Depending on the computer, putting a VCR in between the analog and the digital sides of the equation can make things easier on you. Some systems pump out not quite standard signals that an old TV or VCR can handle fine by virtue of not knowing any better, but a digital converter or capture device will get mad. Like, I have a much easier time capturing video of my 800xl if I send it to the VCR first.
