When Mycroft was first introduced I thought it was strange that they didn't make him as smart or even smarter then Sherlock, and that he was a chef/restaurant owner, instead of working for the government, which is what he was in the stories, I think. It had occured to me that it could be a cover story, but that it was more likely that they just changed his character in this adaptation. My first guess might not have been wrong.
