I have Funcrusher as a domain and track titles from that album and other Definitive Jux albums as hostnames. Only one of these is public-facing: infokill.funcrusher.net

I used to have a virtual machine with a Windows XP install that I called "The Gimp". Its only purpose was for those rare occasions when I needed to install software from dodgy sources that I suspected might install crap on my system. So I would bring out The Gimp and test it on him first.

My home is my business so its boring now but, back in the late 90's/early 2000's I had my first workgroup set up within my home and this was the naming structure: Workgroup: WARGAMES Server: WOPR Gaming PC: Joshua HTPC: Prof-Falken I had some other devices/laptops named David/Jennifer(Jenni) over the course of time but, I can't remember what they were. When I got Wifi finally, I think I made the SSID : NORAD Prior to that, I had used the HAL 9000 theme a lot. If anyone remembers that it was pretty common to change the start up and error sounds in 95/98/ME with themes off BBS's or the net, I used to make it sound clips of HAL talking and conveniently, my name is Dave. Nothing like getting a hard fault and hearing "I'm a...fraid" or it playing "Daisy, Daaaaiiisyy.." during shut down. So it was... pretty awesome. Holy gently caress was I nerdy. standardtoaster posted:My network is FBI Surveillance Van. Flowers By Irene crashdome fucked around with this message at 20:37 on Oct 25, 2013 |

I usually just name my systems after the CPU codenames. My current desktop is Bloomfield. Our WiFi SSID is just our last name.

Most of my machines are named complor with a number after. The reason for this is that once upon a time I was working in a gas station and they hired a deaf dude to work there who had cochlear implants or something. Anyway, one day my manager showed me a note he had written that said something along the lines of "couldn't enter end of day sales. Complor broken." My manager couldn't figure out what the gently caress complor means. It dawned on us that he was writing computer phonetically.

NecessaryEvil posted:Wife's laptop: 8440W (HP EliteBook 8440W) Hahaha! I had a phantom "8440P" computer on an active directory domain I started managing that I couldn't tie to anything (all other devices had structured naming conventions and docs). There was a lot of machinery with PCs/embedded devices attached so I never deleted it thinking if I did, I would bring down operations in some department on some old legacy unit. After awhile, I finally setup some monitoring and figured if I got 90 days of inactivity from that device, I would drop it and be safe. This totally lifted a weight off my shoulders and also makes me feel stupid for not googling 8440P.

When my significant other and I got together, she put the kibosh on wifi names like Al Quaeda Outpost and FBI Surveillance Van, so for the last six years (and two states and three routers), our wifi network has been Glocks and Knitting Needles. My work laptop (monster Haswell i7 with 4x SSDs and 32GB of RAM) is Ares. My personal laptop is Athena, my iPhone is Artemis, and my iPad is Ajax.
