sbaldrick posted:I would say the Big Bang Theory given it's year to year rating growth is pretty much the only hit that would have lasted in the 80's/90's. Surely just comparing the numbers gives completely misleading information. Honestly I don't even understand why people still go by these ratings anyway. Someone said earlier in the thread that these ratings companies have all the online viewing info, it just isn't reflected in the 2.5 etc numbers that people talk about. I mean, I watch a lot of television shows. However, I haven't watched an actual show on an aired broadcast for years. Almost everyone I know is the same. The claim essentially says that TV is less popular than it used to be in the 80s and 90s, and I just don't buy that. If the numbers are lower, it's just because less people watch live because of the convenience of watching though a networks website, hulu etc. Just saying "wow, all these shows use to get 8's and so nothing today would have survived then" is silly. The difference between the numbers today and the numbers from yesteryear are surely accounted for through online viewings etc.

Can't say I'm surprised, I think a lot of people were expecting the second coming of Chuck, but the tone makes the show feel completely different (not in a good way though). I was super excited to watch the premiere, but completely indifferent to watching the second episode. I think the biggest mistake (and one that seems like it has probably sunk the show) is that we were introduced to Gabriel long after he'd gotten used to the chip (and long after he'd become professional super-spy), so there's absolutely no sense of wonder (from Gabriel, the rest of the characters, or us as the audience). It doesn't help that the chip is used in incredibly banal ways and Gabriel does not have an interesting enough response to having been fitted with it. It would have been interesting to demonstrate the psychological (both in regards to emotions and ways of thinking) impact of having access to all this computing power. But nope, Gabriel basically acts like token superspy and the chip is no more interesting than having Gabriel wear a pair of Google-glass. I think the showrunners wanted to get off with a bang and show us all the cool things Gabriel can do, but in doing so they've sucked all the fun out of the show. The show should have started when he first got the chip and gradually developed throughout the series. As it is, all his abilities revoke from me is a feeling of "meh". Too late now though, this show is on the train to cancel-town.

SHUPS 4 DETH posted:Jimmy Fallon had an excellent debut, no doubt assisted in a big way by the Olympics, to post the best Tonight Show numbers since the first time Leno quit back in 2009 (though trailing Leno's most recent final show by a few mil). Why would anyone ever premiere a show during the olympics? Especially if it's a show that maintains any kind of continuity? Like, that seems like a pretty great way to ensure that a show is dead on arrival, even if it was the second coming of Breaking Bad.

Occupation posted:It and parks and rec trade the "highest rated Thursday sitcom" spot every week. The renewal of parks means that NBC is still committing to airing Thursday night comedies and yeah, with two main cast members gone negotiations for a 13 episode sixth season are gonna be mega cheap, comparatively. Let's see if Community can pull it off. I read somewhere that Allison Brie is directing some new show, doesn't that indicate bad things for Community?

Has there been any more news on Hannibal? Such a fantastic show that it'd be a huge shame to see it go. The ratings are so poor though ![]()

Josh Lyman posted:Hannibal will, unfortunately, probably be renewed by NBC. I say unfortunately because if NBC would let it go, it could thrive on a proper channel like AMC or Netflix. There's no guarantee that it'd be picked up by another network though? I'll take a renewal over the (huge) risk of it not getting picked up by another network any day. It being more successful on another network might mean that its production values increase, but they've been doing really well with what they have anyway. I can see why you'd wish the show had been on AMC or Netflix to begin with, but wanting a show to be canceled in the hope that it would end up there is crazy (especially since there's no guarantee that a show that started with its third season on another network would actually thrive).

My mistake then. No wonder no one seems to be talking about it getting cancelled in this thread if it'll get new life even if it does.

Can't say I'm terribly surprised considering Don Glover left, Chevy Chase was gone, Jon Oliver was leaving after being reintroduced, new old guy was leaving to be in the Breaking Bad spinoff, Allison Brie has a new show she is directing etc etc.

http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/07/01/hieroglyph-cancelled-before-it-premieres So Hieroglyph has been cancelled because it wasn't "meeting a certain level creatively". Looking forward to seeing it replaced with a super creative police procedural.
