Dumb question, but I can't play with Misery on Lost Alpha, right? It's a COP only thing?

NeoSeeker posted:In Lost Alpha Do you have to change graphics settings in the user file? They don't save when I exit the game/can't change them using the ingame settings. For me, I had to edit graphics settings, start a game, save, then exit all the way out, for it to get the graphics settings to "stick" but they finally did. I have no idea why.

I have no idea what I'm doing with Faction War. I guess there are these little circle areas scattered around that I can control somehow, but that doesn't seem to be explained anywhere; I also picked up a follower who I have no idea how to command. Tried to join Duty, but I have to do stuff for them first to get them to like me, which is not easy since I didn't start with a gun and even a poo poo gun costs 200 more rubles than I have.

So what do I need to do to increase my max squad amounts? I'm playing as the Mercs, and have Yantar Scientist Camp, the purple point in Yantar (Lowlands w/ Artifacts), all four zones of Institute Building B in Agroprom (the three blue ones and the one split one), and the purple point in northern Agroprom (Old Encampment). But, I still have the same 18 total squads I started with? And I'm spread so thin, there's no way I'm going to able to capture the Duty base, which is my next mission. I can't just pull people from Yantar because the Military and Renegades occasionally spawn there. And if I try to attack the Duty compound, a helicopter tends to come and obliterate me.

Bloodsuckers don't seem too bad in TFW. I killed a pair that ambushed me and my merc homie outside Agroprom, and he got a third somewhere along the way. Upgrading to a pump or semi-auto shotgun seems to really do the trick (6 shells is pretty safe); when you've only got two shots at a time though it's loving terrifying. On the other hand, there was something (I didn't ever see what) that flew through the air and one-shot obliterated me as I was coming up on a camp. Definitely wasn't a Snork, I'm guessing maybe it was a Chimera. I just heard an awful growl, then died basically instantly.

Yeah I put my Merc playthrough on hiatus. It's fun for pure shooting action, but I'm having way more fun as a loner, trying to keep everyone on my good side (except Bandits cause gently caress those guys). Though, that said, Bandits will probably be my next playthrough.

If you have an actual task to capture the point, you can check and see if the task has flipped over to "Hold this position until reinforcements arrive" -- if not, then there's still an enemy threatening it. Once a reinforcement squad leader and his squad make it to the point, then the task should resolve (if not, they either aren't in position yet, or there is still an attacker threatening the point somewhere). The best way to resolve it is to have your personal sidekicks ordered to attack the point -- they should hunt down any remaining enemies or at least give you a general direction in which to look. If you don't have a task yet, it can be tricky, but basically just order them (or your comrade) to attack the point and eventually it should get done, but you may not get a message about it every time.

I thought the light blue ones are the ones that allow more squads to exist, and purple just upgrades the squads.

The readme notes (and my experience playing on Mercs verifies) that they'll use shotguns against mutants. Always have your sidekick carry one, and a couple dozen shells of buckshot as well. They'll also sometimes switch to SMGs at close range. I typically have my sidekick armed with a full-sized AR (in a different caliber than whatever I'm using) upgraded all the way for accuracy, flatness, and damage at the expense of ROF, with a scope, suppressor, and GL (not that they can use the GL). I've seen him switch over to an AKSU upgraded fully for rate of fire, at short range. I have no idea why this happens -- after the battle I checked to make sure he wasn't out of ammo for the primary, and nope. There were 400+ rounds left. The only reason he had it was to take the weight off of me, I was never expecting him to use it. I took it back, and my sidekick managed to pick up one of the UMP-45's of a dead merc at some point, but I don't recall him using it as he didn't pick up any ammo.

Justin Time! posted:Uhm, is there a way to disable the helmet overlays for TFW? Because it looks like helmets are sort of "hacked in" here so I have no idea where to look for the helmet overlay files in the gamedata folder. Do you mean the "make it look like you're looking through the goggles of the helmet" thing? It's a selectable option in the TFW options menu.

Well, playing as a Loner (non-Defiance) is very different than playing as a faction, since as a Loner you won't be instantly at war with literally everyone else on the map.

NeoSeeker posted:I realize this, but when the guys on the tower spot you and go "hey it's THAT bandit guy, he's alright" I don't see why they wouldn't let you in. "Hey, it's THAT Blood, he's cool, he can come in our hood." -- said no Crip ever. The zone is not a friendly place, and the factions are basically gangs, that will gently caress you up simply because you're not one of them. Loners are excepted because they don't have any organization that they've pledged allegiance to. The minute they do (Defiance, Bandits, whatever), they're a threat.

I've worked in a prison, thanks. I'm familiar with how things work among gang members. It's not analagous to the Zone in this case. There is no prison schedule, there are no guards enforcing rules or a routine. There are various areas that are strongholds of a particular faction. E.g. Swamps for Clear Sky, Yantar for Mercs, etc. That is their home turf. They are not going to be allowing outsiders to freely walk all over their turf unescorted, unmolested, etc. Just....no. As for why they wouldn't let their sole OK bandit friend in....maybe he's turned against them. Maybe they don't trust him anymore. Maybe he's being used as bait or is being used to get intel from the other factions. There's any number of reasons why you would not let someone who openly is identifying themselves as one of your rivals to just wander onto your turf. This is not Romeo and Juliet. The zone is a harsh, merciless place.

We're not talking about Degtyarev though? We're talking about Vidic or whatever the TFW guy's name is. But I guess OK, get mad bro; you're the one who was all like "go watch a documentary". I'm just saying I don't need to. I've seen firsthand how gangs work in the real world. Leif. fucked around with this message at 03:47 on Oct 28, 2014 |

Ah OK, I've been talking about TFW specifically this whole time, which has a very different faction relationship that is much more "all or nothing". I figured since "It'd be cool to use the depot as a bandit," and the discussion about Defiance vs. Loners, it'd be pretty obvious we're talking about TFW. But I guess somewhere along the line it shifted over to something else? I don't know. People getting mad about vidya games. Leif. fucked around with this message at 03:46 on Oct 28, 2014 |

staberind posted:get an i7, ssd, there is a vidyah explaining ok stalker settings, FW is mad lush. personally, I get by on no grass shadowns and a few other tweaks, what I might do later is forced AA through my nvidia software, instead of stalker. It's not that simple. I've got a high end gaming PC with yes, and i7 and ssd; the game does look beautiful and runs at a nice framerate, but is hampered by completely random stuttering just walking through the zone. Disabling sun shadows helped a bit, but not only are there just random stutters, there are also geometry-specific stutters that always occur in the same place. It's just a poo poo optimized game, as evidenced by the retardedly high FPS increase you'll get when the weather switches to fog.

Verifying the local content didn't help, so I guess it's time to reinstall. Uh, pretty much all of them should conflict with all the others? You're pretty much going to be able to run one of the major mods at a time (they're more like TC's than mods).

I get a crash in CoC + AO 3.1 every time someone dies (I think), it fires off something about a script failure in Death Manager line 121. Any clues? I can't start as a Merc -- it happens almost immediately. Gotten it within seconds of starting as a Loner, Ecologist, and Military as well.

I've been away from STALKER for a while and now have a really beast computer and want to come back to it. What's the current best way to play a sandbox/faction warfare mod, with the most guns possible (the AOW3 gun list looks good) -- is there an all-in-one mod pack for that or do I install individual ones? Don't care which game, whichever is running best these days.
