You know despite what everyone says, this game is still not easy for a fresh player.

A lot of the gateway quests like Limit Breaks and AF gear are very complicated even with Trusts.

I had to level WHM to even have a chance on some... but people helped me with others.

It is as accessible to a new player as it's ever been, which is damning with faint praise. The game comes from a time before WoW smoothed out a lot of bumps in MMOs as a genre, and thus has a ton of archaic poo poo that never would have flown today. Most notable of which is the assumption that everything should be designed with the "multiplayer" aspect in mind. Both in terms of "this is not feasible to complete without multiple players" aspect, but also in the aspect of making quests complicated and obtuse to facilitate players talking amongst each other to figure them out. A lot of quests are intentionally difficult to figure out so players will be forced to talk with one another to complete them. Over the years SE has taken steps to remove a lot of the forced multiplayer elements of the game, but unfortunately changing the core structure of the quests is too far out of the question, and thus they remain obtuse and complicated.

Yeah I'm not criticizing it. It's just harder than what I expected based on what people on private servers said about 'retail'.

Just the fact you can't blow through limit break quests with trusts is interesting.

The 5 million different currencies are a bit overwhelming though.

Uh... Kupo?

The biggest thing about it being accessible is that a shitload of quests have absolutely zero explanation or direction, and if you ever start something and come back to it a month later there’s basically zero way to know what step you’re on or what you were supposed to do because the only direction was in a vague hint during a cutscene.

Some guy is like “skeletons are weird” and then you’re supposed to collect a dragon’s horn from the desert to deactivate a power plant.

I'm past them now, but LB 1 and 3 were pretty rough. I had to LVL WHM to get Invis/Sneak.

Not sure how you'd get past them without it.

I found it funny that just like on private servers, if you're higher than level 50 and levelling in Davoi, every person on the quest will ask you if you have a Crimson orb.

Subbing DNC for Spectral Jig is never a bad idea, I think you can get invis/sneak from the Survival Guides too? Not always the most ideal depending on where you're going though due to having to cancel invis to interact with anything.

Spectral Jig is a DNC ability that gives you sneak/invis for basically free. The books can too for a pittance, but those aren’t as easily reapplied if your AF poo poo takes forever.

It's either those books or the ones often placed near them in the field or in dungeons. The sneak/invis isn't permanent though, and without a source of it for yourself, you'll eventually run out and then be stranded.

Yeah it’s the ground tome. I still remember doing all of these quests 4 years ago as a total newbie, it was some of the most fun I’ve had playing an MMO. The challenge is gone from so many of them now.

Nice thing about Spectral Jig is that it's a set 3 minutes for both and they are applied at the same time for zero mana/TP.

The spell/potion versions have to be applied separately and wear off at random times making them a pain in the rear end to manage sometimes.

They normalized Sneak/Invis durations at some point so now they don't drop randomly anymore and last quite a long time. Spectral Jig has the shortest duration of any source that I'm aware of but since it's free and instant it's not a big deal.

That's cool that they did that, it was incredibly annoying back in the day to have to constantly worry about one or the other wearing off and finding a safe spot to cancel and recast only to have one wear off 30 seconds later because the day/weather/moon phase was against that spell's element or whatever. Also mobs that aggro to magic, haha, that was a fun discovery!

Wasted? You helped all those other teenagers have a great time, and they probably remember the helpful stranger here and there while they go about their days. Old MMOs have a very humanizing aspect to their bullshit.

I remember the name of the son of a bitch who exploited me for cheap labor in vanilla WoW who offered me 1g for every stack of copper ore I brought him. AH price was 5G a stack and I definitely gave him like 20 stacks. I didn’t know how the AH worked and a gold seemed like an absurdly high amount of money, so.

I also still remember a white mage in FFXI who stayed and healed our Valkurm Dunes party after he outleveled us and healed us all from outside the party for like hours, until we all caught up to him.

FFXI memories are the best because it seemed like the world/game was oppressive and lovely but for the people which made the interactions so much more meaningful. People were incredibly helpful above the call of duty.

Time spent helping people, even in a bad video game, is never time wasted :unsmith:

Truth.

Also I don't think it's a coincidence one game wound up with a lovely community and another wound up with a supportive and friendly one. Yeah WoW being super popular didn't help, but in the early days FFXI was a legitimate competitor to it so it wasn't that big of a difference for a while. But like I mentioned before, FFXI designed almost EVERYTHING to facilitate community. Why are the maps lovely and quests obtuse? So you'll talk to others for information. Why was the combat so slow? So you'd have time to type and talk during fights.

When a game does everything in its power to force people to communicate, I think that they wind up being friendlier to one another in general. In WoW you could solo huge chunks of the game, especially early on, so people never needed to learn to get along with each other, really. I remember a few FFXI players back in the day that were assholes, and it kind of became known across the server who the assholes were and to not invite them to parties.

The game being so brutally punishing maybe helped too, like how soulsborne players often enjoy helping each other. It was super easy to die and lose literal hours of progress, like if your WS just did a bit too much damage and you got one-shotted by Sickle Slash or something, welp there goes the last two hours of grinding. Everyone kind of empathized with how brutal the world was, and I noticed people being more selfless in FFXI than any other mmo I've played.

I still remember a Whm/Thf that hung around mid-level zones just raising people of they died. Her whole thing was "A raise in a flash!" but she got poo poo on by most LSs at the time. Never asked for money, just liked raising people.

Ended up partying with her a few times in the lolDRG day since she got black listed for a while for never changing off /Thf. People in XI were lovely in the old days and stuck in the JP style of game play mindset. I remember trying to convince party members killing a bunch of EP would be faster/safer exp than killing one or two IT in the same amount of time. Promptly got kicked from that party for trying to troll. This was preWotG era.

All the players leveling near that one border in the dunes having to band together to kill the trains camping the zone-in is still a dumb-fond memory. Also the absolutely insane pathing required to get to the leveling sites in the jungle and memorizing it made you feel like a wizard.

Speaking of a brutal world... I was doing CoP quests (PM3-3), and spent 15 minutes climbing all the way up the dumb mountain. Then I realized the key item breaks when you mount up.

So I did it again. Sadly the other person doing it at the same time, did not in fact reveal if he was having fun.

Attowha climb was good and decently unique at the time. Also I'm now remembering the utter craziness of having to grab a good 7-8 people together just to spawn-fight a single crab NM for a rarely used WHM-only battle armour (Reverend Mail). God the game had weird design decisions. Also WHM/NIN with dual hammers doing absolutely ridiculous damage because why not.

Some friends and I made that climb a couple times a week because we used to spam the ENM up there, the antlion one, for some easy exp in an event and the TP Bonus Great Katana dropped semi-regularly for some decent but not incredible exp and cash flow.

Because of that I am confident I could still run up that dumb mountain over a decade later.

This thought also sent me on a trip of even remembering ENM's were a thing. We used to do the Brothers one in Uleguerand Range too for exp when we didn't feel like partying. I don't thing it really dropped anything regularly. Did anyone ever do ENM's?

I used to do both of those, I would trio Brothers on RDM with my two BLM friends, it was fun and you got the pop item for Ouryu, and then we'd do the Attohwa Chasm one for Hagun. Good times.

I think we mainly did the Uleguerand one (Brothers) for gil, as I recall. Back then R3, Hedgehog Bomb, and Anelace weapons sold well. I was also after Cloud Evokers so I could drag my HNMLS to Ouryu so I could then drag them to Bahamut as I really wanted a Bahamuts Mask. Never did get that mask...

So I'm trying this out again because of the Return campaign on atm. I already had it installed but it's an old version, like up to ToAU. I downloaded the new playonline viewer and installed that. It's now trying to download 35k+ files, so I thought I'd try running the FFXI installer that came with the viewer because it may already have those files. But it came up with an error about some cab file and it wouldn't go any further so I cancelled the install. So should I just let it download the files and hope it's done by sometime today, or do I unistall FFXI and try installing it from the new installer and hope that it works and is a faster process overall?
