So after getting stuck in Lost Alpha due to a glitch (namely, that the game CTD whenever I come within 500 meters of the sin guy I have to deliver documents to) I decided to put it down and wait for the next patch. Instead I picked up Misery 2.1 for the very first time!

I booted it up, decided to get into a tussle with some snorks and was immediately killed in 2 hits. Alright, let's avoid them. Got to Skadovsk and took the anomaly quest from Beard. Managed to slip into the ship, grab it and meet up with the bandits that wait for you outside. Got into a firefight with them, dying probably a dozen times before finally managing to kill them all without suffering any grievous damage. Looted their corpses and ran back to Skadovsk where I promptly dropped dead as I walked through the door because the artifact was irradiating me and I neglected to buy any sort of artifact container. Reloaded and sprinted again, hurriedly giving Beard the artifact before spending around 30% of my cash buying cigarettes to chain smoke in order to get rid of the radiation.

Basically what I'm saying is vanilla Stalker games slap you in the face for making stupid decisions. Misery, on the other hand, will break a bone for each mistake you make and then call you a bitch for not manning up and continuing anyway. I loving love it :allears: but I can totally see why it would turn some people off.

Also, is there any moderately cheap way for me to repair my heavily damaged (~45% durability) armor and headgear or am I honestly just better off buying new ones? I like the whole new repair system they've set up but I really wish I'd known about it when starting cuz I let my gear get 9 kinds of hosed up before I realized how difficult repairing it would be.

i kind of had it figured as an mid-90's engine from the start due to how blocky the level layout was but goddamn, that looks absolutely spectacular.

Also, just occurred to me; Do "flatness" upgrades for weapons improve damage as well or is that misremembering something? I figured it's boosting bullet velocity, should probably improve damage a bit so...am I wrong?

Goddamnit when are they going to patch LA? i want to play it damnit!

So I've been hanging around the Cordon, Garbage, and Bar because it's practically the only places where anything of note happens, ever. Some Dutyers must have had a lovely anomaly detector because I found a three man squad that had walked into a trio of Springboards by the broken rail bridge in Cordon and got themselves nice and squished. The bodies were right in the middle of the anomalies and I couldn't reach them without getting squished myself. Some AI Loner from the nearby farm encampment wasn't as hesitant as I was and tried to loot them.

He briefly cried out for a medkit. I just stood back and watched. He added his gear to the loot pile shortly after. Such is life in the Zone.

Normally after all that drama I'd say "screw it" and move on but something was telling me these guys had a lot of stuff on em, I'd been hearing no end of gunfights for the last several days and I've been coming across a ton of dead bandits and Clear Sky folks. As I couldn't get close enough to the bodies to even check them, I remembered 2 things:

Springboards don't hold bodies in place.

Bullets go right through anomalies.

So, out comes the Protecta loaded with slug shells. 4 shells later, the bodies are clear of the anomaly field and I can loot with impunity. Guns. Lots of guns. Enfields, a SPAS-12, no end of AK variants and enough drugs to take half the Zone through bat country. Oh, and the Loner who was trying to loot? All he had on him was a crappy sawn-off and a half drunk bottle of vodka. He was so close to making it big, too.

Yeah was about to say bullets usually solve getting things out of anomalies--detect artifacts then shoot them clear!

Why did it take me so long to realize the porno mags were helping me repair my gun hahaha. The new bloodsucker AI is amazing and actually made me scream at my computer. I was at a distance trying to spot it with my binocs because they usually decloak at a distance and you can get a good fix on em but no not only did he aggro me but he loving took his time sneaking up on me then uncloaked right in front of me while i was zoomed in. Recently started the original, my first stalker game. This is a lot more combat heavy than I expected, I thought it would be more sneaking around and picking my fights but I can barely walk two feet before getting jumped by packs of bandits. For example, after the fight at the start of the Garbage zone, I got attacked by two guys as soon as I left the guys you help, then after the fight in the hangar, six more as soon as I walked out towards the next objective. Also thought it would be more open world but there's impassable barbed wire fences (which I'm pretty sure I could climb over and I'm not even a STALKER irl) and loading screens all over. I'm getting the hang of it now and starting to enjoy it after turning the difficulty back to the default, not sure why the OP recommends playing on the hardest because I consider myself reasonably competent at shooters and it still took me several tries to beat that first fight in the Garbage on the hardest setting.

Anyway, I was wondering if there's a way to stop my PDA icon from popping up every two minutes with no new info but everything in the Diary section reset to unread status. It's pretty annoying. The only mods I'm running are the community patch and some shaders or something.

Also, is there a mod that will give me a "loot everything except the gun but strip the ammo out of it" button because it's a lot of annoying extra clicking having to manually check every gun for ammo and then drop it to stay under the weight limit.

The original is really lacking a ton of the QoL stuff from CoP but there might be some mods that help. It's kinda open world because the engine is running stuff off screen so you could have friends getting killed in the level you just left but yeah it was very limited but the other ones improve that a ton. Combat is wonky because armor allows you to be a bullet sponge but you'll learn to aim for the head of humanoids and that'll make combat easy. If it's your first time playing stalker i really won't turn the difficulty too high because there's a lot of unique game play that doesn't tie into any other game.

I played the poo poo outta SoC and clear sky but i'd never go back because CoP just had way too many awesome changes. I think someone rebuilt SoC in the CoP engine which would be way more enjoyable.

That's why i like anomaly so much because they have those fine tuning menus that you can change, soon as i got a good suit i changed the damage reduction values.

Does anyone know if the radio sounds in anomaly mean anything? I got an RF receiver just because i thought i was missing poo poo but i can't seem to tune it to get anything when i hear the random radio sounds.

Ugh there needs to be a courier system in anomaly because even with a pure freight build i gotta take multiple fast travels after big fights. My fav was fast traveling to the loner base at cordon which is my home base then being super overloaded with just a pistol encountering a merc hit squad waiting in the adjacent building haha. I thought i could sell off all the gun/armor parts but no! You use them to make upgrade kits not just for repairs!

Arghy

moot the hopple posted:

The RF receiver is for those quests where they ask you to find a missing patrol. You basically go to the location with the frequency they give you and search around, with the signal letting you know you're close as it gets less static-y. You can technically do these quests without the receiver since it just requires you to find some bodies on the map, but it's way easier to stumble across them on smaller maps. Do not take these quests on Darkscape, for instance, it can be like finding a needle in a haystack even with the receiver.

I'm pretty sure you gotta take the quest to spawn the bodies though as that's how most quests work but i'll be wandering through a level then i'll hear radio static which sounds a lot like a prompt to take out my receiver and start scanning but it could just be ambient noise too though. The first RF mission i took was in darkscape haha, it wasn't too bad but i had to clear out the majority of the mutant population trying to find the drat thing.

In anomaly there's a huge gently caress off crafting system where only really a few parts aren't used to make upgrade kits. You gotta find the recipes on dead people then rent the vice and have all the ingrieds. I just got the military top tier combat exo because they keep sending kill teams after me haha but i saved literally 200k in upgrades because i had a huge stash. If you give a repair tech all 3 tools he won't charge you for the vice so you can take your time to find what you need, or be like me and just empty your crafting stash into your inventory before hand haha. The only choke point is the stupid repair kits which can cost quite a bit but they drop too and you'll often save a huge chunk of cash.

I forgot how goddamn radioactive red forest was, now i got a new suit buffed to almost ecologist suits of protection and i'm going to comb the entire back zone for poo poo!

If you start anomaly i highly suggest getting to the bar and using that a central base because the kill teams are annoying as hell when you're crafting up a storm then hear 8 dudes screaming at you from outside hahaha.

Darkscape is just a waste of a map. It’s twice as large as it needs to be, takes forever to walk through, and at least for me in Anomaly the artifacts always seem to spawn underground and screw me out of even getting anything for my trouble.

I would say I go out of my way to avoid it but I don’t—it’s so far off the beaten path that you never have to go there if you don’t want to.

I really like darkscape, meadows, and the truck cementary. You are poo poo outta luck if you're in the open when an emission hits which is great because the other maps have so many shelters you never really worry too much about it. The only problem is they're rather empty and pointless but that can be fixed by just adding content. I love the flatness of truck cementary because you can't really see what's coming so it gets tense as hell. I had an amazing moment where i was hunting 1 blood sucker that turned out to be loving 3 then the frantic sound of gunfire attracted a controller, bandits, then loving snorks. I sat down in terror behind a BTR eating the radiation between fights it was awesome.

I gotta say though the current artifacts i've found all seem really lame or redundant. Those upgrades suit things are far better but maybe there's some really good one's i've yet to find. I kinda like the idea of the raw artifacts being meh where the finished products where people have put them into technology are better.

Getting kinda sick of radar, i'm guessing i wasn't supposed to storm up the road because i've had 3 units of monolith spawn behind me haha. I now have 2 stashes on the road filled with their poo poo but i keep running outta ammo, gonna go consolidate the stashes then go back to get more ammo haha. I have a feeling the forest itself is probably going to be crawling with monolith or i'll eventually be forced onto the road to deal with the same squads. Tempted to do an Mp7+sniper run and leave a shotgun with ammo in the stash so once i cleared to the brain scorcher i could grab my shotgun for the inside stuff.

That misery style crafting and item system can go gently caress itself, along with any mod that implements some poo poo like it.

It definitely could use a QoL pass and a reduction of the number of gun parts, like crafting repair kits from scratch should be far cheaper than buying them vendors. You should also have a crafting chain where you could craft up from some basic elements not rely on things you'd have to buy from the vendor. It would be better if you just dumped everything into the technician and he gave you an extreme discount if you had the correct ingredients.

I still prefer it to CoP's system because while you maybe wouldn't be grabbing entire suits off dead people you should be able to easily salvage parts of it to recreate it yourself from scratch. I also love being able to scrap guns you pick up and choosing the best pieces of them but let's be honest you wouldn't be grabbing trigger assemblies or hammers haha you'd just take the entire loving lower with barrel attached. So get rid of like 4 pieces right there and now you're inventory isn't so cluttered and you can easily make a decision to drop a gun on the ground or scrap it for 1 of it's 2 parts.

Get hosed brain scorcher/radar! Took me 3 stashes and giving up a ton of valuable poo poo like purified water but now i'm finally reclaiming all the loot. It's pretty insane how i've exhausted 4 ammunition types because of monolith but now i'm rocking an SVD + MP7 until i can build up my ammo reserves but the good news is the Alife system is spawning all those monolith back at the power station/PP so they gotta slowly make their way back to redforest so now duty/freedom/ecology can slow start replacing their spawns.

I hope stalker 2 is basically the world rushing into the zone so there's a ton of combat from different forces, it'd be a good explanation for all the human vs human combat. It would be fun also if they tried to nuke the zone then it basically exploded again so the maps could be even bigger.

Arghy
Nov 15, 2012

So don't go to radar in anomaly because monolith will endlessly spawn and after killing enough of them they'll start spawning with loving RPG's haha. Played a fun little game of hoofing 500kg of stash from 1 back pack to another until i had it on the edge of the map, now i get to play a fun little game of bringing 450kg of weight back to my home base of cordon! Haha might just move it all to the bar though since i'm cool with duty and the kill teams will have a harder time spawning on my head there.

I thought clear sky grenades were bad but nope, RPG's sprinkled in really spice up fire fights haha. I stormed the barricade for the 8th goddamn time to kill off the monolith squads and took an RPG to the chest as i did, hey they're learning how to do deal with greedy stalkers walking around in power armor.

Arghy
Nov 15, 2012

Oh so fun fact, toggling fast travel while overburdened means you can be at any loving weight so i literally could have done that entire stash in 1 go. Also clear sky buys the helicopter black boxes if you find any.

Don't be like me doing 15 trips when you can do it all in goddamn 1 go.

Arghy
Nov 15, 2012

I thought about getting a companion but they seem like way to big of a liability. I was doing a rescue mission in the cordon and right at the top of the rookie village i heard a goddamn ambient noise that sounded like a bloodsucker so i was watching for that but apparently 3 military stalkers were wandering a safe distance away at the same time. The guy i was escorting starts shooting at them which in turn drew aggro from the entire check point wiping out the rookie village. I had told him stealth and don't engage in combat but the rookie village has military stalkers with weird scripts that come super close without aggroing.

I've gotten to the point that i'm only taking apart rare guns and keeping new ones i haven't seen before but i'm still ripping apart every single suit because they're filled with good crafting materials. I just carry a plain backpack which weighs less than a kg and during intense areas with tons of loot i just create a stash then load it all inside there. You can't fast travel normally with yellow overload which is absurd so i turned off that rule anyhow so when it's time to go back to home base i just grab the entire stash usually red overloaded then fast travel back without having to make multiple trips.

You don't wanna kill the techs until you give them all tools to get that achievement but even then once you give a single tech all 3 tools they'll let you use their bench for free. Seeing as you get near constant hit squads wandering up on you i'd shudder to use the bench anywhere that's not a safe spawn zone.

RPG monoltih are great esp when you never encountered them before until that time haha. I remember feeling like a badass in my exosuit until my corpse just rag dolls across the map for seemingly no reason. Took me another 2 deaths to realize it wasn't grenades haha.

Yeah the doors very nondescript and easy to miss. It's a drat shame that they made you rush through it because it's a really fun giant area but that's what the mods are for because then you can explore it at your leisure.

I hope in stalker 2 you get more government involvement so it's basically stalkers in the middle of army/mutant/mercs battling it out in waves. You could have monolith lie low then wait until the zones almost full again then turn on the brain scorcher and bam, huge amounts of monolith recruits haha.

Nov 15, 2012

Be warned even with mods clearsky was kind of a mess, i'd just grab a minor overhaul mod then just run through it. It added a ton of new fun maps and redid a lot of the SoC maps which was fun but it wasn't worth the hell of trying to live with the weirdness. I would either do a clean run of it or skip it and go to CoP and play overhaul mods that use all of the maps. A great CS bug is loving homing grenades, legit every loving human enemy has grenades and will be throwing them non stop so the second you stop moving you're dead because even while moving they've tossed on ahead of you and if you don't keep moving it explodes. Think you're sneaking up? Wrong they've seen you and decided to throw a grenade instead of shouting in alarm.

I'm playing anomaly atm which mostly uses CS maps instead of SoC so you get the fun without the jank.

I'm kinda confused what's going on in Clear Sky. I got to cordon, got wrecked by the machine gun post somehow seeing me through trees and long grass and destroying me before I even knew it was there, went back around and took the other way to cordon (great bit of game design there, have the game send the player into certain death and go "lol gotcha should have gone the way the game didn't send you"), got shot at by the stalkers under the bridge as I run down the hill to get past, made it to Sidorovich who reset the stalkers to neutral, got to the stalker base and got missions to take out a bandit camp and a military camp. Did the bandits first and the stalkers took the military objective out by themselves while I was at it. So now I'm back at stalker base with a mission to do the next military objective. Tried to solo it, killed most in a running battle but there's like 6 geared up guys vs me in a bandit jacket, the last one got me and I died. At some point during the fight I noticed on my radar the neutral stalkers under the bridge were hostile for some reason. I reloaded back to the stalker base and now the bridge stalkers are still hostile (pretty sure they weren't when I made the save, don't recall any issues getting to the military objective on the other side) along with half the other random stalkers around the map. The other half are still neutral. Anyone have any idea why they're hostile now? Did their hostility persist through reloading my old save? I noticed NPCs staying in combat mode after reloading saves in SoC so maybe hostility can too. Is killing these guys gonna make the rest of them mad? Am I supposed to wait for a stalker squad to attack the military guys? Because that seems like a really tough fight to solo. Waiting around doesn't sound very fun though.

e: Why are these two military guys sitting behind cover outside the objective blindy firing their guns into the side of a hill?

Hahaha yeah that loving MG nest was a great way to give the player a big finger. The neutral stalkers being hostile might be due to you being so low in rep. Instead of them just all going hostile sometimes a percentage go hostile so it's possible to get it fixed without them all murdering you. Clear sky was them loving with a ton of scripts so poo poo not making sense might just be them trying to be story driven. I personally farmed the swamp until i had a good suit and decent gun before venturing out

What's a "minor overhaul" mod? That sounds like a bit of an oxymoron. I'm kinda vary of playing overhaul mods on a first play of a game. Graphical mods, community bugfix patches etc are fine but like that one you linked doesn't even say what it is and I'm not watching a 45 minute youtube to find out
I started in vanilla then quickly grabbed a community bug fix but minor as in you don't get weird reskins and anime girls running around haha. I figured you wanna just play through the story line.

Anomalies disguise system is so loving awesome haha, grabbed an ecologists suit because i was tired of being 1 shot by anomalies. I put the shoulder patch on while exploring dead city seeing as i don't remember the map and i'd get the drop on any mercs instead of them killing me on sight. I'm exploring this house in the middle of a field and i hear something running but nothings attacked me yet then i started getting shoved so i was in panic mode thinking a mutant spawned inside the house with me. Nope it was just 2 loving exo mercs trying to assassinate me but thankfully my disguise held so i didn't need to reload after having 2 exo suits hit me in a tiny house haha. The Alife script for that is really dumb though because they basically travel invisible through the zone to get to you but thanks to the 45m no spawn bubble you can turn on they'll pop down outside it.

The kill teams should be forced to spawn at the entrance to the map then walk to you instead of spawning outside the bubble then sprinting into your face haha. You can get lucky and not have them instantly aggro in which case you'll have them slowly make their way to you which is awesome because you can get hints as other stalkers call out that a loving monolith squad is in the garbage/cordon for some reason.

*A bonus with the confused kill team was i got a bodyguard of 2 neutral exo suits ensuring that i was safe!

I think clear sky was before some devs left to make metro which is filled with scripted events that suck rear end. I enjoyed the controller behind you in SoC in the agroprom underground because it was supposed to push you into the military base but it got silly on later play throughs when you killed literally everything and it still spawned. I hate games like doom 3, metro, and dead space where there's a ton of scripted events that punish the player that likes to explore. I want to pile the bodies up in a corner knowing i've killed everything then explore at my leisure.

There's a huge expansion to agroprom underground in anomaly and i don't remember where it leads haha. I killed the controller and buerers in that antenna room but didn't have a good enough suit to survive that fire tunnel with the snorks. I recognize clear sky design in it so i'm guessing it was a tunnel to pripyat? I have a nice ruby ecologist suit now so i wanted to explore it but i don't wanna pop out in the middle of pripyat atm considering it's a hellish meat grinder in anomaly haha. Also is limansk really just cut in half like that? I got to the bridge in the middle but i couldn't see a way through it and ran into some invisible walls. I found that tunnel filled with the SIN guys in it and had an amazing fire fight where i ambushed 5 monolith and likely about 9 SIN dudes. I totally forgot about the clear sky story arc haha. Does anyone know how the combat oriented resists work in anomaly? I have an empty and a jellyfish on which all should buff combat related stuff but it doesn't ever go up on the stats. It's the same with the ballistic plates and kevlar inserts. I'd love to see wtf the mods dev was thinking with the armors because some of it makes sense like loner armor in general having more belt slots and being jack of all trades where duty has better stats but less belt slots. You then have poo poo like merc armor being down right better than everything but military/ecologist seem to cap out and lack as much armor diversity. I was expecting a unique top tier armor for every faction but besides the combat exos there's not much.

Yeah i watched a bubble ascend to the sky, not fast just slowly start floating upwards. The AI can grab em outta the ground so if you wanna wait until some hostiles walk by then ambush them. Arghy
Nov 15, 2012

Huh i wonder if that was a CoP think, honestly don't remember haha. In CoP and mods based off that engine they'll pull out detectors and wander into anomalies to get artifacts though on some of the older/community/beta maps they just walk near it and loving steal it haha. A few times i was trying to grab the artifacts before some friendlies did but it just poofs from the screen and they walk away. It's good you're doing it sequentially so you'll see all the improvements because gently caress CoP was such a breath of fresh air.

I'll see if i can find you a swartz mod link for CoP, it was the best non invasive mod because it just changed up some guns and made radiation super realistic. The crafting system makes getting a new suit a breeze by just following around stalkers with the suit you want and hoping they die haha.

drat anomaly really encourages you to explore, wandering the zone making sure i explore each and every location and there's so much goodies just sitting in the open. I might do a replay as an ecologist or maybe military but i don't know how fun that would be with pretty much the entire zone hostile to me haha. Ecologist might be fun to explore every factions story line except for the baddies.
