He wasn't on stage for very long after the screen dropped and Homme showed up? I couldn't tell who left and who remained for the QOTSA song.

Was he? I couldn't tell if he just did an exit stage right or if he stuck around. They cut QOTSA short, but I thought "copy of a ..." seemed pretty normal. I could easily be wrong though.

On that note, does any of the stuff he does give the idea that the band was having fun in the studio or during recording? What would "Nine Inch Nails loving around in the studio" actually sound like?

Yeah, but we'd have bomb rear end signatures with quotes from our favorite songs and spend a fuckton of time discussing who is industrial and who is not.

It really is a paint by numbers mid-90's Cure track, in my opinion holds up better than the 1995 "Dredd Song" from the Stallone/Schneider joint.

That "Dead Souls" cover was a pretty great version, and excellent timing. I remember seeing it performed on that self-destruct tour in '94 as an encore and being super excited (especially since we had gotten "Get Down Make Love" earlier in the evening).

The sequel soundtrack had a serious decrease in quality, with Bush doing a super boring cover of "In A Lonely Place."

You lot see that Pitchfork did a complete 180 from that infamously scathing 2.0 review they did back in 1999. Admittedly, Pitchfork's reviews were far more self-indulgent and elitist in those early years and DiCrescenzo apparently had a deep seated hatred for Nine Inch Nails. I think Pitchfork evolved as an entity since The Fragile release as well. Anyway, review sites are arguably dumb and just out to pimp whatever flavor they deem hot.

Context: Given the new EP several listens, and it does not suck. I think "Burning Bright (Field on Fire)" might be my favorite thing he's done in a bit. Such a wonderful thing, that track. Here's hoping for a proper major tour.

Wow. I hope you enjoyed the somewhat varied and shorted set list. It was a super tight experience seeing him with the weather as an added aesthetic, but I'm disappointed that we got denied "Burning Bright (Field of Fire)" live.

Yeah, the hour I got to see of it ruled. I was pretty bummed that they left the stage and didn't come back though :( At Day for Night last year, Aphex Twin played while it rained and they didn't cut his set short or anything.

After NIN left the stage, the festival staff was being dicks and basically forced me to leave.

The rain thing is weird for sure. I remember it being extremely windy and the rain coming down at an angle, but he was still making robots gently caress on stage. All I can offer is that when they shut NIN down, the rain was pretty much pouring straight down fairly steady. I'm surprised they forced you to leave though? There was a lack of communication from the DFN staff, (which is something they need to improve) but I think they had decided earlier in the day that all outdoor shows were ending at 10. Tyler was still going after they shut the red stage down. We debated staying since there was some good stuff on the Blue and Yellow stages but the crowd to get back inside was insane so we just bailed.

I don't know if there's an explicit connection with Lesley Rankine. She did some stuff with Pigface just like Trent did. The other half of Ruby eventually became Skinny Puppy's new producer when Dave Ogillvie went over to the NIN camp.

Mark Walk did a lot with Ogre's own band as well. Rankine did way more with Pigface than Reznor ever did. He was probably already a quickly rising star when he showed up on Gub (and that tour) and when Broken came out he obviously shot way into the stratosphere above Atkins and his wacky collective.

Yeah, I feel both of those are solid bets. ACL is super tempting, but man festivals are a huge ask for me these days. Day For Night here was doable because the location was prime and the weather was usally solid. Travelling to Austin for ACL and dealing with lodging and access to that venue (Zilker?) is just too much effort. Just gives a traditional arena tour T-Rez so I can pay too much to sit in a seat, drink over priced beer and munch on an edible.

The Downward Spiral is a concept album. Give it more listens and can pick up on the motifs he scatters through out. There's been a lot of effort posts and writing around that thing.

The short hand is that it captures the cycle of an individual as he hurdles toward his inevitable destruction. That's the general loose interpretation in my opinion.

I never really saw "closer" as a "horny goth fucks" track. For me it's all self-loathing and how much he hates himself.

Re: "The Hand that Feeds" Weren't they slated to play an award thing and he skipped out because they were not allowed to hang a picture of W behind them while it played?

As others said, it's all just poo poo going through his head. He wasn't even 30 when he wrote that and it's definitely a product of that angsty early adult hood and the environment and scene where they recorded it. It's gonna get dark.

I want to say there were some interviews around the time of The Fragile where Trent himself referenced that album has his spin on The Wall. In typical pissy boommer fashion, he actually had an encounter with Waters and the takeaway was that of course Roger thought it was hot garbage.
