to it even though he's talented enough to run the kitchen.

I was hoping it'd be genuine too, since it was such a good way to give some really weird private cases. We've had some already, yeah, but they were all ultimately police business too.

And since it's going to be undoubtedly be overlooked for the Mycroft stuff, I looked up (Swedish) Moose Cheese out of curiosity. Stuff costs $500/lb, which is pretty nuts.

claws for alarm
When Mycroft was first introduced I thought it was strange that they didn't make him as smart or even smarter then Sherlock, and that he was a chef/restaurant owner, instead of working for the government, which is what he was in the stories, I think. It had occured to me that it could be a cover story, but that it was more likely that they just changed his character in this adaptation. My first guess might not have been wrong.

He said something along the lines of "My gambit didn't work, Sherlock didn't go for it/buy it. Father and him haven't talked in ages so I doubt they'll catch on to what I did. We may have to find another answer to our problem."

Basically a big crazy reveal that Mycroft's been planning something this whole time and the whole thing about their dad disowning Sherlock was just a ruse because he's trying to get Sherlock to come back to London for some reason.

Wonder what made them go for a London phone number with "412" in it? "555" would work just as well (I'd thought we're only using 7XX and 8XX but it looks like 3XX is getting some use too)
