It's been a while since I played S.T.A.L.K.E.R. of any flavour and I've just been replaying here and there the last week or so. Man, I have missed it, other FPS games just aren't the same. I noticed this thread doesn't have as many tales from the Zone as it used to :( so...

I'm playing Clear Sky complete - probably a very old version at this point - and trying to just catch up to that Fang guy, let him know that maybe, just maybe, the Zone doesn't want him and his friends at it's heart. I mean, some guy told me a faction up and disappeared, just like that. They thought some Monolith at the nuclear plant was worth protecting or would make their dreams come true or some drat thing so they left past the barrier and no-one's heard anything since. I'm far from home and working this gig to stop this Fang guy, maybe talk to his boss Strelok, see if he's convinced it's all a big conspiracy like the recordings indicate.

Honestly, I've found people aren't so bad - everybody's just too busy trying to stay alive, trying to enjoy a camp fire, play some music, drink some vodka, keep the cold - keep the Zone - at bay. Even the bandits aren't so bad, I keep outta their way, they mostly keep outta mine. I talked to their boss, some guy called Yoga. I don't think he really has anything to do with yoga, man is he angry. The others at the base were cool, just don't flash your weapon around like a novice. They play fun music over the loudspeaker and most just want some weed, some booze, a little coin and somewhere to stay in when the emissions hit.

That said, I left the bandit base, took a left (always go left) and tried to take a short-cut back to Cordon. The bandits at the check point held me up, took all my roubles - nearly 20k! :argh: - and made out like they were doing me a favour by not killing me and taking my poo poo. I got them back, though, hosed their plans with some guy called Stringov, even managed to get paid by them to kill him.

So now I'm in some place called Agroprom, after some old college used to be. Duty took it over. As much as all the non-Dutyers give out about Duty, they've been good to me, money in my pocket and nothing too hard. They even have a weapon smith who'll upgrade LMGs! Can you believe it? I've never even seen an LMG in the Zone. Holy poo poo, if I got one of those and an exo-skeleton, man...

Anyway, I went by the Freedom base, the sworn enemy of Duty - just over a hill! Like thirty seconds sprinting! Unbelievable! The Zone man, the loving Zone! They're cool, too. I just try to get on, in all the ways, y'know. So I figured, they have all these dogs over one side of the Freedom base, furthest away from Duty. Them dogs get in a big enough pack, they'll go for anything food. Maybe I take them out, the guys at Freedom base give me a better price for things, maybe let me sit down at one of their fires, swap some vodka and tales. So I get up early, thinking I wake the base up with my Toz. I love that Toz, had it upgraded since forever. Duty gave me a free - FREE! - SPAS to do some poo poo for them but it's heavy and my Toz has much better range and I like the sound, beautiful weapon. So, yeah, I go out with my Toz, gonna destroy the pack.

I gunned two down, the rest started running around. Man, I didn't know there was so many! Out of all the shrubs, behind trees and rocks they started running around, snarling, yelping, barking. I missed the next couple and they ran off a bit so I ran up into their den, climbed a rock so they couldn't get me and started picking them off. Then there's this guy, didn't see him until he was like ten feet away. Poor bastard was walking through to, I suppose, the Freedom base, then he's hip deep in angry dog pack. He got two and then they had him. I didn't have a good shot but I had a good view. Poor bastard didn't even have time to draw his side arm and blow his brains out, just got chewed to death.

Right after, his friends - didn't even see his friends - gunned down most of the rest. The last dog kept trying to fight but it's legs weren't working anymore. Still wouldn't die but couldn't fight, couldn't really move. I walked over and finished it off with my Beretta.

His friends, they didn't say anything to me. Ignored me. All "Hold on men, it isn't over" then it was and they just straightened up and walked off. Left their friend, left his stuff. I don't see why the Zone gets to be the only one that takes so I waited a minute and then searched him. He had some stuff, nothing fantastic. Problem was, according to his PDA, his name was Timor Dogman.

Watch what you name yourself, stalker, the Zone doesn't give notice but it surely takes it.

I grabbed The Faction War because of all the great press it's getting in this thread and I've barely started but Holy poo poo. Went to the train yard with some dudes, got some money, bought a knife a radio and a sleeping bag and gently caress I can't afford a gun. gently caress.

So I agree to find a Wrenched then remember I don't have a detector. gently caress. So I heard over the radio that some guy would be at the abandoned farmstead in the warehouses district flogging a cheap MP5. Turns out his idea of cheap is over three grand more than I have. gently caress. Then I went to the Merc bivouac figuring they might front me a weapon as all I have is a knife so I run the gently caress away from all the wildlife. Nobody was there. gently caress. It's getting kinda late now so I jogged over the hill back towards the farmstead. I stopped at the crest as somebody was firing at something. I start hoping there's a corpse I can loot. It turns out there's a bloodsucker on the prowl. All I have is a knife. gently caress gently caress gently caress.

Then I noticed there's a couple of corpses at the bottom of the hill so I sprinted down to them and looty looty loot loot loot. A couple of MP5s - one upgraded a bit :toot: - a couple of Marthas - one upgraded a bit :toot: - some bullets and a couple of medkits. loving rolling in it, me.

Oh look, there's another bloodsucker. My pistol is in rag order and jams near every shot. The bloodsucker got pissed at me for plinking him so I swap out to the MP5 and burn up most of my ammo. These fuckers are tough. I grabbed tentacles off his corpse and then went back to the initial fight location. Some bastard tries to jack me for stuff that ain't his, I give no fucks what he claims. I told him to get hosed so he dropped me. Such is life in the Zone.

The traders - well, one - started accepting my patches, I suppose it's a standings thing.

I'm a loner these days, traversing the zone on behalf of factions who want poo poo transported or picked up. I rock a Toz for the range, handy as mutants will gently caress you up quick. At one point, I was headed from the train yard to Dark Valley and heard what I thought was a bloodsucker over on my left. I sprinted my rear end over to a camp and hopped up on some crates - can't kill me if you can't reach me, motherfucker.

I turn around to draw a bead on it and see a Chimera 30 feet away and 20 feet up, mid-leap. As it drops to my doom on my head it lets out a Death From Above roar.

I just scooped a G37 in a stash in the Swamps. poo poo all bullets but it has a scope. I'm looking forward to addressing Controller problems now. Them fuckers are lethal. God I love this game.

Erm, I was transporting a 20kg box to Duty from Yantar and Defiance stormed the Duty base in a pro as gently caress fashion (scoped mosin nagants in the towers while a mix of shottys and ARs put motherfucking boots on the motherfucking ground) and now I am stuck with a 20kg box I cannot drop. I have no save that will avoid Defiance storming the gently caress out of Duty. Am I boned?

Bonus hilarity section: After a few attempts to unfuck that situation I noticed I kept passing the shooting range so I stopped in and had a go while Duty got curbstomped. Major Whatsit gravely informed me that I had to use his guns but he'd give me back my stuff after a round of shooting. After the round of shooting, I discover Major Whatsit had absconded with my SEVA suit, my Veles detector, everything except for the PMm I was using and my G37. At least I got the cool black bandit coat.

I'll get around to farting around with ini files at some point but I started a new game and joined Clear Sky because I love the swamp level and well the game is a variant of Clear Sky...

gently caress me, talk about a schizoid mess of :black101: and :downsgun: . I took an early mission to clear out some mutants - 800r - so it can't be too hard, even coming to nightfall. I use my binoculars to lay eyes on prize and approach. A pack of dogs, no worries, there's a high spot nearish if I get swarmed. I plan my retreat to avoid irradiated puddles and such. Everything prepped, I jog in and drop a dog. The other four run at me and IS THAT TWO loving BLOODSUCKERS AS WELL?? loving gently caress. My retreat features a lot less covering fire than I planned and I blew past my high spot due to bloodsucker nearness. Instead, I lead them to the tower just past the fishing hamlet. I sprint up the stairs to the top and pick away at any available targets as the other three dudes at the tower shoot every mutant they can. By some miracle, no-one dies. On the other hand, some random shots appear to have plinked and pissed off a pseudogiant who comes stomping in, sponging a shitload of bullets and shot. It manages to drop a dude and by drop a dude it stomps him into the rickety wooden bridge and pins him there, stomping the poor bastard to goo. Better you than me. Got a crappy kaban out of it, mind. I celebrate by not being able to afford much beyond repairing my toz and armour.

Eventually, I found a crappy but usable scoped mosin-nagant. Oh baby. This thing is ranged death with a wonderful and glorious accuracy lending itself to head shots. On the other hand, I can't find an artifact. Not one. I'm also not bothering with hiring a squad for myself as friendlies, in my experience, get in the way of assaulting enemy positions. I take over Cordon, I clear Dark Valley. I mix and match between a few different sniper rifles depending on what I am shooting and bullet availability. Why? Funny story.

I looted a corpse with an SGI sniper rifle. It's got a longer range scope than my mosin and the bullets are easily available. Fixing it cost way more than I had but I wanted to increase my magazine size so I upgraded. Which cost me the price of fixing as well. I thought that was weird but I could still upgrade my poo poo. So, for the laugh, I upgraded all my poo poo. That put me around 120k in the hole. As it turns out, that means I can't sell or buy or trade anything as I do not have the money for that, just a big rear end debt.

That's right, I can't buy bandages or health packs or ammo, I can just upgrade poo poo, making my debt larger. Fair's fair, I can work with the ammo I have, swapping out guns as needed and I've got health packs out the wazoo. loving bandages, though, I have a paucity of. Currently 8. A good bleeding shot takes a couple if not more. I'm using my extreme range weapons a lot as you can imagine.

I'm slowly, oh so slowly, managing to pare my debt down. Around 55k as it stands. I have stashed a shitload of weaponry that I can sell at the depot the moment my cash flow turns positive. I'll take monster clear-outs and kill missions for steady roubles to reduce the debt and run like a mad gently caress towards any defense of a base on the map as every rouble helps. The first thing I loot is money.

And I still have no artifacts, just vodka and drugs. Such is my life in the Zone.

One thing I always wondered after the C-Consciousness was destroyed is how much of the Monolith is actually aware of what is going on. You get people like Strider and his group who suddenly awake and find themselves in a strange situation, so you've got to imagine there's more of those kinds out there, who may not be as lucky as Strider. They might still be in the heart of madness and suddenly realize that they're aware they're surrounded by a bunch of maniacs, having no idea if they're the same as them, and making an assumption and trying to find out could result in you being killed.

I'm guessing the Preachers are the most devout and believe they can still hear the Monolith speaking to them, but maybe they don't either? Given the reputation the Monolith has it's probably not out of the question that they're all under a mass delusion that they have to continue as they are because "thoughtcrime is death"

It could be an almost Orwellian situation.

Now I'm imagining a Preacher - sort of like the character from Children of Dune, walking the Zone, with his zealot corps, preaching/converting/killing people who will not submit to the will of the Great Monolith. The Preacher guy has a hunk of the Wish Granter he claims was bestowed unto him and they lug around the thing itself on a flatbed dragged by chimeras. It'd certainly spice up certain gigantic areas with not a lot in them.

Things are going very well indeed. I sprinted up behind a tree and drop around ten Mercs with my trusty and tricked out Mosin-Nagant. I wait a few moments, only the one guy in the gatehouse so I sprint up, switching to my SIG 550 (Good enough for Strelok, etc.), pop a grenade in the window and move behind cover. Op success.

There's a build-up of Mercs beside the trains a bit away so I call for back-up, wait a bit and then start again with the Mosin. Between me and the back-up, we drop all who do not run. Fine and dandy. They move forward and I loot the bodies of patches and some ammo and grenades. Hang on, what's that sound? I press F and poo poo, I'm dead, a Chimera landed on my head while looting.
